had a sensation while watching the news yesterday, wondered what would evolve of human communications if it tended to converge into a style of strident blunt efficiency, delivered with apparent casual professionalism

a person could become so accustomed as to not notice it

Wow. What a question!

I’ll give it some thought. But … With or without humour?

I don’t think there’s any chance

I remember posting a question about information density of human speech compared to say compressed digital transmission its probably quite inefficient.

True though note that the information we transmit is not just the literal content of the words. We are also expressing feelings, building comraderie etc, through the tone etc.

not all human communication is done via speech…

not all human communication is done via speech…

Or even by the written representation of human speech.

For pure information communication then without any emotional content.
It was postulated something like that about SETI signals we could pick up signals but they are so compressed it appears as noise and without knowledge and/or technological capacity we can’t de compress them.

The only way SETI is going to pick up something is if some aliens are deliberately targeting Sol to connect. If they are doing that then (again, we have to assume) they’ll make the connection easy to pick up and understand. Low baud. Big energy per bit.

I disagree.

SETI could also pick up signals if there are millions of spacecraft flying around the Milky Way. Then some few should have a communiations lobe pointed (accidentally) at Earth, because communations lobes can’t be made infinitely narrow.

Fair rejoinder.

A person would notice it immediately. I would. It would take a long time, a year perhaps, to become accustomed to it.

I would certainly approve such a change. Provided a “sense of perspective” is present as an adequate source of humour.
