Subject: Speech-To-Song Illusion

I would have put this in the chat thread but it is late and I am supposing that it would get lost and I am supposing there might be some interest.

I was interested because I am always bursting out into song based on what has been said. Sometimes it is the rhythm on the words that connects me to the rhythm of a song. Sometimes it is a similar phrasing/ the rhyme of the words. But that isn’t what is discussed here.

What this is about is that if you repeat words a number of times people start to hear it as music. Three to five times will set up the effect. Tonally. And it doesn’t matter the tone of the speaker. People will hear it the same although people with more musical experience are less likely to hear it as music.

Anyway..Here’s the link…

makes sense; ¿ ever looked at a word you see frequently, and found it looks … wrong ?; or tried to say the colour of a word instead of reading the colour word

Yes.
But it seems to be a random thing? (It is often the simplest of words that do this to me. And it is usually after I haven’t used that word for a time.) (Perhaps this is a different experiment.)

I quite often do that. Usually to the tune of some crappy c&w song.

I don’t think I’ve ever experienced this illusion, but random songs and tunes do pop into my head. This morning’s is: “On Ilkley Moor bar tat”.

Which supposedly has the same tune as this well known Christmas carol:

I’m not sure I see it.

I often make up songs based on a word or phrase I’ve just heard. Mini Me thinks I’m hilarious.

Ditto.

I don’t know why this is supposed to be surprising.
