I know a few one here have poultry and good veggies patches. I was just wounder how i could use my veggie scraps in a better way.

Current way of doing it.
All Scraps from the house and gardens go to the chooks inside and outside there pens. Pens have woodshavings and straw in them so it collects scraps and poo when i clean it out once a month or every 2nd month depends on how wet and pooie it is. the scraps the chooks don’t eat go into a black domed compost bin and then its mixed in with the straw and shavings when they are taken out and put into a pile to break down more, all the Manure from the stables is put into this mix as well?

But i am not getting much compost out of this, any ways I can improve on what I am doing?

Seems a great way your doing it VG. My chooks are at the top of the food chain for scrap feeds, then ducks, rabbits, worms, compost.

the end result is always less than what you put in. You are converting your scraps into chicken manure (and eggs) first which concentrates it more. But what you are getting is a quality product in the end.

If you want something with bulk then perhaps you needs to be looking into composting bulk greenwaste like finely chipped prunings.

I have nothing useful to say about your actual question, but can I just say – good use of fullstops and paragraphs, VG :) Your post was a pleasure to read :)

Ditto VG. Crackin effort. Made my day.
Vegie scraps are bit of a minor concern when it comes to composting in bulk..
It’s best to give them to the chooks as you are doing. They convert to eggs, so it’s a great deal.

If you want bulk compost, you have to have bulk materials.
For one cubic metre of stuff, you may end up with 1/2 a metre of finished product.
So do it in bulk. Have a few on the go if necessary.
I use cow manure from a dairy, grass clippings and leaf mulch and shredded prunings.
That is the bulk volume.
I add to this, my chook waste from under the perches, which is wet hay and poo
and also some pulverised pigeon poo each foot or so to give it some real heat.
I do 2 metres at a time and try and turn it fortnightly.
If i make a new one every month, i have about a metre or so of product each month.
I’m using a 3 bin system.
If you want more stuff, you need to make more.
You have a bobcat right?????
So get crackin with it.

yes, the thread title did remind me of the habit of some folk, when their favourite poultry passes away to the great farmyard in the sky, they bury the bird and plant a tree on top…

OK I turn all my compost by hand, with a fork. It was ok when my garden bed was only yay big.

When I moved here I brought all my compost and chook poo .. left the chooks behind.

I dumped it in the corner where I had planted the lemon tree and that was it.. I could only mulch the lemon tree..
I wore out my ute bringing horse manure from the local show grounds and racetrack or grape marc from the local distillery
I turned around and looked at the size of the yard and called a bloke with a big truck.. said “keep filling it with grape marc until I tell you to stop”.

in the end, I stopped him after fifteen loads each load being approx 16 tonnes..

So yeah.. if you want bulk you have to get it in bulk.

I never order one bale of hay, it is always “yeah bring me a truckload”

grumble, grumble – there wasn’t many of us up-to-date modern writers left on this forum and now you go and start punctuating! good work btw.

regarding the question – you need massive quantities of everything. you do have the machinery – so you could handle it – but where would you get a 100 ton of mulch and 10 ton of manures from?

Yeah we have a bobcat. So I can Handle a big pile of it, just use the bucket to turn it over. I’ll have a look at if I can get some old Hay from the farmers around here to compost up, How would the grass that comes out of the slash be in a compost heap.

I reckon the slasher grass would be OK. You might have seeds in it but if you have a big enough pile the heat should take care of that. If you can chip up the prunings then instead of burning them I would add them to the compost too. Better for the environment as well as making more compost.

grass may be slashed before seeding .. no great problem there.
compost heaps properly constructed should reach temperatures that no seed can survive.
Bark and chips from the woodheap and ashes from the fire.. can all go into your compost mix.

Really yu can assess how much bulk you need by knowing how much pure manure you have.

adding wood shavings to the floor of chook pens and stables will mean that the best/most of a compost mix is already there. You may be limited to how much extra bulk may actually be added

we run no less then 20 goats per paddock at once so they poo in there stable, I rake it out every day once a month i take away the pile and I have about 2 Skidsteer Buckets full (standard Consturction Bucket) and I put a bit more in them your ment to. for horse poo what ever horse is locked up in the Jenny Graig pen’s poo gets picked up and the chooks theres is about 1 wheel barrow (half a skidsteer bucket ) per pen times that by 3 at the momment will be more after Christmas.

Rough when you run horse we dont slash till just before the seed head starts to set seed.

I could try local Daires and Poultry farms for the Manure from them but then it would cost me a little bit for it and Then I would have to find a semi trailler to transport it for me that wouldn’t be a problem I don’t think would just have to offer him some cash for fuel and his time.

that’s a fair bit of manure.
i heard from the bobcat bloke that those precast concrete bins you see at landscapers are available here for about $20 per panel 1× 0.75× 0.6 metre. not bad $60 per bin.

You’ll find you can probably get it for free, if you have a bobcat and a truck. Or at least really cheaply.
Go to a dairy. They often have so much they have a constant job managing it.
A racing stables will usually have a pile. Same with an abattoir. If you offer to come in and clean it up, i reckon they’ll love you. With your machines, you could easily make enough to sell some as compost. Even if it just offsets the cost of diesel.

Hmm. OK. Then you need to use a ute and trailer maybe, but a small tipper would be best. Big enough to take the bobcat to the location. Still worth a look i reckon VG. Get inventive.
