What fert should I use on ivy geraniums in hanging baskets?
Can I use hibiscus fert on Abutilons?
My Magnolia is in full flower. Looks lovely and smells divine but it’s a bit out of wak I think. It’s sister plant hasn’t even got any sign of a bud yet. Anyway I’ll enjoy it while I can.

I don’t know specifically, but I think Ivy Geraniums are grown for the foliage? Then you would want something with nitrogen so I would go for Charlie Carp.

sorry pomolo – now for a more complete answer
my geraniums and abutilons grow in the soil and get a top dressing of manure and mulch each year. the geraniums (or pelargoniums) in terra cotta pots by the pool are repotted each year and severely pruned at the same time.
your magnolia sounds delightful – love aromas in gardens.

Do you have a reason why you don’t fertilise Pepe? I’d be interested to know if your willing to tell.

For their flowers actually BG but I understand if you don’t know anything about them. I thank you all the same.

Heya Pom,
Pelargoniums actually prefer the ‘treat ‘em mean, keep ‘em keen’ approach. Basic Seasol treatment might help but don’t overdo it on the fertilisers as it’s unnecessary and they’d rather a more subtle approach. They thrive here in disgusting infertile Perth sand, and just ask for a bit of water on occasion. If they are not thriving, my recommendation would be make sure they are not getting too much water.
Abutilons you can pretty much use any fertiliser. From memory they prefer a little on the acidic side so would prefer cow poo over chook poo.
:)

Our humidity can be tough of the Pelagonium family.

I wouldn’t fert either but if you had to, I’d throw some slow release in with the geranium pots, and the Hibiscus fert would be okay for the Abutilons.

Thank you HFB. Geraniums aren’t doing too bad but they aren’t thriving either. I know they don’t appreciate our humidity too much but there isn’t much I can do about that. I don’t need to water them because the rain takes care of that.
I just thought Abutilons grow quickly and flower for long periods so they might appreciate some fert. I’ll work it out and they will love me.

I have another G question. A long story so please be patient.
I had a Frangipani growing fairly well. Obviously got hit by the bad frosts they had here last winter. When we returned here all the growth above ground was rotten. I kissed it goodbye and forgot about it. We bought a new frangi to replace the other one and when MrP dug the hole for it he came across the stump of the other one. I planted it with 6 inches of it above ground. I covered the top of it with a jam jar lid because I wanted to keep water out of the hole going straight down the centre of the stump. Anyway it worked and the plant has taken off, new leaves etc.
Now what I want to now is……………what could I use to permanently cover that hole that is open to the elements? The jam lid keeps blowing off and falling off. Could I use blu tak or similar? Spak Filla? I need suggestions on how to keep it dry please.

If the wound is well and truly dry, then go with the spakfiller.

It’s certainly dry so the spak filler sounds good to me. My Frangie lives!!!!
