my wife and i cannot think of politically correct versions of the following two cliched sayings
1. ‘nigger in the woodpile’ it means something suspicious. but is there a less repulsive version?
2. ‘kill two birds with one stone’ this doesn’t go down well with buddhists !

Well kill 2 birds used to be a fact of life: if you didn’t connect either with a stone, you lost the stone and went hungry…
I’ve not heard of nigger in the woodpile…they call us “honkys”, don’t they? Referring to our BO, I think…
You’re not even allowed to say “this place looks like a blackfeller’s camp” anymore…I’ve never seen a BF camp but to my mind it’s said in the same mindless outburst as “this place looks like a brothel”…

“have your cake and eat it too..”

you’re good
‘but snake in the bush’ is known to primary school kids as something lewd – still looking.
‘have your cake…’ is good but not quite
thanks.

What about just “something smells fishy” for suspicious things?

I haven’t heard the first one, but “kill two birds with one stone” relates to achieving two results with one action – so maybe “two for the price of one” would be equivalent?

ok – i’m satisfied but the wife is being difficult.
1. ‘ something smells fishy’ or ‘ i smell a rat’ (my addition) seem ok.
ms pepe likes ‘upset the apple cart’ – which to her, implies some sort of ‘agent of evil’ better.
2. ‘two for the price of one’ pleases everyone i think.

the wife is trying to turn into a male by flicking the remote control between channels.
i said ‘ it takes more than cracking eggs to make a cake’
then this bloke on tv said – ‘you can’t catch the same rabbit in the same trap twice’.
bluddy cliches – we are riddled with them.

Well I disbelieve him. you can catch the same rabbit with the same trap twice.. same as you can catch a crow in the same trap twice. or an raptor.. ditto.

I can see why.. she doesn’t like fishy.. but there are others.. “this looks like a bit of a slippery slope” for example..
two for the price of one is a hit I see.. that’s good because you can’t actually have your cake .. and eat it too.. ;)

she just like the similarity of ‘don’t upset the apple cart’ – which implies whoever is trying to ….is disturbing the status quo. in the old days it was always the blacks who were suspected of this…hard to explain.
the cake and the rabbit trap are similar…. two bites of the same cherry as it were.

Oh, wow. I just started hearing the Bangers & Mash theme song in my head!
They’ll upset the apple cart though accidentally, Mash & Bangers’ clangers come about quite frequently!
hehe, that was a blast from the past :)

certainly is more correct – the sanctified versions often lack the ‘punch’ of the thoroughly bigotted sayings.
