Subject: Timber advice.

I have some pieces of scrap timber that i picked up a couple of weeks ago.

Their nice pieces, and i have them with some other scrappy bits in a wheelie bin with a lid on it.

Bad news – the new bits seem to have borers in them.

Trapped in the bin, they’re no immediate threat.

Questions:

1. Is there any effective/convenient way of knocking off the borers?

or

2. Should i just get rid of the bits ASAP?

Permethrin seems to be the go to treatment.

This is interesting:

‘Borers holes found in living trees, fresh logs, moist timbers (not in a building) can be injected with an insecticide specifically registered for this purpose. Such products are available at the larger stores or garden product shops.’

I see that Bunnings NZ has this:

https://www.bunnings.co.nz/kiwicare-no-borer-injector-spray-200ml_p00446203

Of course, Bunnings Aust. don’t have it. But, they do have this:

Fifteen bucks, but i might give it a go, just because i don’t like the little buggers.

Permethrin seems to be the go to treatment.

Pyrethrum & Permethrin Insecticides

Do NOT Get the 2 products confused as
one is much more toxic than the other.

Permethrin Insecticides require safety gear such as masks & rubber gloves

btw, There’s a good chance that the borers aren’t coming from the bin
but rather that the bin was infested from the “nice pieces of wood”
you’re storing in the the bin.

Case in point, American Forests are being devastated by several
varieties if mainly Asian borers that entered the country via cargo
ships carrying wooden pallets & crates made from hastily (cheaply)
constructed from UN-aged/nor properly dried timber.

The result being, to save the forestry industry, the Government has
resorted to “high spraying” pesticides such as organophosphates
that are devastating to native insect populations & pollinators.

Oh, yeah, that’s definitely the case.

My questions were aimed at determining if there’s any effective/convenient treatment for the bugs, or whether it’s not worth the effort, just bag ‘em up and ditch ‘em.

If i was to sand the timber bits down, and put a few coats of varnish on them, would that suffocate the bugs?

Or would they have time to tunnel out and open new ventilation?

I doubt that these borers are of any threat to anything other than the pieces of timber in the bin. Once the beetles have developed and leave the timber, they will likely leave the area looking for their preferred species of tree to lay their eggs.

If you’re trying to prevent the timber in the bin from becoming more damaged, it’s in a perfect location for fumigating. I’d simply spray the inside of the bin with a standard insect spray and close the lid for a few hours.

Well, at least three times the permethrin dose specified, 10x is not overkill.

Just spraying the inside of the bin isn’t sufficient.
