Subject: Humans put 100 times more carbon into the atmosphere than volcanoes, but that's just the tip of the iceberg

>>Massive volcanism in Siberia kickstarted the end-Permian extinction around 250 million years ago, wiping out more than 90 per cent of marine species and two-thirds of vertebrates.

A huge asteroid pounding into Earth killed off the dinosaurs.

Compared to these events, it might be difficult to imagine how we little humans could affect the planet’s weather systems.

But researchers have calculated that we are now pumping out between 40 and 100 times more CO2 than all the volcanoes on Earth.<<

been preaching that for decades but it is good to have verification.

That inaccurate?!

You mean they still can’t calculate the amount of CO2 produced by volcanoes within a factor of 2.5? That’s obscene.

Wake me up when you know exactly how much anthropogenic CO2 is being absorbed by the Earth’s forests and plankton. 50% of CO2 emissions? 0% of CO2 emissions?

PS. “Tip of the iceberg” is a metaphor invented by E.E. (Doc) Smith in his Lensman series.

I can find no support that Doc Smith coined “Tip of the iceberg” .

The uncertainty on the data and the projected effects is a good reason for much stronger measures to reduce GHG emissions, not a reason to do nothing.

If only it were really a simple world where detailed facts could be just plucked from a low hanging tree, and where complex problems could be solved with simplistic solutions.
