give them time. they want a good 12 months to get established.
BG, I’d like to get clear on this rhubarb thing. I understand what you ae saying and I have also read it in growing advice. We have 4 (new) crowns growing and one from a purchased seedling. The seedling is rampant and leaves are developing all the time while the older ones are going yellow and collapsing to die off. Can I not pick these stalks? (before they die) Does the crown need the nutrients from those stalks to feed back into the plant like some flowering bulbs we grow? The new crowns don’t seem to grow as fast but they too will have older leaves collapsing very soon. Do I leave them on the plants too?
I will abide by your answer. You’re more experienced than I am at these things.
.
hmmm. as my rhubarb has always managed without my help, I can’t claim to be any expert. But I suspect you may be right about the dying stalks feeding back into the crowns. Even if they are not, picking them before they start dying off means there are less leaves to feed the crown, and once they are past their best you don’t want to eat them anyway.
