Subject: Weather link to depression????

Okay I am wondering…. is weather linked to depression……?????

Reason I am asking this is……. this hot weather is depressing.

With no let up in sight for another week, i am so tired of the constant heat and warm nights.

I’m not talking about my kind of depression that needs to take a “Happy pill” each morning…. but can weather of any kind if its over whelming and on going for a long time….cause…..

sadness, anger, procrastination and so on???

Years ago I went to a forum where the speaker said weather doesn’t make our moods.

So if you develop a headache on a windy day…. the wind didn’t cause it… something else did….

Do you understand where I am going with this????

For me today out of interest………. I can feel my interest wanning and the I don’t want to face another day…. creeping in…..Just want to hide from the next 7 days of heat…. only the heat though….

Mr Y told me that one of the reasons he left England and signed up to be a real Australian is because he found the constant grey skies depressing – and yes, that’s called Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) these days and it’s real. He says that he loves where we live because even in the middle of a freezing cold winter, we’ll have an enormous frost but once the sun’s up we’ll have a stunning, clear blue sky for the day – he can put on a jumper and be happy!!

definitely lack of sunlight can cause S.A.D. but I also reckon prolonged periods of anything that is unpleasant or painful can contribute to periods of depression. There are definite links between chronic pain and depression to the extent that antidepressants can be prescribed for pain relief.

In long periods of hot weather all I want to do is sleep, and that is also a symptom of depression.

As for weather causing headaches etc. maybe not the weather itself by side affects of weather e.g. windy weather can make you dehydrated which can give you headaches. And of course exposure to extreme heat can cause heat exhaustion and sunstroke, sometimes fatal.

Absolutely true! Grey skies, rain, freezing cold for weeks on end were a real recipe for depression. People just don’t smile much! I don’t cope with heat as well as I used to, but I still get miserable if I’m cold.

It must be getting you and everyone else down, and no break for a while either. I feel really sorry for all of you. Are you in SA Drylander?

We are opening the house up tomorrow as it’s going to be 34 degrees. Then we’ll close it up after the fresh air has been through the house.

in darwin at around november is the ‘suicide season’. after 9 months of ‘the dry’ , ‘the wet’ is about to come, but first there are huge black clouds and thunder – no rain – people go troppo waiting for a month before the rain finally comes.

I’ve often wondered if S.A.D. is one of the reasons why so many heavy metal bands come from Sweden… :)

I’ve been feeling very sorry for you when I hear the weather report on TV Lucky :( Hope it eases up soon.

It’s also a known fact that in countries like Russia where the winters can be long and hard, that over the winter months people start to stoop lower like they are carrying an enormous weight on their shoulders and their heads and faces are further turned down looking towards the ground. Nobody speaks as they pass in the street. Sounds absolutely misurable to me.

In the south of France, there is a wind that blows off the continent of Africa (just below) and it is a hot dry wind, bit like the one you Sozzies get which blows in from Port Augusta, and years ago, there was a law that stated any murder which occurred at the same time the wind blew, the murder charges would be downgraded to manslaughter. Because that wind was partially responsible…

the sirocco – it blows all the way to Greece.
on the other hand Perth gets its ‘doctor’ which blows in from the sea and relieves stress.

Hot dry winds can send me troppo too. Don’t like them at all. We always end up with a bush fire somewhere.
