I have just read an interesting book called Beekeeping for all, written in 1948 by Abbe Emile Warre and translated from the original French. It is suprisingly comprehensive and very easy to understand.

Im into bees, but as yet have not convinced Miss B that they would be a valuable addition to the family. Our last dog was allergic and she is worried about kids getting stung. Now we have moved I might be able to put some hives out on the property.

Nothing wrong with bees, just make sure the people who help you in there aren’t allergic, the dog will only stick its Nose into the front of the Hive Once, ours hasn’t yet. Got accress to Plenty of Infomation here if you need any. Me and dad are members of The Hunter Valley Ammuter Bee Keepers Assoaction.

Thanks Veg, love collecting information. The dog stood on a bee in the back yard and ended up looking like a Rolly dog, had to make an emergency trip to the vet after hours. Cost a fortune.

Someone to talk bees to. I’ve Been doing some reading up on SHB (Small Hive Beetle) apprently placing the chooks near the bee hives they can help keep SHB numbers down becuase they eat the SHB eggs and the Beetle it’s self.

That reminds me (slightly OT) here…if we get chickens, they’ll eat the dung beetles, won’t they? Drat!

remember Veg, bee poison is accumulative and it remains stored up in your liver. You may not show allergic reactions to 12 stings, but then the 13th might not be so good for you.

When I have been stung on the hands, my fingers swell, then my hand, then the arm starts… anti histamines will stop it. I have been stung in the eye and that fattened up my face. Avoidance is good policy.

And you can detox against bee poison.

Yep we have the Anti Histamines in the Box that we take to the Hives. That’s ture Pm. Trick is to get the stinger out as fast as you can doing it the right way as well.

For information’s sake, how do you detoxify your liver from bee poison?

A herbalist or even a health food store will have kits which apparently if you follow, over the course of a month or so, you can flush the bee toxin out. I know someone who was prescribed such a course from his Naturopath and it seemed to do something my friend says…

What would you have to lose? Good info to have in the beekeeping thread, too…

Err. Not all dogs are the same. My family’s dog was allergic to bees as a puppy, but did the trips to the vet and the injections put her off her favourite game of catch-a-bee? Not on your life.

If you have the sort of dog who is too thick to learn to avoid the bees, I’d say just keep the bees well away from where the dog could get to, maybe restrict the dog to a part of the property with not too many bee-attracting flowers.
