plenty of little chickens around here now, Parents doesn’t know about these 5 little dotties yet, just a matter of a few weeks till dad notice more birds running around or my sister tells them.
Our expectant Mum.

One of the other hens started to sit on some eggs but then just gave up, so we are finishing them off in the incubator. All told 24 eggs in the incubator and probably about 10 under the hen. Fingers crossed that we get a good hatching

Rhodies are great. We’ve kept them most of the time for the last 30 years. They are good dual purpose chooks.

sweet :)
don’t they just look, kinda, drugged up when they are sitting? I have had a broody hen sitting madly for the past week. Looked in the box the other day and there weren’t any eggs! Definitely drugged up! I took pity on her and put 6 eggs in the nest.

That’s what happened with ours bluegreen which is why she got off early and we had to then finish the eggs off in the incubator

That’s a pity. It is so cool when there are little babies around!
Here are my chicks from the incubator:

These days we seem to have more success with the incubator than with the hens, but we haven’t given up on the idea of hatching “au natural”. Just not happening at the moment

so without a mother who looks after them?
when do they get put with the other older ones?
how many cages, chooks do you have?
if you’ve got an incubator does that make you a chook guru? LOL.

Who looks after them? The desklamp! Keeps em warm and we feed them and water them :)
At least 3 of these chicks we are giving to MrS’s sister next Monday (although she has promised to give them back if they turn out to be roosters. lol). Her kids are very excited.
We have 10 adult hens and 1 rooster at present. And one chook house

If you heard the noisy rattler of an incubator you wouldn’t think of me as a guru.. lol/ We picked it up at a garage sale many years ago and the fan is the noisiest thing out. It’s sitting outside on the veranda and I am listening to its dulcet tones (NOT!) right now.
We leave them in the incubator for the first 24 hours. They don’t need any food till after that because they survive on the yolk and albumen remnants they have eaten as they hatch out.
They can’t really fend for themselves, because they can’t regulate their temperature, but after the first 24 hours they can eat and drink normally.
We’ll leave them in the tub with the lamp for about 3 weeks and then we’ll put them in a cage by themselves for a while. They will be introduced to the rest of the flock at about 6 or 8 weeks, although we will have to keep an eye on them to make sure that they don’t get pecked by the older hens. We have found in the past that once introduced to the main flock they will roost in a corner on the floor at night and after a couple of weeks will join the others up on the roosting rail.
ok – thanks anne – it’s always hard to remember who’s got what.
the chooks look similar to mine – probably a bit younger.
open that gate and let them rampage – can’t you see they’re waiting !!LOL.

We do let them out but after years of decimated gardens have found that it’s best to only let them out for an hour or so before nightfall. Not so much damage then; especially when we have young seedlings in the ground.
They are Rhode Island red hens. Unfortunately this lot of chicks won’t be a pure strain. Our Rhode Island Rooster died a few weeks ago after one too many fights with the little bantam rooster who took up residence a year or so ago. We’re not keen on bantams, but everytime we went to catch when we were culling our last lot of roosters, we couldn’t. However just after the old bloke died, MrS did manage to catch the little blighter and he went to bantam heaven. Some friends gave us a New Hampshire X Isa Brown to tide us over and although he’s only a young fella, those chickens are his progeny. Hopefully I’ll be able to get another Rhode Island rooster before the hens get too old because I really like the breed. I also like Gold Laced Wyandotte so I might have to do a deal with veg gardener sometime to get some eggs to set.
Veg do you sell fertile eggs at all? Seeing as I have an incubator I thought I might buy some eggs. I wouldn’t mind getting some Wyandottes again and perhaps some guinea fowl depending on the price.

Yeah, I have Posted Eggs before. Best to wait till it cools down, best Chance might be around the end of July/August for the Most Fertile. Don’t Have much Running around in Breeding Pairs/Trios till then.

you think I can remember 10 dishes off the top of my head? The accompanying theme was Wedgewood. There was a salt and pepper crust grill/roast. A roast stuffed with foie gras. Fowl steamed with vegetables in a pig’s bladder. With rice served in a tea soup. Pekin Duck style. And more I can’t remember. I was pretty tired from my drive to Melbourne and back by this stage.
