The one in the foreground looks like fast clipper, probably wouldn’t carry much in the way of a containers worth.
The one in the background looks more like a cargo carrier.

Bondi Beach
· 1970 · ·

There were originally two Bondi mermaids who sat on the Big Rock at Ben Buckler, North Bondi. The Big Rock is a 235-tonne boulder at Ben Buckler, on the northern headland of Bondi Beach, which was believed to have been thrown up by heavy seas on 15 July 1912.

Because the mermaids used to sit there this rock is also often referred to as Mermaid Rock. Only the remains of one of the mermaids is still in existence. She is on permanent display in a special perspex case on the 1st floor, Waverley Library, 32-48 Denison Street, Bondi Junction.

The mermaid statues were modelled on two local women: Jan Carmody, who was Miss Australia Surf, 1959 and Lynette Whillier, champion swimmer and runner-up in the Miss Australia Surf, 1959.

Sculptor Lyall Randolph created the mermaids from bronze-coloured fibreglass that he filled with cement. He first tried to sell the idea of the mermaids to Waverley Council, but the Council refused to pay for them.

So Lyall erected them on the Big Rock at his own expense. He claimed that because they were placed a certain distance offshore the space they occupied was not under the jurisdiction of Waverley Council, but the Department of Lands. He claimed that the Department had approved his statues. The mermaids were installed on 3 April 1960.

One month after they appeared university students chiselled mermaid Jan from the Big Rock and removed her as part of a Commemoration Day prank! She was later recovered under mysterious circumstances at the Engineering School, Sydney University. Repaired, she was restored to the Big Rock to rejoin her fellow mermaid Lynette. The cost of repair met by public subscription – the public loved the mermaids so much that they paid for Jan to be put back together again. Heavy seas claimed Lynette in 1974; swept off the Big Rock in a storm she disappeared forever. Jan lost an arm and her tail in the same storm. For two years Jan sat alone on her rocky throne until Waverley Council removed what was left of her in 1976, storing her in a Council Depot where she was forgotten for many years.

Re-found in the late 1980s she was moved to Waverley Library, where, in 1999, the Friends of Waverley Library paid for her remains to be preserved by Sydney Artefacts Conservation.

They probably have arranged for someone to have a stern word with him about looking after himself better.

Hello Ros, My apologies for leaving it this long. Nick is still in Launceston hospital and will be for a while. He has had one operation to remove the cyst which had become an abscess and was very infected. He is still on intravenous antibiotics, and may have to have a further operation if there is still some infected areas. He’s keeping his spirits up, although of course the whole experience is very stressful. Once he leaves Launceston, he will go to Campbell Town hospital until the intravenous drip is removed. He’s in ward 5B at LGH if you want to phone him. Kind regards, Halyna

——

I will give him a ring in the morning. If my phone works. My phone/connection is being dodgy still.

Thanks.

That sounds a bit more serious than I was expecting, if they are cutting bits off him. I expect he’ll be allowed home with a PIC line in the next week or two. Those things are a great inconvenience, but far better than being stuck in a hospital bed.

And giving antibiotics out without seeing the what she is treating is bad. There is a gamut of antibiotics and picking the right one is a sensible thing. I know the Car doesn’t present himself to the Medical centre often enough but he did make the effort.

I doubt the state can be blamed in this instance. Bubbles was embarrassed, I assume. The GP went along with it which is her fault. Blame all round.

He’s off the IV ABs but still taking oral ABs.

He’s in a ward with two old ladies and an old man.

They caught it in time, it was heading for life threatening.

The hospital diet is not going well… but he can walk to the cafeteria.

Siblings have been, and brought food. Couldn’t sneak in any wine.

His cut is 8cm x 5cm but open like a pouch. Very gross. He had a reaction to the general anaesthetic but he’s ok.

Goodness me, that is much more serious than just a minor inconvenience.

Thanks for making the call.

Yes thank you. But I mean I’m disappointed about the siblings.. sneaking in wine is about the easiest thing to do into anywhere… I mean, so I’ve heard.

I had an apsis that required surgery and an overnight stay. Lots of blood and a deep hole that required a dressing each day for over 6 weeks, where the hole was filled with a dressing and slowly reduced in size, as the hole gradually filled up with live tissue. Some years later I had another and not wanting to go through all that again, I stuck a scalpel into it to get the gunk out. A few years later I had yet another apsis and was preparing to stick a large needle into it, when it burst of it own accord. They are not nice and I hop I don’t get another.

Heheh, sharing with three others. That and with drs rounds and nurses checks, for an ordinarily solitary man, he would be socialised out by now. And if he answered his induction questions truthfully he will be lined up with a social worker and a drugs and alcohol counsellor and a psychologist to discuss depression and suicide.

I was reading about a man in the USA who said he felt suicidal. They locked him up for three weeks and made his life hellish and then let him go with an 18k bill that took him 2 years to pay off.

Have you seen ‘the Tale of Ruby Rose’? The sound of the devils was one of the things that ‘set her off.’ There is a scene in the movie where her other is confronted by a devil in Ruby’s crib. There is another scene where in response to devils outside Ruby rips all the skins drying on the walls down and uses a winter’s worth of candles.

Thanks for all the concern, thoughts & prayers.

Sterling service from the team at LGH, some very efficient and hard-working doctors, nurses, surgeons, cleaners, the lot.

A nurse will visit me daily to change dressing etc, probably for the next six weeks.

Now going to change my ways and look after myself somewhat betterly after that traumatic experience.

Yes, Beth (the Ross sister) and Pete (her husband) picked me up from hospital. Then we stopped at Target (to get me loads of cheap “briefs” prescribed by the dressing specialist, to help hold my dressing in place. I’ve only worn boxers for years, so got two different sizes of briefs to see which fit).

Then back in the village we visited the IGA and I stocked up on high protein nourishment and salady things etc.

Anyway cheers everyone, I’m back home :)

No worries.

Good.

Any piccies?

:)
