Subject: New PC Build

The puter I am typing on is way past it. It was my son’s gaming machine maybe 12 or more years ago.

I don’t do much gaming. The main workout the new one will get is image processing.

So I am putting together a tentative component list. Any constructive advice welcome…

.

CPU

AMD Ryzen 5 3400G 3.7 GHz 4-Core/8 Threads AM4 Processor with Radeon RX Vega 11 Graphics and Wraith Spire Cooler, YD3400C5FHBOX

.

MOBO

Asrock X570 Phantom Gaming 4

.

RAM

Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 Vengeance LPX 16GB (2×8GB) DDR4 3200Mhz CL16 XMP 2.0 High Performance Desktop Memory Kit, Black

.

HDD

Seagate Firecuda 2TB 3.5” Internal SSHD Hybrid Hard Drive – ST2000DX002

.

PSU

Thermaltake Smart BX1 RGB 750W – 80 Plus Bronze – Non Modular PS-SPR-0750NHSABA-1

.

CASE

Phanteks Enthoo Pro M Tempered Glass Edition – Mid Tower

.

Will use existing optical drive and network card.

That’s the motherboard I have in this new computer, it’s very good indeed. 16 gb of ram is plenty for nearly anything you can throw at it.
I would definitely gone for an M.2 NVME SSD, the one I have wasn’t a lot more than a regular SATA SSD and massively faster as well.
You also don’t need a network card, the motherboard already has a network socket.

Thanks Bill. Yeah, thinking about that one. 2TB ssd seems vary a lot in price.. some around $750

Yep, will have the old (not terribly) HDD.

This is the M.2 SSD I go, #179t

I have another pair of 4 tb HDD’s for storing a bunch of other sutff as well.

And FWIW the Asrock board can take two M.2 SSD’s.

++. Mine’s got 192GB, and sometimes that’s barely enough.

Remember that program I mentioned developing last year (and am still developing)? To achieve real-time simulation of complex circuits, including simulating the thermal properties of the circuit board, I need some serious computer power and lots of RAM.

Oh, yes, I imagine that, and porn, would require quite a bit.

Fuck the thermals, that’s getting into fluid dynamics territory, and no-one’s got time for that :)

Don’t know whether this advice is constructive or not. I got my last one built by MSY. Good price for good quality.

This is the parts list options that they supply: http://cdn.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

And here is where you design what system you want https://www.msy.com.au/systems

Start with a sort on price, pick a price and pick the best system you can get for that price. Then upgrade whatever individual part you want. I recommend not downgrading any recommended part because even if you think you won’t need that performance in future, you will.

On the subject….

I bought a new 5 GHz wireless network card and discovered that it can only work with PCIe x1 slots; I only have PCIe x4 and x16 slots.

Is there any type of adapter available, or am stuck with my old 2.4 GHz until I buy another wireless card??
