I need to point my erection at 55.5 degrees east of north. I don’t have a compass. How can I do it and be accurate? It’s 55.4 kms to the transmitter.
This is the direction I need to point my erection. The erection will also include a new masthead amplifier.

This is the existing erection.

This is the new erection. (yet to be mounted)

Oh……. and some purdie flaaaaars.

You’ve got a sight-line there through those three trees. Wouldn’t that do it?
It’s how i aligned the antenna on this place, and it turned out to be spot-on.

The trial and error method works well. But most handy if you have one to watch the TV and one to adjust the antenna, so you don’t have to climb up and down all the time.

I’m on satellite webernets Mr Panty Parts. It handles live streaming OK, but chews my meagre quota. Original NBN had “price parity” in it, but Mr Abbot (with the support of the Nationals somehow) put a stop to that. Cost me 3 – 4 times as much as terrestrial NBN. 45GB for $49.95 25mb down, 5mb up.

… but you do need an internet connection that can handle live streaming.
It’s $25 monthly but you get two devices on your login. I share with a mate so we only pay $12.50 each. I have dropped everything else, Netflix etc. All the AFL matches, all the cricket, all the Formula 1 races. I don’t need much more.
Yes, I suspected something like that with your internets.
Still, people in the bush are there because they want to be there…. :)

Print out a Degree compass from the net and overlay it with a google earth picture with the north arrow highlighted, use a ruler to extend the line out and will make it more accurate.

Take out the stress from installing your digital TV antenna by using this DVB-T signal strength meter. No more multiple trips up to your roof to get that perfect picture. Connect the pocket sized DVB-T signal strength meter and adjust the angle of your digital TV antenna, the easy to read LED indicator lets you know when you’ve hit the right spot. Adaptors included.

Well, I’ve fucked that up completely now. The new masthead amplifier is NBG. It’s only 15Db whereas the old one is switchable 20Db or 30 Db. Whatever all that means. Get nothing whatsoever with the new masthead amp. Plug the old one back in and upstairs only gets ABC and Prime. Nothing else. not even pixels. The main aerial plug downstairs don’t work at all. I’ll plug the old aerial back on tomorrow, and see if I can get back at least what I had.

Err the difference between 15 dB and 20 dB is rather largeish. Like about 3 times the gain for the 20. The thirty dB is going to be 30 times the gain of the 15 dB amp.

Oh dear.
So what does all this mean, Beeny Boy?
This antenna gives approximately 8-10dB of signal gain, with >0.5dB in gain variation over the operating frequency range. It offers a beam width of 61° for VHF and 32° for UHF, with a min return loss of -10dB for VHF and -8dB for UHF. (BTW, I didn’t buy this one).

if original being replaced is right
masthead amp just compensates for losses in coax going from masthead amp down to tv or distribution system
losses are worst on highest frequency tv channels, and furthest from amp
shit coax has high losses

all it does, the addition of another amp, wideband, adds to noise, it’s unlikely to provide signal to noise improvement over the front end of tv receiver, other than to amplify signal before it’s lost from coax losses

Yes, it will ad to the noise, but if a TV or other receiver is designed for a minimum amount of signal then getting above that threshold is more the point, especially with a digital style system.

generally the only improvement is compensation for line losses, the masthead amplifier isn’t likely to have better performance than the front-end of tv receiver, certainly not when you add both.
just a few metres of crap coax at higher uhf substantially attenuates signal

advantages of masthead amp, with enough gain, is you can go long lengths with shit coax etc, the other advantage might be it raises the signal level above noise that might get into the signal line, local noise from devices or whatever (again more substantial problem with shit coax etc)
as you raise an antenna to get a signal, you lose the signal strength through transmission line losses as line length increases, so you boost up top as near to antenna as possible. The length of coax between them has losses also, so is kept short
with a distribution system, multiple outlets in house or whatever, you need enough gain upfront to accommodate the longest length or whatever
so you know, you can use crap coax, shit plugs/connectors(not constant impedance), the galahs can chew it, some moisture can get in, a few kinks, deformations, loose fittings, some corrosion, split the signal a few times, go quite a distance with some chance of having a usable signal
the higher the frequency the more shit the coax is, largely because of skin effect I guess, other things too

Rule No 1. Make sure ALL your connectors and plugs have continuous connectivity of the cable shielding as well. One dodgy shielding connection, particularly between the power supply and the masthead amp AND then to the aerial will cause you havoc.
All PAL connections being replaced with F1 type connectors.

no power to the (dead) amp and TV signal is fairly much entirely blocked
