Elf says hi PM.

this is a typical summer afternoon clod that wanders past and dumps rain at Paluma or at least north of Rollingstone. Townsville is still very dry even in the wet season. But between April and November we do not see a single clod in the sky.

Don’t start me but the garbage that radiates from the Maccas here in Townsville is disgusting. Obviously the council care only for the Strand and Riverway that the other pretty parts of the city just wait for a real wet day to wash the garbage out to see. And with AIMS just down the road, I find it abhorrent that the council can get away with it…

Yeah it is weird, we can get around 10mm in a shower and the gardens don’t even care, it takes at least 25mm for the grass to think about greening up but if we get 35 – 50mm or over, then things just bolt out of the ground….

Hee hee, I went into work this morning to empty the rain gauge, one of those Nylex gauges with the inner tube and ten the outer sleeve, and if you get more than 26mms it overflows from the inner into the outer….

Well the whole thing was full, you couldn’t get anymore in. That’s 280mm or around 11 inches!!!

If that’s the case I guess you win. How is your new purchase holding up in the downpour? Still on it’s stumps?

we did a driveby and the drainage trenchy roadside gutter thingo is definitely the low point and where the water was. The rest of the block looked alright :)

But how much did Tully get?

Tully got 1 inch to 9am and 1 inch more since. All the rain was funneling past Cairns, Innisfail, Tully and hitting the Townsville Northern Beaches, Bushland beach scored the most with 12 inches.

Hey Collie.. do you use Gmail? I’ve got one of those themes that shows you the weather.. it’s got SNOW!!! I’ve double checked that the location is correct. I can’t express how much I wish it would snow today instead of reaching 39 degrees..

Hmm, I should try that. I’m on a mailing list with lots of (mostly pointless – bloody teenagers) emails. Back in the day when I had no other way to access my email account, I used Pine, and it did rock, because I could go through the emails so damn quick. Now I’m using a free online email service and it takes forever for each email to load, and then there’s all the mousing involved to delete…

More showers during the night. A lovely multi shades of beautiful greys for our sky this morning. We were planning on going to the Maleny daylily farm today, buying a few new ones and lunching in the town. MrP’s BD today so we were goiing to bung it on a bit. Now not so sure. Nice place Maleny but not so good in the wet. I would really like some daylilies though. Will we or won’t we. Will we or won’t we. Should we or shouldn’t we.

Not closed down as such Bubba. It’s now only a mail order nursery. No visitors. I had been there once when it was open to the public and although a mess there was a huge choice of daylilys available. I’ll probably have to consider mail order I suppose. I’m looking for some plants for a bare patch of garden but I want something pretty hardy this time. Getting tired of the constant battle over heat and water for so many of our plants.

I did know it was still mail order. The nursery it’self was shut down after they discovered a disease has come in from OS.

The Day Lily Soc used to have an annual show/sale at Clayfield. If they still do it might be worth the trip, or there’s another Day Lily Farm down here somewhere. Or there used to be anyway.

Leonie was the owner of Cashmere Cottage Garden, my fav open garden, but she’s moved to a new place. She sells her own plants and had a lot of Day Lilies before so I think she still would. I’m not sure what her opening hours are now.

I knew about the Acacia Ridge place but I see they aren’t open now except by appointment. I remember you talking about the lady with the roses at Samsonvale. I’ll have to do some planning as to where I go to get them and when.

No. They don’t allow visitors any more. Only mail order. So we lunched at a pub in town. MrP said thank you for the wishes and to tell you that the low was moving back up north because Towntown is probably drying out and you could do with some rain. He cracked himself up.

We are getting some serious rain today. Had 2 inches over the last couple of days but it’s coming down heaver than that today. Water is gushing into the tank and gushing out the overflow just as fast.

Won’t be doing much outside I guess. It better not wreck my watermelons this time. I bet it finishes the ivy geraniums though. It’s still a blessing for all that.

Have put the slow cooker on and am off to my day at the centre. Better take a book because it will be very quiet down there.

I’ll check back in this evening.

We finally got our storms and rain this afternoon. Managed to get 4inches in 2 hours. Boy O Boy did she rain? Lightning flashing and thunder clap after thunder clap. They were so low (if low is the right word) our house was trembling and shaking. All the gullys leading to the bottom of the property and the dam were like rapids. The dam water rose onto the mowed lawn surrounding it. It was exciting..A skim board would have worked a treat.

Expecting a repeat performance tomorrow.

Just some drizzle happening here now. I’ve done the morning walk around the place and it’s a bit squishy but I still love it. The gully is still a rushing torrent and a whole lot of veg rubbish has washed down from somewhere above so that will have to be cleared away. A bit difficult to walk under the trees too. They are all hanging so low with the weight of the water.

Won’t be doing much outside again I suppose but it’s not because of the heat this time.

Morning TE. Happy Wednesday!

well the rain eased for a moment, but its back again. Was hoping to mow the meadow but that’s unlikely as there are puddles and I still have to finish putting the mulch under the Mangoes. This drop will bring my year to date total to over 800mms or around 32 inches.

17 inches of rain for Feb alone, and now the year to date has risen past 40 inches. There’s a new reservoir in town and it is my backyard (and everyone else’s in Brownsville)

17 inches of rain for Feb alone, and now the year to date has risen past 40 inches. There’s a new reservoir in town and it is my backyard (and everyone else’s in Brownsville)

I know it’s the rainy season, and I know I know it’s been many years, but I don’t remb that much rain in t’ville.

I can feel for you both. We have had our dry spells and it’s a kind of agony. If our wet season this year continues for you southeners, then you may get a good winter wet season as well. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Almost got 2 inches yesterday. The ground is satched and mould is starting to form on the walls and places. It’s one way to find out where something has splashed or split on the inside walls. That’s the first place the mould grows. Makes you wipe the marks then, I can tell you. LOL.

A SEQ weather report. It hasn’t stopped raining for about 36hours. It’s not heavy drenching rain, so that’s a blessing. Strong winds are expected later on but I hope not strong enough to blow over these water logged trees. Teev said this whole monsoon system is actually what would be a cyclone if it was out over the ocean. I’m not even sure we will be able to get to Brisbane tomorrow because lots of roads are flooded.

I want my beach holiday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are right pepe, even up here, there are some soils which this time of year swell up so much with the moisture that they push the air out and become quite dead. Aeration is required and sub-surface drainage is important in some cases.

A friend of ours lives at Pinkenba, near the Bris river, and a while back there was a big tide surge. All the gutters filled up and crabs were climbing out onto the footpaths.

Lots of people were collecting them for the pot.

I was surprised how long it took for the leech bite marks to disappear – couple of months at least before they faded completely.

Sterile leeches bred for the job.

They don’t actually suck away infection, they remove excess blood. Sterile maggots are bred to eat infected flesh.

I have a story about shellfish. I will tell it here or I may never get around to it. MrP and I were having a walk around the grounds yesterday, taking photos of fungi, rushing gullies and wet stuff generally. On the edge of one of the gullies I found a crab/lobbie/yabbie claw lying on the bank. It’s dark blue in colour and about 10cm long. Quite supple and fresh at that time. I assume it came from a small dam that is on the side of the hill above us. Something I never seen around here but what happened to the rest of it. What would eat freshwater crayfish? Do birds eat them?

They are native. There is a natural watercourse downstream from me. As there is in most places, which harbours small fish and critters, When it rains they move upstream, which includes my culvert. Good thing to do is take a brolly and go look at the water during rain. All manner of critter abounds and you get to know your property drainage tracts.

Our dam only has gambousea. I have no idea how to spell that word. I have learnt that if you have them you won’t have anything else because they eat everything.

So I’ve been told. Maybe one day I might investigate it’s extinction somehow.

Can’t be done without killing off everything else that lives in the dam.

morning..it’s so quiet and still out at the moment, overcast and dark. But only a 10% chance of 1mm of rain. Perfect to do some bed clearing up in the garden, pull those toms out and tame the beans ,without the sun on me poor scone.

And did you trick Thee, well your sons trick.. I left a bag of meat on top of the freezer. It was thin sliced scotch fillet for steak sangers and packed in lots of 6, and theres 6 bags, eeek.
So I’m going to use it asap. I’ll marinate it then cut into strips ,thread onto skewers with red green and yellow caps and onions and invite every man and his dog for tea.
