Subject: outside the project, the alien physics of slow, and less

it could be said earth’s climate is sensitive to the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, albedo or whatever, radiation in and radiation out. Humans fart a lot of carbon dioxide, their activities, and there’s methane and others

i’m familiar with the idea of sensitivity, of instrumentation, more generally mechanisms or whatever, and of discernment, subtlety, etc

anyway I have no trouble attributing sensitivity to a climate mechanism, call it a thermostat, and same of attributing sensitivity to ecosystems, weather systems, the sea, and climate, interactions of different aspects

humans are sensitive in all sorts of ways too, apparently, in fact they are genius really, gifted like no other species

studying it all from scales ranging from the universe down to the electron, smaller even, and of time the history of the universe way back and down to fractions of a second that probably have names i’ve never used, and accuracy alien to me, using or referenced to an atomic clock somewhere

the species certainly works some scales

i’m sort of noticing seasons are slow, and expect climate is even slower, for all I know climate (weather systems say, what’s typical of areas over time with variations) is so slow that it may be good as an alien physics. Of course humans think big, they’re expansive with their endeavors, there are lot of them, they want to get a lot done, ambitious, requiring more of them. The project is monumental, global

all that sensitivity, and collective sensitivity, amplified, propelling the human project. Multiplication you know. The group is more than the sum of the individuals, it’s a special formula

anyway i’m pondering, with all this expanding sensitivity, human sensitivity amplified, by increasing numbers, and connectedness, whether there’s anything outside the project neglected

it’s just a hunch, a vague one, that the act of projecting sensitivity on to some aspect of the environment makes a perhaps expedient distraction from some insensitivity of humans

> it could be said earth’s climate is sensitive to the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

Temperature change is much more sensitive to a drop in CO2 than to a rise in CO2, because of the non-linearity of the shape of the radiation absorption bands, and because of negative feedback through changes in cloud cover.

Vegetation growth is sensitive to the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. More CO2 = faster vegetation growth.

> humans are sensitive in all sorts of ways too, apparently, in fact they are genius really, gifted like no other species

With humans, there’s a fine line between genius and stupidity – take me for example. Not sure about other species, may be true of other species as well.

> studying it all from scales ranging from the universe down to the electron, smaller even, and of time the history of the universe way back and down

The fine tuning problem for instance. The thinness and near continuity of the line of stable isotopes. The sensitivity necessary to get neutron stars to exist. The metastability of the universe. The massive difference in quantity between matter and antimatter. The impossibility of backwards time travel in a physics that is time-symmetric. WTF is dark matter. They’re all examples of sensitivity.

> Of course humans think big

They do?

LOL. Yes. That’s what’s called a “political football”, some imaginary crisis to distract the media from real issues. Sydney’s second airport used to be a political football. Ditto uranium mining. Brexit still is.

Which makes me wonder, what are the real issues that are hidden by such distractions.

Well, they would include: incompetence, stupidity, embarrassment, addiction, paranoia, megalomania, quality of life, incompatibility, micromanagement, red tape, waste of funds, sociopath, parking, ease of use, economic slavery, advertising, scams, beauty. And their opposites. Often on a massive scale.

Finger can be removed from the splint for movement exercises, its really stiff an inflexible from being restricted for two months, looks bruised as well
Airing it out at the moment

Sorry about that

lots of people are impressed by civilization, the scale of the project, it’s a wonderful thing, sort of has the benefit of diluted responsibility, you know if culture is for the satisfaction of human nature, humans are a force, culture is a force, being one of seven billion plus specimens, and growing, unstoppable, you can even view pictures from satellites, or the space station, of the entire earth, lots of pretty lights, electric lights, and it’s a wonderful thing man can light up a planet like that
