Subject: What would you do

OK, I am copying this thread idea from other forums I sometimes peruse. I think the idea is that asking “What would you do” sometimes results in a simpler, easier to understand answer than “what is the best possible thing to do in this situation, and why” :D

I got stacks of marigold for Christmas – yay :) 3 plants in 10cm pots, and three sets of 8 little seedlings. I’m planning to plant them in to the vegie bed, as the soil in there is pretty good. One day I would like to have a ring of marigolds or other pretty flowers around the bottom of each vegie bed, but I don’t want to tackle that now as it would mean a massive soil improvement effort and also some new irrigation.

This is our forecast for the next few days:
Today……………Sunny…………………………………………………..Max 34
Monday…………Very hot. Partly cloudy…………………Min 20…..Max 40
Tuesday………..Hot. Chance of a late shower…………Min 23…..Max 36
Wednesday…..Cooler, possible shower………………..Min 16…..Max 23
Thursday………Mostly sunny………………………………Min 13…..Max 26
(and then a few more high-30s days)

I’ve missed my chance to plant in the cool of this morning, but I could plant them out this evening. My question is.. would it be better to wait until Wednesday, when the weather cools down?? I thought they might have a better chance with me mollycoddling them until then, rather than going out in to the garden and immediately dealing with really hot weather.

What would you do??

(I also have a blueberry plant in a 10cm pot to go out into a bigger pot at the same time)

I’d wait until Wednesday and plant them out then….. baby sit the seedlings until then.

i agree, agree, agree.
it’s best to transplant in the afternoon/evening because that gives them a chance to reestablish their roots before coping with the hot sun. so tuesday evening is not out of the question.

Hurrah, thanks everyone :) I usually garden in the evening so Tuesday evening might be best. I’m hoping to swing a day off on Wednesday so I can get a whole bunch done, but I won’t know until Tuesday lunch time or later if that will be possible.

I’d hold off. I have seen first hand the losses of planting annual seedlings out in 40 degree hot sand. It wasn’t my call by the way.

Having said that, pots do not hold a great deal of moisture, especially the seedlings so it may pay to stand the pots in a tray of water until planting out date?

Cheers PM. I was going to put them on a wet towel (which is how my dad has them up until Christmas day) but my spare/old towel is out in the laundry, and I can’t face going out in this heat. Might go out this evening when we get home from visiting MiL, then they’ll be sitting nicely on the towel for the hot days at least.

I hope it’s not too dark for them where they are inside.. but the house will get too hot if I open the blinds.

Yes.
If you plant them out this evening, it’s almost certain death for them tomorrow. Disturbed roots take at least a few days to settle down. I’d keep them somewhere shady for the next couple of days and water daily (or even morning and evening) ‘cos that’s what they’re used to in the nursery, and small pots both heat up and dry out quicker.

That’s the plan then. I have worm juice, bokashi juice, and kelp juice lined up to help them settle in. Oh, and worm castings too, from the last harvest at work.

Wouldn’t things like extreme heat override the influence of the moon, though?

(bearing in mind that I’m not going to be home all day to tend to them once they’re planted – they can have a visit in the evening when I’m home from work and after the dog’s walked, but that’s about it)

Extreme heat is a good time to make best use of what you know.

but yes.. extreme heat is best avoided.. unless you have copious quantities of aqua to splash about

Well I say this .. that whenever there is a “fertile period” on the moon chart, be it for above or below ground plants.. there will be a cooler period moister period and generally better planting time. So I don’t worry too much I just take advantage of what is on offer.

yeah. I have travelled through that area. I was struck at the time by all the names with “up” attached.

Here is a shot of the Eneabba sand plains from circa 1983. I believe all this Banksia hookeriana was cleared for sand mining soon after. WA is such an interesting state.

What blows me away is the size of the place, and the diversity of climate from the Southern Ocean coast via the Goldfields to the Kimberly on the Timor Sea!

And to drive from Esperence to Kununurra takes 3 or 4 days!!

Hey pepe :) Was just about to get to this.. almost at the top of the LHC!

Yep, it was a bloody marathon effort and I was knackered and aching all over.. but I got all the marigolds planted into the vegie bed, and the new blueberry bush in a pot next to the existing one.

Also did an epic prune of the tomato triffids – took off all the dead/diseased growth, and all the dodgy (insect-attacked and I think some had blossom end rot) tomatoes. Haven’t pulled ‘em out yet as there were still quite a few good marties on ‘em. Suffice to say we have learnt a lot of what not to do when growing marties :D

Also pulled out the container of worm castings – when I brought them home from work it was too hot for gardening, so I put the ice cream container on it’s side in the vegie patch in the shade, with the lid open for the worms to crawl out – well between the worms and the slaters, the castings have gone! They left behind beautiful dry, powdery castings, but most of it has been incorporated into the soil. Oh well – not wasted at least!

(by the way, I forgot to say before – if anyone ever has a “what would you do” question, feel free to use this thread!! I left it generic so it could be re-used)

No rain yet, but fingers still crossed.. :(

Thanks :) Actually my plan in doing it, was to show Mr Bon that all the remaining tomatoes were no good, so I could pull the buggers out. Turns out we found a surprising number of OK looking marties. Ahh well – at least we can actually see the celery plants now!

Gotta love the names of some Aussie towns… Some of my faves here in Queensland (that I have been to) are Muttaburra and Kajabbie. The thing I like about Muttaburra is that dinosaur fossils are commonplace, so the road leading in (and I use the term Road loosely) is called the Muttaburrasaurus Hwy.

It all started when someone thought I was a he. Dark Orange, from Scribbly, said I was most definately a she, and commented that Bubba Louie has boobies.
It all got very silly after that.

I know the feeling :) Back in my IRC days I was known as “bruceleewithboobies” for a little while. Not that I can do any fancy Bruce Lee moves, it was just a silly quote from a movie.

One that subject. I’ve just found out that another old female friend is now in a same sex relationship, that makes two. There were the three of us couples who did most things together at the time, so that’s just MrBL and I together still.

Well, having not laid eyes on your person, I read as you present yourself in words….good sense of humour, dry wit, no bs (well, unless intended :D), skilled photographer with an eye for the beauty found in nature, warm and sympathetic yet maintaining a distinct air of maleness, worldly, alert and aware, a storyteller extraordinaire, sometimes cheeky and playful, loyal to your loved ones and interested in people and their diverse culture, not judgmental or bigoted, hard working and focused….in short a lovely guy. :)

What your ‘cover’ looks like is irrelevant but it would be fun to put a face to the personality that comes through in the written word.

I haven’t the foggiest what age you are but am just starting to get hints through the music references so am guessing approximately ten years older than myself…of course I could be way off. :D

It was more the fact that sometimes some people struggle to communicate with the written word and their intensity and aggression in not being able to say what they want to say can cause inflections and tones probably amiss to what they want to say. So, I was flattered and chuffed that your depiction of I was complimentary. Other forums that I frequent less often and in all honesty, I only go there to stir the pot, I may come across as a wum of sorts. I guess that’s what I aim for and achieve???

cheers and beers,

You do stir on occasion, but when there’s a small group of us like this, you get to know each other a lot better and the stirring is taken in context and we know it’s humour. Some things/comments/booboos do ask for a stir. :D

On the subject of the ‘cover’ I’d love to draw sketches of what I think you all look like and then see how it compared to the real thing, would probably be a crack up. Don’t have time right now but maybe sometime…my mental image of you PM now has longer and scruffier hair than before, LMAO!

I used to be identified as a bikie.

Being 185kg, almost 6’ and having a beard that went below my ribs helped I guess.. Long time ago, I’ve since lost a heap of kg and all of the beard.

But I didn’t mind because everyone stayed out of my way.

Truth is I do ride bikes but I wouldn’t hurt anyone who leaves me alone. 8^)

Well, I always hung out with the bikies anyway, though I’m not really a bike rider per se. I’m dangerous enough in a car.

Me too.

I’ve had two bikes and look forward to my 3rd.. Not a Harley though, I ride bikes for acceleration and handling.

I sometimes fantasize myself riding a vintage Vincent or a BSA lightning

chuckles at the Al Queda reference.. I used to be met with “Oh no Jesus just walked in”.. whenever I walked into a pub as a hairy hippie youngster.. Nowadays I just get frisked at airports.. ;)

have fun sketching..

Is that a modified photo of you?

I already have an image of you in my head…a slightly more mature version of the young person in the photos you’ve posted. :)

My ex looked a lot like Jesus. He looked a lot like gorgeous too but that’s just my opinion.

Your nose has changed with age, LOL! It used to be pointier. You look good with a bit more flesh on your bones. :)

Hehe, I think I just set a new record for hogging the LHC with my nightly ramblings, but then as a response to about ten pages it’s hardly surprising.

Not knowing how old you are Horty I’m not much help. Compaired to me PM is a spring chicken, and yes, he is a decent sort of chap. LOL

I suspect from his Pilot comment that I was off with the age and he’s more like my age anyway…even more so now with what you’ve said….

I bet you the PM is just loving that he has you all guessing.
