I don’t know about any sulpher in pickled onions. Maybe they use it in bought ones. Below is an easy recipe that you can use for lots of vegies, even beetroot.
PICKLED ONIONS
1 litre white vinegar
1 cup sugar
1 teas salt
Mix together and bring to the boil. Add spices- peppercorns, cloves, ginger, mixed spice. Boil for an extra 10minutes. Strain and allow to cool. (Do not use iodized salt).
Soak onions in brine for 2 days before pickling.
This pickling liquid can be used for:-
Beetroot
Cabbage
Cucumber
Onions
Peas
Shallots
Walnuts
Zucchini
Someone can correct me if I’m wrong about the sulpher content. You cn use all or none of the spices if you prefer.

We have been lead to believe this is a fact. I know elf’s specialist said no to bought pickled onions. I’ll look at the warning sign on the jars in the stupidmarket today and let you know:)

wouldn’t surprise me. I know it is used in dried apricots to preserve that nice orange colour. If you see brown dried apricots, good chance there is no sulphur in them and that they will taste better too.
maybe I’ll try it for my excess cucumbers. If I do them in sticks rather than slices, it will be like gherkins maybe? #2 daughter loves gherkins.
Yeh, I’m pretty sure the sulphur in bought ones is in there as a preservative – you should be OK with homemade.
I get a mild reaction from sulphur too – only ever happens when I eat a heck of a lot of a particular brand of lollies, or this one ham & pineapple ready made pizza from a market we used to live close to. Weird. It would make the inside of my throat feel all tingly and constricted. Obviously I stopped eating those things once I worked out what was going on :D
