Currently within the Fijian metrological area, TC Uesi is expected to track south and affect Qld and northern NSW beaches later this week.

https://www.met.gov.fj/

According to Brisbane radio, shark drum lines have been removed along Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Rainbow Beach, Moreton Island, and North Stradbroke Island ahead of the expected cyclonic effects. https://www.973fm.com.au/newsroom/more-rain-for-qld-after-weekend-downpour/

Higgins Storm Chasing says “an increasing number” of models show Uesi crossing the coast somewhere between Sunshine Coast and Newcastle, NSW, on Friday or Saturday.

Well, that’s good.

When was the last big cyclone to hit east coast Qld?
Althea in 1971?
Yasi in 2011 didn’t cause as much damage. Debbie in 2017 caused even less damage.

Perhaps Larry in 2006.

But Larry didn’t really destroy all that much. Wikipedia says “A damage survey of buildings in the Innisfail region concluded that the majority of contemporary houses remained structurally intact, though many roller doors were destroyed. The report noted that the structures should have been able to withstand the cyclone, as the winds impacting the buildings were below the threshold required for meeting the region’s building standards.”

Actually, it’s pretty good fun to be on an ocean liner in a hurricane. Fantastic huge waves. The bow of the ship ploughing into the trough, and the engines over-revving when the screws come out of the water. Running downhill that becomes uphill. Great fun.

Cruise ships today of 70,000 tons plus are a rather different proposition from earlier days.

It was certainly an interesting ride around the edge of a cyclone in the old Fairsky, at about 12,500 tons.

Cyclonic seas in warships are yet another matter. A narrow ship of 5,300 tons is quite a ride.

And even without a cyclone, Bass Strait can get to a state where a patrol boat has to shelter in the lee of a leg of a drill rig, wit the engines ticking over to keep you out f certain death shou you fall ff to far to port, starboard, or astern.

One day has it flying off into the blue yonder of the South Pacific off to South America somewhere, the next it’s off on a completely opposite direction “Ooooo… Queensland looks nice”, and today, it’s off for a good sea cruise down the Tasman. “Oh look….. what’s that over there? Meanwhile, the ABC is reporting that Lord Howe Island is likely to be directly hit, or at least severely impacted. Large waves and wind likely along the SEQ and NSW coasts today and tomorrow.

I understand that a TC will lose it’s official classification as a “cyclone” once it drops below a certain latitude, even though it may still have all the characteristics etc. Does the term “East Coast Low” sound familiar to you? Tropical Depression?

This morning on the radio, someone from The Weather Channel said that TC Uesi would lose its cyclone classification but still be as strong as a category 2 cyclone.

I understand that a TC will lose it’s official classification as a “cyclone” once it drops below a certain latitude, even though it may still have all the characteristics etc. Does the term “East Coast Low” sound familiar to you? Tropical Depression?

Would a Tropical Depression lose its classification when it leaves the tropics?

or enters the manics

They’re naming “storms” in Europe now e.g. Storm Ciara, or have they always done that? They call it an Extratropical cyclone

It isn’t so much the latitude but the proximity to the coast. Cyclones either land or piss off back out to sea. If they stay along the cioast they become coastal lows.
