Still Linux woes. It now reboots without losing files. Good.
But I’ve lost all Wifi connection. It was there before. Bad.
Linux is now mint distro.

WiFi is through a D-Link DWA-131 plugged into a USB port. The USB is supposed to light up when plugged in. It doesn’t.
So either a WiFi driver fault or a reading USB fault.

I downloaded a D-Link driver for DWA-131 and followed all the instructions in the Readme file. Got as far as:

installed gparted and it didn’t recognise anything – as a WiFi dongle I didn’t expect it to,

Put a USB mouse in all USB ports and it was recognised in all.

Put a flash drive in USB port and it lit up. But not recognised by gparted – it should have been.

Huh? Started working without warning. I don’t know if it was typing the mount command or just rebooting, or even playing a DVD.

Either way, it gives a signal strength, which allowed me to realise that the internal WiFi is working again (it died when the laptop was dropped and cracked five or so years ago) and gives much better signal strength than the USB WiFi plugin.

So, what’s next. Checking what C can and can’t do with OpenGL, and putting more shortcuts on the desktop I suppose.

Whew!
