Subject: Vape story retracted

After months of pressure from the scientific community, the American Heart Association’s academic journal on Tuesday evening retracted a widely circulated vaping study, which claimed that using e-cigarettes increased the likelihood of having a heart attack.

Last June, the authors, Stanton Glantz and Dharma Bhatta of the University of California San Francisco, stated in the original study that vaping and smoking cigarettes posed a similar risk, while doing both at the same time was an even more dangerous option. Following its publication in the summer, the peer-reviewed research was referenced by major news organizations, including CNN, Yahoo News, and USA Today.

In a statement explaining the retraction, editors at the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA) expressed worry that the study may have been based on misleading data.

“The editors are concerned that the study conclusion is unreliable,” they wrote.

JAHA pulled the paper after Brad Rodu, a tobacco control expert at the University of Louisville, noted that many of the vapers Glantz and Bhatta analyzed for the study were also current or former smokers. Rodu argued that there was a possibility that the use of combustible cigarettes is what made them more likely to suffer heart attacks.

“A retraction is not a trivial matter,” Rodu told VICE on Wednesday. “It’s a significant action. Saying it was a mistake is too weak.”

I’m still vaping until I run out of PG & VG. Haven’t had any nicotine for many months but it’s strange how the habit of vaping itself is still something I feel inclined to keep up.

It’s quite ridiculous and I’ll certainly pack it in when the juices run out.

Habit forming because it becomes a routine habit probably

yeah, add you consider it harmless, and a strong mixture, there’s going to be the increased possibility of heart attack, which nicotine can do in very high doses

but the study may go more to people that have switched are already more likely to have a heart attack

I did not know you could get vaping juice without nicotine.

I’ve been hearing a lot about Juul, who have been accused of marketing vape liquid (with high levels of nicotine) to teenagers.

Some people who were vaping were getting pneumonia type symptoms (which last I read they were not sure why) and wondering if the vapour left water in the lungs

I thought the nicotine based ones were restricted in Australia and possibly illegal and were snuck through customs

In Australia the only e-juice available contains zero nicotine. The nicotine stuff has to be ordered from overseas.

I agree with transition that for inexperienced vapers, it’s very easy to vape far more nicotine than contained in cigarettes.

Nicotine overdoses are probably still quite common amongst those new to vaping. Some people don’t realise how much they’re taking on board until they start feeling ill.

It’s legal to order it from overseas for personal use, as I used to do for years.

Until I decided to quit, which was no big deal with the nicotine. But the vaping continues until I run out of the other gear (e-juice lasts for aaaages).

Oh, ok.

Juul make high nicotine liquids because they wanted smokers to get the same hit of nicotine from a cigarette in every puff of an e-cig. Interestingly, in the UK, Juul made their products with less than half the level of nicotine available in the US. In the UK they are specifically marketed as stop-smoking aids, whereas in the US they’re marketed as a smoking replacement.

There’s a store near here which sell vaping equipment. I’ve never been inside but I’ve looked at their website.

I eagerly await the follow on “cancer due to marijuana smoking” study. The last one must be at least 20 years old by now.
