I love shelties :) My dog trainers have a sheltie and a german shepherd – the sheltie is so beautiful :) She’s a little thing but she is Miss Manners, and she only has to lift her lip slightly to get even the biggest, most rambunctious puppy in line. She’s getting older now and is becoming a grand old dame.

A girl’s got to have a dream… :D

Doing well on the organisation front today – Mr Bon and I brought in the spare furniture (drawers at the top and filing at the bottom) from the car port.. cleaned it up and stuck it in the study. I just need to finish going through the to-be-filed pile – it’s huge because we ran out of room in the existing filing cabinet AGES ago!! Also bought a in-tray each for us, and some archive boxes.. love OfficeWorks :)

and my next projects involve seating. I’ll paint the arbour seat royal blue, and the chairs.. I will select the best 3, ( they’re just dusty but in good nic) cut the back off one and turn it so it fits in the opposite way to the angled seats , and wella.. jack and jill seat with a little table in the middle, and then I’ll mosaic the table bit and paint the chairs to match.

So far I’ve got to them first Orchid, but the earwigs are making holes in the peaches and nectarines..then theres the odd grub on the apple leaves..but so far fruit is fine. Last year birds got the apples the moment they started to colour up , so I have some sheer curtain netting to go over them soon.

Actually I haven’t seen a slater here, and thats despite all the thick layers of manures and mulches.
But earwigs still abound.

Yeh, it is! I get the occasional earwig, but not enough to do any damage.

I think I’ve actually imported a bazillion slaters with the lucerne mulch I buy. Fine for the fruit trees but in the future I will try a different mulch for the vegies. Mind you.. I find slaters living in the bags of manure sometimes too.. hmm.. =/

Done deal dear. I took an orange tile to the paint shop, they matched the colour then mixed that into the paint in their mixerer upperer machine, and I still have the colour card.
The inside shed window shelf also needs a fake sunflower in a little terracotta pot, have friends on the lookout for that :)

pssst just quietyly… if you want an unique tile (you know a one of a kind), you could ask GF if she could paint you one… she can paint enamels onto a pre-made tile and then re-fire it so the enamel bakes onto the surface… it could be a centrepiece for your jack and jill table bit???

Bits of mosaic to do : tall narrow blueboard panel for an artpiece for patio, drangonflies…fernery round table, blue and white daisy design..haven’t thought up a design for jack n jill seat yet. Perhaps a diagonal.

Thats the middle crown and the two aside it were divided from it. Planted in horse manure, fed with worm wee and forghtnightly seasol (that stuff should be re named Plant Steroid) it grows mad and it feeds many. It’s like it’s thumbing it’s nose at me happy to prove I was wrong lol!

Not good Pepe not good.. I trimmed tops and then again when they scorched and they have responded by sending up many more shoots, and multiple shoots from the from cut tips as well. It’s worse than a jungle now! lol. Because of this , and the fact they are prickly, I can’t get to the fruit , let alone find them! ..I need long armed gardening gloves.. and a helmut.. I only have 2 rasp’ canes but it looks as if I have 40! I’m tossing up wheather or not they are worth it.

I am at a loss about my raspberry canes too. They have grown too tall for the “cage” of netting I put over them. I will have to bite the bullet and take the netting off – they’ve grown right through it – and tie them down along the top row of the wire. There’s not much fruit at the moment so I guess it’s a good time.

I wonder when they will stop Orchid! they are also popping up in nearby beds and that ain’t good. There’s cucs and raspberries entwined together and rasp’ coming up in the squash bed.. I only found out when picking button squash and a cane attached itself to my shirt-sleeve, ouch ouch.
They may have to go, sadly.

ok thanks HP and orchid – nice to know i’m not alone.
i will put aside a couple of hours (sometime?) and tie them all up with string and tip prune. mine aren’t prickly but they are growing faster than the bouganvillea – and that’s saying something.

Some scenes from my garden,

The bulb bed where the almond tree will go.
Photobucket

Where it will go exactly..and it’s closer to the maple than I thought and, I would be disturbing the almond when I remove the other, so I potted the almond up and I will wait until winter to plant it out , after I’ve removed the maple.
Photobucket

The columnar apple on the far left had it’s growing tip burnt off in last febs 47c scorcher, and it hasn’t grow back. But it’s healthy and loaded with nice fat apples so I’ll leave it be.

Photobucket

Lastly, the sultana grape decided to grow it’s own way in columns rather than the fan shape I was planning for it..

good call with the almond tree and maple.

with the grape, I think when dormant you would prune those three leaders back. The outer ones to where the growth starts getting vertical and the centre leader to buds near the next line of wire, and train new growth side ways for another row allowing for a new leader to continue to grow upwards in the centre. Then do the same each year until you have many rows coming out from the centre leader. Eventually you will have lots of horizontal branches that become the permanent framework for new growth each year. Not that I know anything about growing grapes, my vine runs rampant over the top of the trees that grows nearby. It was here when we got the place and they are not table grapes so I haven’t bothered trying to tame it. Good for juice though.

Another still pic, me blindfolded and kneeling, hands out in a ‘give me more’ position. Completely naked stripper in front of me.
And I still don’t know what happened next! lol! The girls will tell me. one day.
The girl put the pics on her facebook and I nearly choked. I rang her and asked her to take them off right now!!

lovely looking veges and fruit there HP. are they your first beans this year?

i spose GA can only film the good crops but i find it disappointing that crop failures are hidden away – it gives the wrong impression – that gardening is easy and always successful.

Yes true, I’m a beginner with veges and there must be duds there somewhere! Yep there is. And I know I’ve just fluked it with some others.
First beans yes, , well I’ve been picking them a couple weeks now. I have decided to grow the dwarf ones only from now on. the climbing ones are too high.

I’m sure I’ve seen at least one segment were they pointed out a disease or two, when visiting gardens, and told the owner what to do about it.

The green on the far right are granny smiths, the big red and green ones are from one of the columnar apples ‘Charlotte’ , they are beautiful and sweet. I’m scoffing one of these a day.
The lighter green ones are from the ‘Bolero’ columnar, or as Stehen called them ‘pencil apples’ , but these ones are quite sour. I will use them in cooking.

Thanks HP. Grannies are a useful apple for cooking. I hope to get an apple tree soon. Charlotte sounds nice!

I’m going to try another dwarf bean this time, ‘brown beauty’ , see how that one goes. I love the experimenting and the science of gardening with veges and finding out what grows best in the area :)

I’ve pulled out my Madagascar Beans because one season gave me more than I’ll use for a while. I was planning to plant some Blue Lake climbers but the rain set in, so they’ll have to wait.

Aw Thee :) thanks. I loved those bridesmaids dresses too, so soft and pretty. It’s a classic style that suits every figure.
Immediately behind the bride , in the rotunda pic, are her 2 sisters, and behind the groom, his 2 brothers.
The bridesmaid in the pic on her own, is eldest daughter, who’s lost 10 dress sizes since lap banded and is a stunner :D
She has more to lose yet..

Pumpkins leaves are going mouldy but still have oodles of fruit growing well.
Do I milk spray it,
Do nothing,
Or try and pick off the worst affected leaves ?

tomatoes had it..but the sweet basil is fine, I’m drying as much of it as I can for the year.

Climbing beans are now pulling branches of neighbours olive tree over.
I have frozen and vacc sealed about 5 kilos, in lots, and I reckon there’s that much on the vine again. I can’t reach the top, and I’m not getting the ladder out..
Will it die over winter?

No this is the last one.. A. Cognata ‘Moptop” has grown way past what it said it would on the tag. Half a mt high by 1 mt wide..it’s easily triple that. I asked Mr Ryan why and he said theres some in the genus that just do that.
Ok, well I started off not liking it, but now I love it. It looks like a miniture weeping willow and looks great over the pond.

No worries.. the heats sent me inside for now anyway. I did freeze and vacc seal pumpkin cubes, then used straight from frozen in my fav pumpkin risotto and it worked, (sauteed on high heat first to brown) so I’m rapt and want to keep as many as I can grow.

Thee I only ever bought one tiny pot of it, it grows mad, obviously when in the right conditions. Dormant in winter but stays green. It overhangs the little border and I chop it off straight and pot up the bits. Great for pots in the shade with taller plants in, hangs down over the sides. Easily controlled though.

No worries.. the heats sent me inside for now anyway. I did freeze and vacc seal pumpkin cubes, then used straight from frozen in my fav pumpkin risotto and it worked, (sauteed on high heat first to brown) so I’m rapt and want to keep as many as I can grow.

Would not bother COz TOO LATE IN THE SEASON AND THEY ALL END UP LIKE THAT after awhile , same as zuc plants , sowwy caps LOL

Cool pics HP, personally, I wouldn’t expend too much effort in saving the pumikin, I’d be letting it go and harvesting the fruit once the vine has perished….

Arh ok, so even when all leaf is crunchyand brown , the fruit will still be attached and maturing?

Nah, I reckon that be perished enough for me… When it looks like the vine can offer no more, I’d be digging it all out….

did the same last night with my apple cucs

Climbing beans are now pulling branches of neighbours olive tree over.
I have frozen and vacc sealed about 5 kilos, in lots, and I reckon there’s that much on the vine again. I can’t reach the top, and I’m not getting the ladder out..
Will it die over winter?

I am so jealous as I didn’t get to grow beans this year. They will probably die back over winter. Beans left to dry can be used as pulses I suppose, or planted again next Spring.

Photobucket

That is beautiful. I wonder if it grows it up here. I want one!!!!

correction, triple the width, and it’s nearly 2 mt tall.

That’s a good tip. We’ve got feral pumpkin vines taking over the area just outside the fence. They have HUGE pumpkins on them and I was wondering how to store them for later use. You have given me a good clue.

Pomolo some pumpkins are too watery to use this way, the real giants are mostly water, thats why I grew the butternuts. But you can have a go and see..

Pumpkins leaves are going mouldy but still have oodles of fruit growing well.
Do I milk spray it,
Do nothing,
Or try and pick off the worst affected leaves ?

Yes I will do that. However I hesitate to ask anything of him at the mo, he’s working arvo shift on one job then straight to nightshift on the other ,for the last 3 days. Mad I reckon, but he says it’s a holiday!
He has the rest of today and tomorrow off, but I’ll try get a friends hubby to come over and raid the beans.

I will have beans for a year, and I’ve given away bags of them too.
The pumpkin vine also snuck in under the beans and theres beans, olives and pumpkins all tangled in together lol.

you’ve done well to build up the soil fertility – the sort of power growth you’re getting only comes from extremely rich and well balanced soil.

Thanks Pepe. It was the horse manure that did it. I piled bags of it on the bed , dug it in, let lucern grow from it then dug that all in again. Whilst I can get heaps of that manure free, I will keep doing it to all the veg beds.

Nowhere near the quality of PM’s grasshopper pic, but heres a pic of another spider thats here in abundance at the moment.

Aw thank you PM and GF :) I can’t grow a rhody from a cutting, but who cares, I can grow saffron ! lol.

I got the bulbs at my local ‘Plants Plus’ nursery. I don’t know enough about them to tell you much, but they grow well in Tassie, (and Vic!) so I’m guessing they need a temperate /cold climate. (I live on the temperate west side of Melb, the east side is temperate/cold)

Although ,my place last winter was mild with no frosts, and over summer I put the pots with the bulbs left in behind a shed to stay dry. I took them out about a month ago when I noticed shoots growing, placed them in full sun and watered them with weak seasol.

Well you don’t know unless you have a go, is all I can say :)

Those are the first real live saffron threads I have ever seen. They are pretty bright orange in colour. No wonder they colour up food well. Congrats HP.

Saffron!
These bulbs didn’t flower last year, but they did this year.
Nine little stamens from 3 flowers, it’s but a mere half pinch, but will do for saffron rice for 2. When they dry I will keep them in a small glass jar. You have no idea of the size of the grin on my face :D

GF is well impressed and wants to know where you got the bulbs and will they grow in the tropics??? GF is excited for you HP.

Probably already answered but the answer is “no.” They don’t like our tropics.

believe me, I can :D

I tried growing some with no success. Only got leaves, and after a while not even that!

Strange BG, because by all rights, saffron should grow better on your side of town better than mine!

Wow that’s amazing HP! I see now the difference between ordinary crocuses and Saffron ones. The bit you harvest is not the stamens with pollen on, but another part!

Orchid, I read that the part with pollen isn’t to touch the red stamens at any time or they will ruin them with pollen, so I plucked them out very carefully.

Thanks BG :) I’m more convinced then ever that whilst zygo’s will survive in sunlight, they do best in shade.
These one’s get dappled light in the morning for an hour or so, facing east, then it’s full shade for the rest of the day.

There’s no artificial lights out in my fernery, they love the dark and need it to flower.

Organisation is the key Bon. I’m too busy to remember everything else let alone time to feed the citrus what it wants!!
I can’t say I followed the fact sheet 100%, but as you say, close enough to when it was due within a day or two.
A reminder note definately helped.

And there’s an added problem I’ve noticed with dwarf citrus, if indeed it is a ‘problem’ and that is, the mini trees seem to be forever in flower. Mine all have flowers, and new growth ,at the same time as immature and mature fruit. Limes, lemons, navel and valencia oranges’, and dwarf mandarine.

My standard size citrus have clearer indicators, eg the lisbon lemon has lot’s of large green fruit but no flowers atm, same with the imperial mandarine.

It’s an education!

Yes it is. I’d say the dwarf stock fruit trees are in a category all to themselves. But I just keep treating them as per the standard citrus and all is fine so far.

I don’t prune the lotsa lemons, just where the branhces may overhang the path and fruit whacks me in the head as I walk past. The taller people here don’t have that problem! lol.

Just remembered after seeing your Acacia limelight in the background of that pic HP. I asked at my nursery if they could get me one of them. They said they could get them no trouble but ones they have ordered for customers previously, all died. They concluded that it is our humidity that kills them up here. I was very disappointed. aw no :(
Strange though , because they are after all only wattle trees. Surely there’s wattles about where you are. It gets humid here too, in fact this summer was more humid then ever.
But I wonder, when the soils up that way were dry for a while that killed them because, unlike the bigger tree these dwarfs need regular waterering..

I wish it was that easy. I don’t think we could compare our humidity to yours. There is humidity and there is humidity I imagine. I have had a few stays in Adelaide and their humidity is miniscule.

There are also Acacias that only grow down your way and won’t perform up here. Some wattles only like the dry arid conditions. I’m sure one day someone will hybridise one that will be for the North.

I do love yours though.

I have an old pinafore that I used for the pattern. I made some up years ago, but sort of forgot I’d lost weight and they needn’t be so wide! lol.
I’m using up whatever material scrap I can get my hands on, old curtains, tablecloths, ect. The bias binding I bought though.

No I don’t lol, but it’s because I have three daughters and several sisters who all want some aprons, friends too but they buy them. Material only though.

The ‘paintball’ apron is a hoot, it’s a heavy drill fabric with a slight spandex stretch, comfy and for heavy duty cleaning. I bought the material cheap as no one wants to wear those colours. I have 3 more cut out to make up.
Some of the others are a light fabric and good for stuffing the pockets with clean cloths and implements as you clean windows/brush dog/ light cooking.

Well done! I rather like the tablecloth one:)

Thanks , I do too Dinetta, it’s great. I sewed up some tea towels out of the scraps, linen tea towels are the best. I have another apron cut out ready to sew up too.
I’ll keep both of the linen ones for myself.

I tend to live in them. My girls wonder why I don’t have coffee spills or food stains on my shirts and tops , so now they want some.
Fling the apron off and I’m clean enough to go out if I need to.

It’s a good idea. I should do that too, it’s very annoying to get a grease spot on something that you’re wearing that is good.

Coode Island, fuel storage, the one that blew it’s lid on the 29 th of nov 1991. I remember the date because giant son was born that night just after midnight.
Driving to the hosp was terrible through the thick black smoke. There wasn’t another way.

The most interesting one. Some 35 years ago the Maribynong River flooded. The water went up to the red part on this pole. The pole was down the embankment a bit, but if I stood next to it, the top of the red mark is way over my head.

Actually very deep, and it was recently dredged. It looks shallow but apparently a feature of this river is the depth is deceiving.
The history of the river was very interesting.

I’ve done a quick check: this is the second major watercourse for Melbourne, and flows past Flemington race course…(Melbourne Cup Racecourse)…it’s saltwater as it flows toward Phillip Island…was very degraded during the latter part of the 19C because of all the factories along it, but now it’s been cleared up and cared for…

Wonder why that optical illusion happens? Must be somethig in the water’s composition…

Strike me pink!

Zygos. Both of the smaller plants are offspring of the large top one.

Interesting thing about that middle zygo pot …I thought that the previously heat affected red ‘leaves’ would green up , or at least new growth would be green when I repotted it and moved it to here in the full shade. No go, and no flowers. But, to fill gaps in the pot I added a couple pieces of the green stuff, and they are flowering. It’s been 18 months or so since I repotted these and moved them into the fernery.
So, in order to bloom well they need shade from the start.
I will remove the red growth plant and replace with the green bits later on, after the parent plant finishes flowering.

I had a zygo that never flowered for more than 10 years…it was a beauty…simply a matter of watching the night-time light in the end…sadly it died of dehydration after the cows knocked the pot over and I didn’t notice…

Yes the hose bits are earwig traps. There’s many of them in there and when the chooks are out I’ll pick up a hose bit and tap it on the path , the chooks come running to gobble them up.
In fact the chooks are getting so used to this that they try to kick the hose bits about hoping for an earwig snack.

My redish leafed zygo was probably too heat affected to flower. I have seen these ones flower so I assumed it would. I want these ‘column pots’ zygos to grow to the same size and flower all at the same time, so I will repot that one. That will set it back a few years though, so if I find an advanced pot of the same flower and colour, I will get a couple.

Yes they love a worm wee ‘tipple’. They need to dry between waterings, but an unwatered one is a sad sight.

I know exactly what you mean…just because you’ve got a nice empty (in your case, b_i_g) rainwater tank doesn’t mean the heavens will automatically come and fill it for you…very good timing indeed…

Now this lady is one of those negative sorts who had a ‘go’ at me about everything. But in a friendly sort of manner. Check out her body language! She is a poultry ‘grower’? and grilled me about the chooks. She told me they would be much better off with 2 water troughs, one for drinking and one for bathing. I said I didn’t know they liked to bathe in water… she waggled her finger at me and said “you mark my words dear, they love to bathe in water!”. Ok!

how do the chooks know which one is for drinking and which one is for bathing? My ducks use their water for both, but I haven’t seen a chook in there bathing! Maybe the ducks make it too dirty for their nice white feathers?

Oh I did ask her that, sorry I didn’t add… She said they won’t drink the bathing water an keep it just for bathing. I have never seen a chicken bathing in water.
I will test it, but when it’s not raining.

They don’t normally bathe in water…just dust…sometimes on those gaspingly hot days, yes they’ll either stand in the water or splash…but that’s very rare…it’s not the general rule…my aunt used to hoe a row in the chook house where she was, and fill it with water, and the chooks would stand in it but not bathe…

No it’s not. There is one little ‘secret’ to growing beautiful boronia’s.. don’t let them dry out. That’s it.

And If I can grow it, then anyone can! I don’t feed it anything.

If it dries out the flowers drop, the leaf yellows and that’s it, it’s compost.

Honestly, I had so many people tell me how they tried and tried to grow a boronia and killed one after another, so why was this one so beautiful.
I replied I water it daily and I don’t let it dry out. Doesn’t mean flood it either..

One thing I’m learning about is just how much water a plant needs. It’s raining atm and yest was a great drop, nearly an inch! so I won’t water. But if it was any less than yest’s amount I would have still watered things, esp’ the boronia.

I tend to think of natives as dry tolerant plants, but obviously not all are. maybe that is why so many have problems, they expect they will survive dry periods.

No, the bottle brushes are a point…I didn’t know until Bubba Louie told me, they soak up water if you’ve got a bit of a bog area…so I’m not growing any after they’ve died…however the bottlebrushes in the lawn area are like Christmas trees at the moment, I think they get flooded by the rain water overflow…best show in 16 years…

Then there’s the melaleuca in the US…it’s a noxious weed in some of their waterways…

I just got word too that he ‘got told’ today, and that they would expect more manners, help and decorum from a person who helps to manage parks, and often works within communities. Perhaps now his mother will keep her mouth closed too.

No PM, it’s just a naughty but playful goldfish that has learned to spit gobfuls of water in your face! lol! The closer your face, the more force it gathers.. People walking past a pond see fish and just have to poke it. It might be a learned response to this annoyance.
It’s about 8 years old now and it never used to do this. A couple others are starting to copy it.

Well the location where they are found is fed by a spring, and it is way out west in Qld, so yeah they’re a tropical freshwater fish. Apparently these ones will shoot water at you if you stick your nose too close. Now on my list of things to see in Qld.

Just received a better photo sent to me of ‘me and my friends’ hehe, at the orchard launch day :)

We’re standing in the old vege garden part of the Werribee Mansion which we have turned into a fruit graft nursery. I was busily removing growth from below the grafts and Jane called out ‘come on, you too!’ so I slotted myself in between the lady and the parks fella whom I wanted to swat with my handbag.

Incidently that young fella rang me today and we had a good chat, and he apologised.

Incidently that young fella rang me today and we had a good chat, and he apologised.

:D

Photobucket

That’s nice. Goodness knows what stories his mother had told him.

Oh there wont be any apology from that quarters. It was more important to me to hear from her son as it was his actions that directly affected me.
But all’s well that ends well, he learnt a valuable lesson and that was not to let himself be influenced by others, even his mother. And that makes me glad.
The mother is moving house this weekend, some place well west of Ballarat. Good.

Pansy fail! I don’t know why some died and some are ok but still leggy. I will tip them out tomorrow and replace with impatiens.

Thee’s Rhody bud today and yest’. No idea what colour the flower will be when fully open, but atm the edges of the buds are a dusty pink. It’s changing.

Where leeks were yest’ today there’s silverbeet. I took the pic before I planted out the s’beet. Spinach, and a stange bulb that I think looks a bit like a gladoli. I don’t have any gladdys.

Almond tree is growing well whilst winter bulbs start laying down.

The area for mini orchard #2 with the fruit tree zig zag line. Apples will be at the front points and citrus at the back. A close up of the apple graft. Beetroot behind the graft too close, but by the time the roots of the apple start to spread, we will be munching on roast beets.

I haven’t tried growing them from seeds. They are cheap enough in multi punnets anyway.

Yes it’s too wet. It’s raining again so I’ve shoved it under the patio for now. That’s one that was gifted to me and I’ve no idea what colour flower it is. The previous owner said it never flowered.

That angelica pachycarpa has me scratching my head. I did want the culinary ‘angelica archangelica’ and thought that was what I’d ordered, but the two I got at the nursery came with the ‘pachycarpa’ name tags, ornamental, not the culinary.. bugga.

BUT..
A.pachycarpa has very shiny deep green leaves and a slightly shorter plant than it’s culinary cousin.

A.archangelica has matt leaves and they’re slightly lighter in colour.

The ones I have are not shiney leafed at all and look like they’re going to be tall. I’ve compared so many images all I can see is green, but I’m positive I have the latter.
