NAC can relieve symptoms of respiratory conditions by acting as an antioxidant and expectorant, loosening mucus in your air passageways. As an antioxidant, NAC helps replenish glutathione levels in your lungs and reduces inflammation in your bronchial tubes and lung tissue.

I’ve never found expectorants to be the slightest use.

Or antioxidants.

4. Helps Relieve Symptoms of Respiratory Conditions

People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) experience long-term oxidative damage and inflammation of lung tissue, which causes airways to constrict — leading to shortness of breath and coughing.

NAC supplements have been used to improve COPD symptoms, exacerbations and lung decline (17Trusted Source, 18Trusted Source, 19).

In a one-year study, 600 mg of NAC twice a day significantly improved lung function and symptoms in those with stable COPD (20Trusted Source).

Those with chronic bronchitis can also benefit from NAC.

Bronchitis occurs when the mucous membranes in your lungs’ bronchial passageways become inflamed, swell and shut off airways to your lungs (21Trusted Source, 22Trusted Source).

By thinning mucus in your bronchial tubes and boosting glutathione levels, NAC may help decrease the severity and frequency of wheezing, coughing and respiratory attacks (23).

In addition to relieving COPD and bronchitis, NAC may improve other lung and respiratory tract conditions like cystic fibrosis, asthma and pulmonary fibrosis, as well as symptoms of nasal and sinus congestion due to allergies or infections (24Trusted Source).

SUMMARY
NAC’s antioxidant and expectorant capacity can improve lung function by decreasing inflammation as well as breaking up mucus.

By an amazing coincidence, there’s a chain of franchises currently going down the toilet in Australia that makes the exact same claims about NaCl.

NAC does have a place in therapy, but mainly in patients with CF, TB or COPD, not for cold and flu symptom whingers.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-8167849/Doctor-claims-combination-drugs-prevent-coronavirus-patients-needing-ventilators.html

Dr Steven Quay is seeking FDA approval to treat coronavirus patients with nebulized heparin and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in a clinical trial
The first drug, nebulized heparin, an inhaled blood thinner, coats the protein found on the surface of the virus
Meanwhile, the second drug, NAC, breaks the protein down to prevent it from entering the lungs
Clinical trials have shown that heparin alone, or used in combination with NAC, have improved lung function in patients with pulmonary damage
Dr Quay hopes the combination will either prevent patients from having to go on ventilators or can wean them off of the machines
In the US, there are more than 142,000 confirmed cases of the virus and more than 2,500 deaths

so at most 1/5 of what they get from ‘flu’ what’s the big deal

The antioxidant N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) had been shown to inhibit replication of seasonal human influenza A viruses.
