There’s probably hundreds of thousands of modems on 24 hours a day when they could be in sleep mode when not in use

Saving heaps of energy across the grid and in peoples bank accounts

Agree. Landline phone is on modem but even there it could be put to sleep when I am.

Being on 24/7, apart from being a big waste of money, also makes them easier to put malware on.

All you need to do is turn the bloody thing off you know?

Why should it work out how to put itself to sleep? When you wake up, you want it to be instanty awake.

Many modems have an automatic low-power (sleep) mode. This can be configured in the modems settings as required.
