i can’t find the old thread and it was probably worn out.

i have moved my chooks to be with the chicks and into a henhouse with three nests and fresh deep litter. Why then do my layers form their own nests in the deep litter – facing straight into the doorway? if i put a nest in the position they chose no hen would use the nest.

We are minding the neighbour’s property and three frogmouth owls are resident in an old vine.
One of my chicks (the rooster) escaped from my daughter who was looking at the owls. So how do you capture an escapee with a whole overgrown backyard to rummage in?

A chook chasing dog ?

My furball Max would flush it out no worries!

About the chook nesting where it wants to.. I guess keep removing the nests until they get the idea, or pick up the nest holus bolus with both hands under , it has their ‘smell’ on it , and put it where you want them to nest.

That’s right. When I was having problems finding one batch of chicks come lock up time, I eventually found them roosting on top of my pot plant shelves. When young they can fly pretty high too due to a higher power to weight ratio than adult birds.

thanks VG.
didn’t work tho’- he’s nesting in the shade because of the sheer heat of the day.
however he is getting very thirsty and lonely. @ lunchtime his little head was peeking in the front door.

That was so sad.

I loved his doco about his travels collecting rare breeds and now they’re gone. :(
