I thought people might like to add some of their music choices while in lockdown to help with our collective sanity.

I am listening to a mash up currently.

I’ve been listening to:

Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros
Mumford & Sons
The Killers
Time Minchin
Passenger
The Lumineers
The Dead South

That’s about three day’s worth,
Usually full album or full live show.

OMG! I was listening to that in the car a couple of days ago. Think I might have turned it right up – And possibly also peed a little bit.

Have you played the girl child Kasey’s ‘Little Bird’ yet?

He is happy as he has been running around the back yard and pulling soil out of one of my pots (sensory play) tossing an ornamental budha statue head from the garden across the lawn and then delving into an ornamental pot that has ornamental pots where the budha head cam from. He has no care for customs evidently.

All sorts really, one thing I miss about cancelling Foxtel. A lot of channels with documentaries and you could almost always find one to watch. Flick from one about the universe to one about ancient Rome or anything in between…

Netflix is better than Stan for documentaries, if you want to pay.
See if your library is subscribed to Kanopy. All you need is a library card to watch content for free. You’re only allowed to watch 10 per month though.
Beama film is another free service, I’m pretty sure you also need a library card for that. Tons of docos on there. No limit.

If it wasn’t for composer and theatre impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber, the world of musicals would’ve looked mighty different over the past half-century. His songs and compositions echo through everything from the Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar to Evita and Cats. (Yes, he’s one of the folks who helped the word “jellicle” become lodged in everyone’s brains for nearly four decades now.)

In short, Lloyd Webber boasts quite the resume — and, while his musicals aren’t treading any boards in the present circumstances, they are coming to a brand new YouTube channel called The Shows Must Go On. Starting from April 4, it’ll release a different high-profile production each week, with the chosen show playing for 48 hours from 5am AEST each Saturday. And, unlike tickets to Broadway or the West End, these streams are free.

It all starts with the 2000 adaptation of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat starring Donny Osmond, Maria Friedman, Richard Attenborough and Joan Collins. The following week, over the weekend of Easter, the 2012 version of Jesus Christ Superstar will be available to watch — complete with Aussie comedian Tim Minchin as Judas and Spice Girl Mel C as Mary Magdalene

The following week, over the weekend of Easter, the 2012 version of Jesus Christ Superstar will be available to watch — complete with Aussie comedian Tim Minchin as Judas and Spice Girl Mel C as Mary Magdalene

I’ve listened to this a few times now. It isn’t perfect. But it is nice music for a hay barn in the rain during a pandemic.

Watching the YouTube free version of Pink Floyd – The Last Concert (Gilmour, Waters, Mason, Wright) it occurs to me that this sudden shut-down of the live entertainment industry (and let’s be clear – this is catastrophic for them) would not have hit quite so hard if the industry were just a little more ready to adopt digital distribution, and the market were just a couple of years from where we are now.

Let’s hope Covid-24 doesn’t wipe them out quite so badly.

For those of us that are old enough to remember this Aussie drama Prisoner and the theme song.

I think the character Bea Smith (was it?) Val Lehman (sp) lived or does live on Russell Island Qld or has done some time in the past.

Pertinent to these times.

On The Inside lyrics

Play “On The Inside”
on Amazon Music Unlimited (ad)

He used to give me roses,
I wish he could again;
But that was on the outside,
And things were different then.

We’d built our world together,
With a love so clear and strong;
But that was on the outside.
Where did i go wrong?

On the inside the sun still shines,
And the rain falls down;
But the sun and rain are prisoners too,
When morning comes around.

Last night i dreamed we were together,
Sharing all the love we’ve known;
Til i had to face the nightmare,
Of waking up alone.

On the inside the sun still shines,
And the rain falls down;
But the sun and rain are prisoners too,
When morning comes around.

On the inside the roses grow;
They don’t mind the stoney ground;
But the roses here are prisoners too,
When morning comes around.

He used to give me roses,
I wish he could again;
But that was on the outside,
And things were different then.

It’s a nice clip, and I think they’ve done a good job of making an orchestration that includes traditional musical elements while still appealing to Western Rock sensibilities.

One of my brothers had the soundtrack on an audio track. I did not realise how many Aussie musos were in that production at the age I was back then. I do now though.

I can’t remember the ending. We saw the notorious Melbourne show from a few years ago. I hadn’t seen it when I was younger. I thought it was stretched out far too much and could have been about half to two thirds the length.

Well the re-presentation of the show as more modern day works well. The architecture of the set and the image projection worked really well. Tim Minchin as Judas was really good. It was even a bit too easy for him.They dabbled a bit with the score. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn’t.

As Time Goes By

Frank Sinatra

You must remember this
A kiss is still a kiss
A sigh is just a sigh
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by
And when two lovers woo
They still say, I love you
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by
Moonlight and love songs never out of date
Hearts full of passion, jealousy and hate
Woman needs man and man must have his mate
That no one can deny
It’s still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by
It’s still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by

I like most of U2’s music prior the Joshua Tree album (which I have on vinyl) . It took a little while for me to warm to the Joshua Tree album as it was a change in their style that I wasn’t sure about that initially. I suppose bands need to grow their craft and branch out to something new otherwise their music can begin to be the same with a slightly different beat.

Yes I was impressed with the gitaring.

I tended to dismiss early 60’s groups as being too pop and too Beatleish, in my younger days.

Rodrigo was quite blind from infancy. He wrote his works in Braille, later to be transcribed by others. Remarkable thing, considering he composed one of the most sublime pieces of guitar music ever, was that he could not play guitar at all.

He had a good long life, from the start of the 20th century til its end. His first piece of published music was Dos esbozos for violin and piano (1923): his last, Rincones de España (1990). That’s a remarkably long span.

I could imagine that.

When playing the harmonium you can pull out a stop but you will only play in the range of the instrument governed by that stop.

I presume he played some other instrument…

Dad,

“Chants From Another Place” by Jonathan Hultén

https://soundcloud.com/kscopemusic/jonathan-hulten-the-mountain-from-chants-from-another-place

This is a debut album from a Swedish musician I’ve quite enjoyed over the past few years.

Inspired by the late 60s and early 70s folk music. He also really loves choral church harmonies. All mixed with a solid dash of Scandinavian dark melancholy. Yet not a “retro” album at all.

I’ve seen him live once. He only had a 4 song EP at that time. Was a short but memorable gig. Entire album is worth a listen.

Love, Alex

Baby, please don’t go to town

Turned into Hey Joe

Which as we all know, was tweaked slightly by Jimi Hendrix.

Think “Hey Joe” and you automatically think Jimi Hendrix. But over the last half-century, thousands of musicians have performed the song that launched Jimi to stardom, many of them before he did. Why?

First, there’s the chord pattern (C-G-D-A-E), a circle of reversed fifths, which produces an effect musicologists describe like this: “The notes will feel as though they fall into one another.” Emotionally, that creates a sense of inevitability dovetailing perfectly with the laconic, foreboding lyrics. Secondly, the lyrics tell a timeless story that runs like a blood-red thread through hundreds of American folk songs: somehow, for some reason (usually, though not always, infidelity), one lover (usually, though not always, male) kills the other. And that isn’t just an abstract musical or historical trope; it’s an irreducible part of American life. Most murder victims are slain by people closest to them. That’s why cops still automatically jump lovers and partners to the top of their lists of suspects.

The timelessness and inevitability of “Hey Joe” surely helped folks believe its self-described discoverer Tim Rose when he said it was an old folk-blues song he learned as a kid. It sure feels like one. But after decades of archival research that led nowhere, it turns out that’s really unlikely. Besides, Rose isn’t exactly a reliable witness: he took co-songwriting credit for “Morning Dew
“, Bonnie Dobson’s widely covered song made famous by the Grateful Dead

, when he rearranged and recorded it. And at least three other people have claimed they wrote “Hey Joe.”

So… who actually wrote it? As Shakespeare says, thereby hangs a tale.

Somewhere in the late 1950s, Niela Horn—a folk-revival musician whose “Mean World Blues” was recorded by Dave Van Ronk in 1966

—penned “Baby Please Don’t Go To Town”. At the time, singer-songwriter Billy Roberts, who would later copyright “Hey Joe,” was her boyfriend. Horn’s song used the reverse circle of fifths progression, though it also had a bridge. “Even the question-answer format was mine,” Horn (now Niela Miller) told a researcher, perhaps overlooking the inconvenient fact that it’s also the format for lots of traditional tunes. “He took the melody and put different words to it.” Ironically, that’s almost a one-sentence history of how folk and blues music have always generated new material from old. The key difference is that Horn copyrighted her song. Still, unlike Willie Dixon with Led Zeppelin or the Chiffons with George Harrison, she never sued her ex. Among other reasons, she says her publisher advised against it because it would have been “a long and expensive process.”

Here it is. What do you think?

Now, there’s also a Scots musician who says he helped Roberts write “Hey Joe” in Europe in the 1950s. But what we know for sure is this: like Rose, Roberts played “Hey Joe” around Greenwich Village, where lots of people first heard it from one or the other of them, or both. Roberts always said he wrote it; he copyrighted it in 1962.

Game over, right? Ha!

Another Village folkie, Chet Powers, became Dino Valenti when he moved to California in the early 1960s and joined the folk-rock scene mushrooming around L.A., then later Quicksilver Messenger Service up north. He brought “Hey Joe” with him, claiming it was his; he copyrighted it too. Or maybe his pal Roberts gave him a piece of the copyright to help him after he got out of jail for a drug bust. Depends on who you talk to. Anyway, Valenti turned a lot of West Coast bands on to “Hey Joe.” So you’ll sometimes find him as the credited songwriter on albums, as well as in his 1994 New York Times obituary. What you won’t find is a recording of him doing it.

It’s enough to make you feel like Alice in Wonderland.

The controversy lingers, although most folks, including the paymasters who cut songwriter royalty checks, now agree Roberts is the most likely author. But here’s a final twist. Roberts’ son Andrew, born in 1961 while Billy was divorcing his mother, vehemently denies that his dad copped the tune from his ex-girlfriend; it was, he declares, a takeoff on Frankie and Johnny dedicated to his mom.

Unless you’re plotting a reality TV show, it’s probably best not to dwell too deeply on the possible implications of all that.

Christiana Wallman passed away in June in Pinehurst, North Carolina, at the age of 63. Those who know about the album she recorded under the name Tia Blake have long puzzled over her backstory, which in some ways, is just as hazy and enigmatic as the music she made. Here are some stray details: she was born in Georgia to a father who may have been a CIA agent and a mother, Joan Blake, who would go on to establish the Canadiana landmark that was Double Hook Bookstore in Montreal. She herself spent most of her life as a writer (article in Granta, play at the New York Fringe Festival), but very briefly, she refashioned herself a folk chanteuse in Paris. It was there, circa 1970, that she fell in with a group of musicians and cut an LP of folk standards for a small and unglamorous-sounding French label, Société Française de Production Phonographiques. Such was the scale of the production, in fact, that a number of copies were misattributed to ‘Tia Blake and His Folk-Group’ despite Blake’s beautiful visage appearing on the album cover. There followed a lone gig at the famed Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier, then a relocation to Montreal, then a few tracks (never used) laid down in a CBC studio—and that was all, the end of Tia Blake as a recording artist.

Thanks for that. I’ll have a good listen later.

If she was 63 this year, she would have been 13 in 1970. I suspect it must have been mid to late 70’s.

If I’d bothered to read the words under the photo, I’d have noticed it said 1971 as the album date.

I’ll see what TATE has to say about her.

From TATE:

Tia Blake was the stage name of Christiana Elizabeth Wallman (1952-2015), an American writer and singer.

Life
Wallman was born in Columbus, Georgia, in 1952, and grew up in North Carolina. In 1970 she worked for Farrar, Straus and Giroux in New York for six months, before moving to Paris. In Paris she recorded an album of folk songs at Ossian Studio in 1971. This was released in February 1972 by Société Française de Productions Phonographiques (SFPP) under the title Folk Songs and Ballads: Tia Blake and Her Folk-group.

So 18 when she made that recording.

Impressive production of Ludus Danielis (Play of Daniel) by The Dufay Collective.

A 13th-century drama with monophonic music, written about 1227 to 1234 by students at the school of Beauvais Cathedral, located in northern France. A large portion of the text is poetic rather than strictly liturgical in origin; it closely follows the narrative of the biblical story of Daniel at the court of Belshazzar.

I think I was about age 8 when I first found out who my father was. He’d been away in hospitals or I was farmed out to other relatives and friends.
Dad was at home and a man knocked on the door. Said he had a piano. Dad said, we never ordered a piano but mum stepped in and said, I had a bit of extra money and I asked him to bring it around. Dad said second hand paions were a waste of money. She said at least go and have a look. I still have this vision of my father sitting on a car trailer in the street, knocking out tunes like he’d performed in bars all over.

He got down and said, “bring it in”.
That’s when we all started learning about music.

A tidbit from my son who lives in Norway.

They are presenting my favourite festival as a cutdown online event this year.

https://www.roadburnredux.com

All the shows will be appearing over the weekend abs only up until Monday.

Kairon Irse and Tau are two early sets that I think you would like.

You should check them out if you have time and bandwidth to spare.
