Hi everyone,

Has anyone tasted these and also grown them?

Tried them for the first time the other night and was really impressed

For my money the Black Russian performs poorly in my climate so I’m a bit put off on black tomatoes in a hot climate.

I had to Google it just to work out what you’re talking about!

Never heard of them.. intriguing. Wonder if they are nutritionally very different from a tomato?

Hmm.. higher fructose content than tomatoes.. I won’t rush out and stock up then :D (I’m sensitive to fructose, although I think it is wearing off fingers crossed)

they are just another hybrid tomato with a fancy name. Superior in flavour to regular shop tomatoes but not, IMHO, superior to home grown heirloom varieties. If you can’t grow your own and want more flavour, and can afford the price, they are a nice tomato. As far as I know they are not available to you and me, but just commercial growers. At least that was the case last year.

too much fructose in our diet is one of western culture’s major health issues…

Scientists have proved for the first time that fructose, a cheap form of sugar used in thousands of food products and soft drinks, can damage human metabolism and is fueling the obesity crisis.

Yeh, I think I remember reading that article. Was surprised to find no mention of what my gastroenterologist said about it – e.g. too much fructose = the runs. But maybe that’s just for those of us who are especially sensitive.

I’m glad that it’s being looked at as something that’s bad for everyone (in large amounts) though – might make the labelling clearer or low fructose things easier to find.

Well my mum used to always limit how much fruit we had at a sitting (apart from the cost factor with 5 kids!) because she always said that we would get the runs if we had too much…and she certainly wasn’t a scientist!

I have Black Russian in this year and I’m not all that fussed with them. I much prefer Black Krim
