Wonder if people will ever congregate like that again.
People of the future might look back on those times and be astounded.
“They used to gather in great crowds without even thinking about it. And they’d enter shops without having to use sanitiser and they completely ignored correct distances.”
“Apparently they used to touch their faces, and they would even touch other people, too – without gloves.”

This was written by Kathleen O’Mara, in 1869 after the Irish famine, reprinted during 1919 Spanish Flu Pandemic.
And people stayed at home
And read books
And listened
And they rested
And did exercises
And made art and played
And learned new ways of being
And stopped and listened
More deeply
Someone meditated, someone prayed
Someone met their shadow
And people began to think differently
And people healed.
And in the absence of people who
Lived in ignorant ways
Dangerous, meaningless and heartless,
The earth also began to heal
And when the danger ended and
People found themselves
They grieved for the dead
And made new choices
And dreamed of new visions
And created new ways of living
And completely healed the earth
Just as they were healed.

The US Constitution says that it has to happen.
Even if, for some reason, it doesn’t happen, Trump will have to leave office no later than Jan 21. No if, no buts, he’s not pres any more.
The leadership then devolves to the Speaker of the House, IIRC, until such time as a President can be elected.

No. The president does not have that power. Legal scholars are widely in agreement on this point, as are both Republican and Democratic election officials. The nonpartisan Congressional Research Service reached the same conclusion when it investigated the question in the aftermath of 9/11.

Wiki has this: The song is about two boys (“Me and Julio”) who have broken a law, although the exact law that has been broken is not stated in the song. When “the mama pajama” finds out what they have done, she goes to the police station to report the crime. The individuals are later arrested, but released when a “radical priest” intervenes.
The meaning and references in the song have long provoked debate. In a July 20, 1972 interview for Rolling Stone, Jon Landau asked Simon: “What is it that the mama saw? The whole world wants to know.” Simon replied “I have no idea what it is… Something sexual is what I imagine, but when I say ‘something’, I never bothered to figure out what it was. Didn’t make any difference to me.”
More recently, in October 2010, Simon described the song as “a bit of inscrutable doggerel”, while the “radical priest” has been interpreted as a reference to Daniel Berrigan, who was featured on the cover of Time on January 25, 1971, near when the song was written.

In the song’s final verse, the political gives way to the personal. Mitchell recounts the departure of her “old man” in the eponymous “big yellow taxi”, which may refer to the old Metro Toronto Police patrol cars, which until 1986 were painted yellow. In many covers the departed one may be interpreted as variously a boyfriend, a husband or a father. The literal interpretation is that he is walking out on the singer by taking a taxi; otherwise it is assumed he is being taken away by the authorities.

It’s strange the American nurses, somehow I think the qualifications may be low? I know from personal experience nurses are an international lot, it for some reason never met any American nurses (they have a few physios though). Our hospitals are mad for UK and Irish, Phillipines Christians and coming though now probably due to training here, Cambodia and Chinese.

No idea then. I know the Phillipines and Irish have long had a production line feed into Australia. Irish as a bit of an extended holiday thing and the Phillipines specifically to meet Australian needs as a big source of foreign income.

Probably more about the willingness. The salary for a nurse will be much higher in Australia than in the Philippines, but Aust/US appears to be comparable.
In March 2019, The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that between May 2017 and May 2018, registered nurses brought in a median salary of $71,730 per year – a 3.7% increase compared to the previous year.
Registered Nurses (RN) in Australia earn an average salary of $65,000 per year. Nurse wages vary based on location, qualifications, experience and seniority.
So it appears that compared to Australia the nurses in the USA are quite well off.

Why are they comparing median salary for American nurses with mean salary for Australians?
They’re not. I pulled the figures from two different sources and did not note the difference. My bad.
The Australia figure could be median as well, couldn’t it?

In March 2019, The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that between May 2017 and May 2018, registered nurses brought in a median salary of $71,730 per year – a 3.7% increase compared to the previous year.Registered Nurses (RN) in Australia earn an average salary of $65,000 per year. Nurse wages vary based on location, qualifications, experience and seniority.
So it appears that compared to Australia the nurses in the USA are quite well off.

I know an in quiring mind is a good thing. However, I doubt that one could push enough air into someones lungs that contains oxygen by blowing in their mouth. This disease starves the blood of oxygen. CO2 ain’t going to cut the mustard.

What good would that do as the lungs have stopped working, mouth to mouth resuscitation would only have a very short-term benefit if at all, unless a respirator was immediately available.

More automotive antics in Queensland
Queensland Police have handed out more than $24 000 in coronavirus infringement notices overnight after stopping several vehicles allegedly doing burnouts at an industrial area south of Brisbane.
Officers were called to Josephine Street in Loganholme shortly before 11:00pm after reports of vehicles gathering in a vacant car park.
Police stopped 10 vehicles that had allegedly been performing burnouts and issued 18 notices for failing to comply with a COVID-19 direction.
It comes after 58 infringement notices were handed down at a similar gathering at nearby Rochedale on the weekend.
Each infringement is worth $1,334.

Like i said the other day, it sounds like Huguenot thing all over again, and that got quite messy last time around.
I don’t think they’re allowed to murder the neighbours and set their houses on fire any more. They passed a law.
Are we allowed to murder Cardinals who have sinned?

Yeah, ‘summer ready’.
After what we’ve had so far this year

During my walk this evening, I came across a young woman telling an older lady that coronavirus is so bad in Europe because of the weather over there.

I assume that it was only the social distancing rules that prevented you from giving the young lady a swift kick up the arse?

I am not yet an internet infections expert but weather and season influences influenza,

It could be. Coronavirus likes cold weather, and it’s deadliest in Europe where it is cold.
I’ve now found a practical use for a coronavirus mask. Saving me lots of money.
I’m using it to stop cement dust while bricklaying.

It doesn’t help a bit if it’s cold and wet, as it lowers resistance.
But, the measures employed now would be effective against all colds and flus.
It just that, with this one being more lethal than usual, they’re being emphasised quite strongly.

Thing is we don’t know yet – in part because it hasn’t been through even one summer. There’s a very slight hint that hotter and more humid weather may inhibit it a bit, but the data is quite patchy.
The other thing about that (ill-informed) comment is that the person being told that may then assume that if they get it, it’ll only be mild, and so not concern themselves so much about social distancing and thorough hygiene.
That is dangerous.

Not totally without validity. The cooler conditions will permit the virus to live longer outside the body, so more chances to spread, plus the usual winter illnesses will weaken the immune system and make the viral infection more severe.

When you consider permafrost viruses reactivate , not saying this virus is from the permafrost but the freeze could put the virus into a zombie cocoon like state.

Well, it is Easter.
FTR I took the comment to be misleading. A combination of flu season + COVID = bad, but also some European countries failed to make proper restrictions early enough.

That’s how they keep viruses for further study.

The reason might be sociological, rather than biological: People spend more time inside together in cold weather.

I discovered I have bone spurs on one side of my thoraxic vertebrae just the other day, by reading a CT scan report from six months ago. My GP hasn’t mentioned it. I suspect the decades of coughs-colds-and-sore-holes GP grind means doesn’t bother to bring his head to work too often.
From my readings since, it would appear that if they don’t pinch any nerves or significantly change the shape of the spine, they’re going to reduce the range of movement in the joints, but are also having a protective effect, preventing the compression & degeneration of the inter-vertebral disks.
So there’s that….
