Some people are. I went to Spudshed yestingday and many of the staff were wearing gloves, both those stocking the shelves and those working the tills.

Papers about effectiveness of basic masks #masks4all
Curated by Jeremy Howard and the fast.ai community. Summaries by Reshama Shaikh. The papers below have been used to create a video, and a newspaper article, summarizing the utility of basic masks. In summary: everyone should wear masks, which they should make themselves using t-shirts and/or paper towels, whenever they go out in public. I’ve also made a little summary on Twitter of the video, and a summary of the article.

look, we’ve been supporting more masking for“ever” so we are as biased as we are as teachers and online educators in promoting school closure

but the reasoning seems good, including

  • healthcare workers wear masks so you’d hope there’s evidence behind this
  • masks prevent transmission even before symptoms, when people may still be contagious
  • data as screenshot above
  • what’s more, the population density in those places is HIGH
  • cynically thinking, the advice may be also to preserve mask supplies for healthcare settings
  • they also remind you to not touch your face

that said, “community (local unknown source) transmission” in AUS has been low to date, so they might not contribute “much” but maybe you should wait for someone less biased than us

“We also now have evidence that an infected person can show no symptoms and yet still pass on the virus to others,” he said, adding that the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States are reviewing the usage of face masks.

I’ve seen people wearing disposable gloves while shopping. It’s a bit pointless really. You just get the gloves contaminated instead of your fingers. It’s not like they are changing their gloves after each shop.

I use the sanitiser provided when I go into a store and use whipes on my hands when I get back in my car.

You still have to maintain the same self-discipline about not touching your hand to your face until after you get home and washed your hands.

I looked up antiseptic gloves. They seem to be anti bacterial, not anti virus. And they are pretty specific surgical gloves. What I’ve seen people wearing are, as far as I can tell, just the usual disposables you can buy in the supey.

I already am. Not for me, I know I’m in the clear, but to reassure cashiers and other shoppers.

Not those awful medical masks, though. A mask has to be a fashion statement. I have three home-made ones.

I have a half giant-bandana mask made from a large right angle triangle, I sent you a photo of that already. I also have a very cleverly designed mask that provides a shortening across the philtrum to stop excessive pressure on western-style noses.

I find the material jersey interlock to be perfect. It’s stretch, so fits fairly tightly over both mouth and nose. It’s a very fine knit single layer so is breathable, it stops particulates while allowing air through.

The three mask designs. From top to bottom skimpy, bandana, and clever.

This is my skimpy mask.

Being Jersey interlock it doesn’t need edging of any kind, so just cut it out and put it on.
