A face mask is a fashion statement.
Has anyone started selling emoticon stickers for face masks yet? A smiley face.

Simple test for masks

Nice one. I wonder what was in the spray can.
Anything not harmful would do.
Spray deodorant? Spray disinfectant?
A little spritz like that, let it dry/evaporate, mask is still good.
Even if you ditch the tested mask, at least you know that the rest of that type/batch should be good. And that the other types aren’t any use.
I used fly spray.
Jersey interlock fabric passes this test very easily. No aerosols get through. I lit the spray with a bright torch from the side to be sure. When no mask is present I cans see a bright set of aerosols. No aerosols through the mask.
It’s still nowhere near a good enough test. A good mask is like a good pair of shoes, it’s important to try it out over a period of at least an hour to see if it has any faults – leaks and comfort.
1. You need to measure the vacuum pressure drop across the mask. Smaller pressure drop is better. Any mask you can’t breathe through isn’t worth squat. There are far too many (particularly those damn filter paper ones) that block all air flow, forcing the air around the outside bypassing the filter. A person has to breathe.
2. The mask must be comfortable and seal around the edges against the face all the way around. Far too many let air in and out up the sides of the nose into the eyes. Of those that don’t direct air into the eyes, all have the problem of being extremely uncomfortable on the bridge of the nose.
3. Opening and closing the mouth mustn’t upset the mask positioning. Set it up wrongly and a single yawn will pull the mask off the nose. None of my masks have this problem. My skimpy mask seals all around the mouth on inward breaths but not on outward breaths, that makes it possible to open and close the mouth arbitrarily wide while talking and yawning without affecting the positioning and seal.
4. Those masks that have elastic that wraps around the backs of the ears hurt the ears, often quite badly.
5. Durability. A good mask is machine washable.
