Say if you made a mask from that material Moll mentioned jersey interlock

A moulded plastic pierce could go on top of the nose and over the top of the jersey interlock material

cut it to size and mould it to shape using the heat gun then drill two holes to keep it in place

there are thermoplastic products that can be easily moulded into shape such as these ones

No seriously, the top part of a t-shirt. Double layered front and back with a sheet of kitchen towel in between. Cut the sleeves so they form ribbons to tie it on around your head.

after sizing

drill two holes one on either side in the middle of the moulded plastic piece (for elastic to go under the chin)

drill another two holes at the back of the plastic on either side (for elastic to go around the back of the head)

drill before moulding

then mould the plastic

then you can attach elastic to the moulded piece to go from hole then under the chin to the other hole

attach elastic on the other two holes to go around the head

Sew a channel at the top of the fabric. Cut a piece of tie wire or unfold a paper clip. Bends the very end bits over to make a loop so it won’t pierce through the fabric or you. Run the wire through the channel.
Now you can mould the top of your mask to fit your nose and face with less gap. Simples.
Make several masks so you can change them often and wash them properly.

Or glue. Drape the fabric over the nose and cover it in glue, something like a PVA glue, soft yet strong. Leave it until the glue sets then peel off. I have used PVA glue to copy fingerprints. No need for a pinching piece of metal or for a hem in the fabric that way.

Dope the cloth in a rapid-hardening plastic, say, 50:50 v/v Gelatin:milk. Should go off a lot faster than PVC.

Anything not harmful would do.

Spray deodorant? Spray disinfectant?

A little spritz like that, let it dry/evaporate, mask is still good.

Even if you ditch the tested mask, at least you know that the rest of that type/batch should be good. And that the other types aren’t any use.

A face mask is a fashion statement.
Has anyone started selling emoticon stickers for face masks yet? A smiley face.

I used fly spray.

Jersey interlock fabric passes this test very easily. No aerosols get through. I lit the spray with a bright torch from the side to be sure. When no mask is present I cans see a bright set of aerosols. No aerosols through the mask.

It’s still nowhere near a good enough test. A good mask is like a good pair of shoes, it’s important to try it out over a period of at least an hour to see if it has any faults – leaks and comfort.

1. You need to measure the vacuum pressure drop across the mask. Smaller pressure drop is better. Any mask you can’t breathe through isn’t worth squat. There are far too many (particularly those damn filter paper ones) that block all air flow, forcing the air around the outside bypassing the filter. A person has to breathe.

2. The mask must be comfortable and seal around the edges against the face all the way around. Far too many let air in and out up the sides of the nose into the eyes. Of those that don’t direct air into the eyes, all have the problem of being extremely uncomfortable on the bridge of the nose.

3. Opening and closing the mouth mustn’t upset the mask positioning. Set it up wrongly and a single yawn will pull the mask off the nose. None of my masks have this problem. My skimpy mask seals all around the mouth on inward breaths but not on outward breaths, that makes it possible to open and close the mouth arbitrarily wide while talking and yawning without affecting the positioning and seal.

4. Those masks that have elastic that wraps around the backs of the ears hurt the ears, often quite badly.

5. Durability. A good mask is machine washable.

‘…many experts agree that wearing a mask in public could help prevent the spread of the disease…’

Many?

How many? Which many?

“could help”?

Well, pouring chicken blood over your head and dancing counter-clockwise in the nude under the light of a half-moon could help, too.

References, please.
