Just spoke to a nurse over the phone going over my 6 monthly health plan.

I said I was wearing wool mittens going shopping.

she said that was not a good idea because the wool can hold bacteria and viruses.

ok.

and advised to clean hands before and after shopping using a hand sanitizer in the car.

ok, I’ll get in the habit of doing that.

You should probably be staying at home. But if you do go out you could add showering and changing clothes on return home too.

Management here sent around a message, in response to a query from staff member, saying don’t worry, all of the cars (50 of them) in our car pool would be provided with hand sanitiser.

Someone from Pharmacy came up and wanted to know where we’d got all that sanitiser.

I pointed to the 2/3 bottle on the counter, and said, ‘there’s our entire stock’.

No supplies of sanitiser yet received, and we’re not holding our breath waiting for it.

My IGA is a click and collect. Order and pay on line. And you can ring to say you are ready to pick it up and they will bring it out to the car here.

Woolies and Coles are doing limited deliveries. It doesn’t include me and I am not happy Jan.

Perhaps if you rang around informing them you are one of the more vulnerable and see what is available. There are lots of stories of people that have spent a long time filling out the online order form to find out there is no service.

Online shopping seems more hygienic

The IGA supermarket here can have more than 20 workers at any one time plus twenty + shoppers there at anyone time and wool worths in Ballarat can have hundreds of shoppers at peak times

Removing oneself from that seems a good idea.

Safer for workers, safer for shoppers.

I was just listening to JJJ hack It appears that the owners of the virus-hit cruise ship Ruby Princess failed to clean the ship properly before new passengers.

Hygiene in ships not carried out properly has serious implications for new passengers.

There is a class action happening.

So far no-one has refused cash around here. As there is a preponderance of old farts, quite a few of whom only have cash, the shops have decided that it’s best to take the money. They mostly just have some disposable gloves by the till which they use. The hardware and produce stores have accounts. They all know their clients, so we aren’t signing on the gadgets for purchases at the moment. I have offered to sign – they just say “up to you”. A bit laid back here.

Ultraviolet LEDs prove effective in eliminating coronavirus from surfaces and, potentially, air and water

Researchers are developing ultraviolet LEDs that have the ability to decontaminate surfaces — and potentially air and water — that have come in contact with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Look up “Boomerang Bags”. Volunteers in Australia are doing good stuff – including Mrs V, who has made hundreds of bags.

Paper Towels Could Remove Virus Missed by Poor Hand Washing, Study Indicates

from article

But for 10 out of 11 surfaces sampled, the jet method left “significantly greater environmental contamination”.

Microbes were found on all surfaces touched after using the jet dryer, with contamination on average 10 times higher than after the use of paper towels.

The authors said the study was particularly relevant for hospital settings.

Contaminated air is being pulled into the air-dryer

An option would be to use filtered air with washable filters

or have a separate air system for the air dryers

or zap the air with UV

Why couldn’t they test that?

I’m not sure it is the air being pulled in that is the problem…

Which surfaces in your home are most likely to harbour coronavirus?

Could infectious viral particles be on the parcel that just got delivered? Or the fruit your partner bought home from the supermarket? Or the crosswalk button you pushed out on your daily walk?

Many people are concerned about how the virus could spread, but the good news at this stage is we aren’t seeing any real evidence of transmission from things coming into the home, says virologist Tim Newsome of the University of Sydney.
