Some Muslim sects forbid touching between members of the opposite sex outside the family.
It’s a pretty narrow thing, outside of KSA. I’ve met hundreds of Muslims of both sexes through work and personal life and I’ve met precisely one woman who wouldn’t shake hands: an Omani student, who preferred to clasp her hands together and do a little bow instead.

Easy enough to say, but what if the theocracy is inspired enough to over turn the royal family (they being mostly reasonable) about it, then you get Sunni religious leadership.

You need to take a good look at yourself and see if you’re the kind of person that God wants you to be.
It’s no big thing, it’s a small thing, what… people… think(?).
Help me somebody.
There’s no escape from Him. He’s so high you can’t get over Him. He’s so low you can’t get under Him. He’s so wide you can’t get around Him. If you make your bed in Heaven He’s there. If you make your bed in Hell He’s there. He’s everywhere.

Yes, yes it is. It’s simple to get a starter going. Easy to throw everything into a breadmaker and let that robot do the work. Ours has failed. We now make it by hand and rise it and bake it in a loaf tin. Hand mixed at the beginning. No kneading.
Starter gets re-fed after taking the appropriate amount out for the bread, and goes straight back into the fridge.

I was looking into making a sourdough starter the other day, the same day that I dug out the potatoes and sorted out the pots and vegetable seeds.
The seeds are still in their packets, the potatoes still in their bucket (although I did find another large potato on the lawn underneath the clothesline this morning that I had dropped/lost), and the sourdough starter idea has been scrapped for now as the supermarket doesn’t have flour of any type anyway. Tomorrow is another day.

The stand out track on the album is one that features a post mortem verse by John Lennon pieced together from an old unreleased demo tape from Sgt Peppers.
A legal battle with Yoko Ono is taken up over it and the media hype ensures a number 1 spot on billboard for about 2 weeks. Within 2 months it will drop off the charts completely.
Tickets to their live show cost upwards of 300 dollars and they tour for 1 year/30 dates worldwide. 2 dates will cancel due to health of one of the members and the last 3 shows will have another British music legend (Eric Clapton, John Paul Jones etc.) to replace that member.

so you see, President Trump (shown in each frame) has blamed various things on the World Health Organisation (WHO) and is speaking about it, and Fox News have placed headlines about it in the chyron, using the normal journalistic use of a colon to mark attribution of a claim.
However, because they have used all-caps, an alternative jocular interpretation is that they are using the English word who, and hence instead meaning that these statements are being made about Trump himself.

Chyron Corporation
The company was founded in 1966 as Systems Resources Corporation. In its early days it was renamed “Chiron,” named after the centaur Chiron in Greek mythology.
Chiron
Chiron was notable throughout Greek mythology for his youth-nurturing nature. His personal skills tend to match those of his foster father Apollo, who taught the young centaur the art of medicine, herbs, music, archery, hunting, gymnastics and prophecy, and made him rise above his beastly nature. Chiron was known for his knowledge and skill with medicine, and thus was credited with the discovery of botany and pharmacy, the science of herbs and medicine.
——
So you might say that Chiron was the Centaur for Disease Control.

My memory may be wrong but I sort of remember that some farmers or some such went to an island where it was being trialed, grabbed some infected rabbits & released them on the mainland.
Vrius accidentally escaped from Wardang Island test site in 1995.

It does, if you substitute ‘police investigation’ for ‘whippy stick’, and ‘cruise line company’ for ‘rooster’.
Distracts attention from the facts for a little while in just the same way.

You’re really gunning this theory that letting people off the boat was some sort of conspiracy. Do you think the WA police were somehow involved?

I was thinking more of the Grubby Princess on the other side of the country, and the coincidences that the passengers disembarked from it included the parents-in-law of the Assistant Minister for Defence, and a sizeable contingent from the happy-clappy church patronised by both that same Assistant Minister and our heroic PM.

There was talk of the Princess being allowed to sail away as early as tomorrow.
Our Gladys would be pleased to see a tangible reminder of the affair disappear over the horizon. The NSW Police could then (as they often do in similar inquiries) conclude that society is to blame, and we can all forget all about it. All of us. Forget. Completely.

The Feds had no authority to ‘overrule’. Health issues are a State matter, in the end. They had to squeeze Gladys to get her to give the word.
The Canberra folks would simply deny everything, and leave her holding the bag.

Border Force biosecurity has to work under the Biosecurity Act 2015 which replaced the Quarantine Act 1908.
The Biosecurity Act provides for the Agriculture Minister (yes, Agriculture) to override State rules or decisions in implementing measure that he/she believes are necessary for preventing the spread of a pest or disease.
The Act makes no provision for overriding State measures aimed a the control of the spread of a disease. It does provide for Federal action where such measures are not in place, or are not considered adequate by the Ministers for Health and Agriculture.
Chapter 1 Section 8 says that ‘This Act does not exclude or limit the operation of a law of a State or Territory that is capable of operating concurrently with this Act (except as referred to in subsection’.
In other words, if the States are doing the right thing, in line with the purpose of the Biosecurity Act, then their actions need not be overriden by Federal actions to enforce the containment of the spread of a disease.
Nowhere does the Act give license for Border Force to overturn any State measures aimed at confining the spread of a disease, including compelling the State to allow a ship with a disease aboard to dock.
Whoops, i must make corrections.
All that about the Agriculture Minister: yeah, he/she has a role, but, of course so does the Health Minister.
I didn’t edit my draft as well as i should have.
Also, reference:
http://extwprlegs1.fao.org/docs/pdf/aus159567.pdf
and if you read, you’ll find that the ‘except in subsection…’ bits don’t have any effect on the operation of State laws or actions that are compatible with the Act.

The oil market runs on futures trading. Essentially betting on the future price of oil, and trying to offload ownership of oil that hasn’t yet been produced at a higher price than you paid for it.
With negative price, the futures traders have to pay people to take the futures off their hands, or else risk having to actually accept delivery of the actual physical oil. Vast quantities of it.
This is something that they never expected to have to do, or are equipped to do.
It’s a good lurk, except when it turns around and bites you in the bum.

Wow, a quarter of a million people get together at Cheltenham races to see “Corona Virus” win.
I really think that Virgin Australia has just been Ansett all over again.
Air New Zealand took over Ansett, and began stripping it of everything. They took whatever earnings it made to NZ, and ran Ansett on the smell of an oily rag. They took stocks of parts and equipment from Ansett (including entire jet engines) and quietly transferred them to NZ. They indulged in stupid and wasteful practices (flying aircraft empty to NZ just to give techs there something to do/experience on the type – had to be empty as they were out of certification).
Ansett was a throwaway to Air NZ. It was there to be bled dry, and scrapped without a thought when it had nothing left to offer.

That’s not a bad outline of what happened, but be assured there was an awful lot of skullduggery that the article only hints at, and which people inside the airline knew much more about.
As well, it glosses over some things. It says that ‘Employees ended up receiving 96% of their entitlements’.
That should read ‘Some employees ended up receiving 96% of their entitlements. Some got bugger all, and others got a lot less than 96%’.

Even prior to the takeover by AirNZ, the management and owners of the company were profligate and stupid. Behind years of protectionism they had accumulated a fleet of small numbers of mixed types in dribs and drabs. They faced open competition just as their first generation of jets were nearing the end of their useful lives and needing replacement. They got into debt. The company was badly run when it needed a revamp and some strategic direction. AirNZ were looking to expand and saw an “easy” target in buying Ansett rather than building logically and carefully. They pretty much took on a mountain of debt to swallow a creature far larger than themselves. They choked. The debt repayments swallowed up all the profits, and the company was still badly organised and in need of a fleet revamp and standardisation. AirNZ had no capacity left to undertake such a project and the finances spiraled out of control until they collapsed. The collapse was almost inevitable, the only winners were those who sold their shares to AirNZ.

Ansett was in some trouble, as you say. They’d definitely become complacent, and the board was moribund. The board room was just where some people went to await a well-heeled retirement, and they weren’t really interested in running an airline (except insofar as it gave them free travel).
Air NZ were never really interested in making Ansett a going concern. They took it on solely as a source of materials and training. They serviced its debts until they decided it had nothing left that they wanted, and they let it fail. They would have taken Aust govt money, and eventually abandoned it (like the car firms did), but the govt wouldn’t go for it.
Air NZ didn’t give a toss about Australian domestic services, and the collapse of Ansett just removed a competitor in the shape of Ansett Nz, and eliminated a competitor on Asian routes that Ansett had been servicing. Which was nice for them.
Ansett was also handy for AirNZ in that Air NZ could cook the books a bit, and transfer some of its costs, debts and losses to Ansett.
Made Air NZ’s bottom line look rather better, and Ansett could go to buggery. Which it did, in the end.
I’m impressed. WOW! I didn’t know we had such quality and experience in multi national corporate management on here. I’m in awe. Keep up the good work. Anything less than 2B is a serious breach of WH&S. You’re just asking for Carpal Tunnel problems.

Pretty sure I posted this last night, but not to this thread. So just in case….
(not my work – Pinched from the Internets)
1. You MUST NOT leave the house for any reason, but if you have a reason, you can leave the house.
2. Masks are useless at protecting you against the virus, but you may have to wear one because it can save lives, but they may not work, but they may be mandatory, but maybe not.
3. Shops are closed, except those shops that are open.
4. You must not go to work but you can get another job and go to work.
5. You should not go to the Doctor’s or to the hospital unless you have to go there, unless you are too poorly to go there.
6. This virus can kill people, but don’t be scared of it. It can only kill those people who are vulnerable or those people who are not vulnerable. It’s possible to contain and control it, sometimes, except that sometimes it actually leads to a global disaster.
7. Gloves won’t help, but they can still help so wear them sometimes, or not.
8. STAY HOME, but it’s important to go out.
9. There is no shortage of groceries in the supermarkets, but there are many things missing. Sometimes you won’t need loo rolls but you should buy some just in case you need some.
10. The virus has no effect on children except those children it affects.
11. Animals are not affected, but there was a cat that tested positive in Belgium in February when no one had been tested, plus a few tigers here and there…
12. Stay 2 metres away from tigers (see point 11).
13. You will have many symptoms if you get the virus, but you can also get symptoms without getting the virus, get the virus without having any symptoms or be contagious without having symptoms, or be non contagious with symptoms…it’s a sort of lucky/unlucky dip.
14. To help protect yourself you should eat well and exercise, but eat whatever you have on hand as it’s better not to go to the shops, unless you need toilet roll or a fence panel.
15. It’s important to get fresh air but don’t go to parks but go for a walk. But don’t sit down, except if you are old, but not for too long or if you are pregnant or if you’re not old or pregnant but need to sit down. If you do sit down don’t eat your picnic, unless you’ve had a long walk, which you are/aren’t allowed to do if you’re old or pregnant.
16. Don’t visit old people but you have to take care of the old people and bring them food and medication.
17. If you are sick, you can go out when you are better but anyone else in your household can’t go out when you are better unless they need to go out.
18. You can get restaurant food delivered to the house. These deliveries are safe. But groceries you bring back to your house have to be decontaminated outside for 3 hours including frozen pizza.
19. You can’t see your older mother or grandmother, but they can take a taxi and meet an older taxi driver.
20. You are safe if you maintain the safe social distance when out but you can’t go out with friends or strangers at the safe social distance.
21. The virus remains active on different surfaces for two hours … or four hours…or six hours… I mean days, not hours. But it needs a damp environment. Or a cold environment that is warm and dry… in the air, as long as the air is not plastic.
22. Schools are closed so you need to home educate your children, unless you can send them to school because you’re not at home. If you are at home you can home educate your children using various portals and virtual class rooms, unless you have poor internet, or more than one child and only one computer, or you are working from home. Baking cakes can be considered maths, science or art. If you are home educating you can include household chores within their education. If you are home educating you can start drinking at 10am.
23. If you are not home educating children you can also start drinking at 10am.
24. The number of corona related deaths will be announced daily but we don’t know how many people are infected as they are only testing those who are almost dead to find out if that’s what they will die of. The people who die of corona who aren’t counted, won’t or will be counted but maybe not.
25. We should stay in locked down until the virus stops infecting people but it will only stop infecting people if we all get infected so it’s important we get infected and some don’t get infected.
26. You can join your neighbours for a street party and turn your music up for an outside disco and your neighbours won’t call the police. People in another street are allowed to call the police about your music whilst also having a party which you are allowed to call the police about.
27. No business will go down due to Coronavirus except those businesses that will go down due to Coronavirus.

Yeah OK, well I’m sorry you suffered that, mate. I was also both victim and witness to some pretty awful acts of abuse. As much as I would love for the crucifixion of a distant and diffuse entity to be the solution (because, fucks knows, that would be so much easier), I’m not sure it’s going to help. The best we can do, it seems to me, is to resist the influence of bad people, bad ideas, and bad thoughts.

You spend your whole life preparing.
You build a nuclear survivable bunker under the garage and stock it with MREs, cases of Spam, and Special Forces tactical gear sold by genuine Navy SEALs from the Home Shopping Network.
You spend tens of thousands on enough guns and ammo to overthrow a modest sized Central American country. You have an illegally purchased Russian sniper rifle big enough to bring down a charging rhino at a thousand yards. Each bullet costs $15 dollars, and your kids had to go without dental care, but it’ll be worth it if you’re ever attacked by a Terminator … or enraged African wildlife after the fall of civilization. The damn kids can gum rhino meat and be grateful.
You grow a giant SEAL man beard and cultivate a thousand yard stare so the ragged survivors of the wasteland know you’re not to be trifled with as you squint through your genuine SEAL Tacticool sunglasses (order now, and we’ll throw in a second pair free!).
You’re prepared to drink your own piss if necessary.
Anything to survive. You’re ready.
And it turns out the apocalypse is mostly just everybody staying home and learning how to bake bread on Twitter.

In number of reported cases they are as bad as the next 5 combined – Italy, Spain, France, Germany and UK. But they all think Trump is doing great.

The population of the USA is basically the same as those 5 combined and the total number of cases closely matches as well. So Trump’s doing about the same as the total for those countries – at the moment.

Except that they had about a month’s warning to get ready, based on what they could see happening in Italy.
Last week they were only as many as the next 4 combined, the week before only the next 3. They are growing at a much faster rate and are still miles away from turning the corner. They’ll hit one million cases over the weekend.

I’m following a very long thread on facebook in which an American ex-military dude is arguing no one has the right to take away freedoms, even when people can’t be trusted not to go out and infect others. His girlfriend, who has serious medical issues and will certainly die if she contra ts COVID, argues that it’s precisely because you cannot trust people to do the right thing that we need to limit freedoms.
