According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, countries that have the ability to take advantage of new renewable energy technologies can expect to enhance their global influence and reach in the future.
And it has singled out Australia as a potential new energy leader.

just not with the current people in charge
There is a fair bit going on with renewable energy tech in Oz, in spite of the gov.
Australia has a bad habit of being a world leader in innovation and then falling by the wayside when it comes to manufacturing. I know someone from Uni Qld who was working on hybrid diesel-electric cars back before the early 1980s. Spent his whole career improving the technology, then ignored when it came time for worldwide manufacturing starting in 1997.
Uni NSW has been the world leader in high efficiency solar cells. CSIRO has been working on literally scores of renewable energy projects. A close colleague was working on a large scale solar-powered vertical turbine when I left. Another colleague on flexible solar cells printed on plastic. Even I did a lot of work on biodiesel from algae, quoted on a job for predicting the effects of climate change, and quoted on a job for improving the thermal design of electric cars.
Almost all this work on renewable energy in Australia has government support. Who else would?
Well of course major polluters like oil companies and car manufacturers also fund renewable energy. But, apart from our government, oil companies and car manufacturers, nobody.
Certainly not activists. They would never put their hand in their pocket to fund renewable energy projects, the hypocrites.
