EEEEK!!

I had to get a tooth drilled last month. The local dentist couldn’t finish it off. Something about the root canal begin too narrow, so they patched it up, and referred to a “specialist”. Cost? $310.

Made a booking with the “specialist” and they tell me cost will be between $2,400 – $2,700 to fix it.

Would you spend that much on just one tooth?

Not in my present circumstances.

But I imagine some people would find that a trifling expense.

I did. Quite a few years ago I had a similar problem. My dentist couldn’t do the root canal work for that reason. The specialist in Melbourne cost me $500 a visit (there were two of them) and then I had a gold crown fitted locally, which cost around $1000. It’s lasted very, very well and it was suggested it will last me out even if I manage to initiate all my longevity genes. I didn’t want a gap or a plate.

Mrs m says over $1,000 for a root canal. And that was many years ago.

Depends on the tooth if it’s one further to the back of the mouth and not overly necessary probably not

Yes. If you start extracting teeth, the others are not retained in place and things can begin to go downhill fast.

Bring needle/drill phobic it would cost me for an anesthetist as well. So, no.

You surprise me. I used to be needle-phobic, having to lie flat on a bed to have blood taken, otherwise I would feel faint. All the testing required during my pregnancies quickly healed me of that fear. I thought you would have had enough done by now to also have been cured.

I’ve only lost one of my adult teeth, a molar on the left upper jaw that didn’t like being there for some reason, in my twenties.

The rest have returned sterling service for many years, with minimal maintenance apart from a fairly sugar-free diet and regular brushing.

Haven’t actually seen a dentist this century.

I’m lucky to have not lost any teeth (except wisdom teeth). I was pretty lazy with my teeth and they were in bad shape. I’ve paid for my dentist’s retirement. I still have checkups because the consequences of my laziness will never go completely away.

I still have my wisdom teeth. I’ve had a couple of crowns in the last year (well over $1000 each) and root canal therapy with crown some years back, which cost (IIRC) $1700.

Check out your insurance.

They’ll probably cover about $100 of it (if you have dental “cover” that is).

FTR my dentist recommends HCF for decent dental cover.

You could fly to Thailand, get the tooth fixed, lay about on a beach for a few days and drink your fill all cheaper than $2,500.

Or perhaps not…

As a rough figure you should pay less than two thirty for a tooth

It’s tempting. And while there, get all the others smashed and reset too.
