I’ve decided this will be a good thread to start for the next summer growing season. As some of us (including me) have had issues with the heat and plants not surviving.
I’m going to bookmark this link for easy access and reading through out the year.
My biggest problem this summer, was I lost my mojo with gardening after my ankle/leg business, Now its time to get it back and take charge of my vegie gardening.
The best way to do this and correct me if I am wrong and to plan ahead.
First thing I need to do before I get too far ahead in bales….is a tarp, maybe even 2 from the cheap shops. Pop them on the brinks in the duck shed, to keep the moisture from coming up through the ground and bricks over the wetting months.

Over the cooler months, collect bales for mulching, I’m going to see how I go in finding bales of barley straw as well. A tarp will be kept in the boot of the car in case while out and about a farmer has a sign up selling cheaper bales.
Concentrate on what I really want to go in the summer months. Then look at what needs to be done to protect those more tender plants in heat wave times.
This now leads me to protection.
Need to buy up on stakes and some shade cloth. Makes a note to see if Jim-Bob can source any through work again. Last load replaced the whole area around by the rainwater tank. I do have some of the old shade cloth that was removed.
Anything else you can think of that I haven’t covered….please pop it up here. All thoughts would be so appreciated…..

We bought an elcheapo gazebo to take to Phillip Island and it blew over and broke in the wind as soon as it was put up. maybe a bit TOO windy for it but unless you have no wind I think they are pretty useless. if you want something fairly permanent then you need a strong frame I think.

I want some thing easy that I can do.
This is why I thought stakes in the soil and I can just clip the shade cloth on to the stakes……
I have to think of what I can manage as on really hot weather the elf isn’t any good for helping.
But it was a great idea Thee and thanks:D

deciduous fruit trees are your friends. once they grow tall they give summer shade – winter sun.

Hmm, might think about that for my vegie bed though. We don’t get much wind.

The tarp is not a good idea as it can cause root rot by not allowing water to soak away. What I have done to beat the heat on my raised bed is put 1 post at each corner and then put a piece of shade cloth over the bed to help keep it cooler and shaded. on 1 side I have a nellie kellie growing and put some wiremesh there to let it climb on and once it is enough it will shade the bed on the western side next summer. As metioned in previous post pics to you if you would put them up for me please. :)

Left me speechless…………LOL
The tarp is to go in the duck shed to store the straw on until needed over the wetter months. Not in the garden:)

The only thing I can add here.. I’d netted the strawb and bell pepper beds to birds and those nets were easy to throw an old sheet over and peg in place. they stayed put even in wild winds. The netting I’d placed over tall stakes and used bricks to keep down. (I can lift one side to get to the fruit) These 2 beds of plants didn’t have a single burnt leaf in the scorcher, so I intend to do this , where I can, to easily cover other heat sensitive things. ASAP.
Just why I never thought to do that before the scorcher, beats me!
