The Siberian Ice Maiden is a woman who died in the 5th century BC, and whose mummified remains were found under a burial mound in the Altai Republic in 1993. (The Altai Republic is part of the Russian Federation, and is adjacent to Mongolia and Kazakhstan).
Skull measurements indicated that she was likely Indo-European. She was around 25-26 years old at the time of death. Cause of death was probably breast cancer. She was buried with a small container of marijuana which may have been for pain-relief.
Her coffin was carved with deer images. She had a shaven head, but wore a horse-hair wig, at the front of which sat a decorative wooden horse. On the top of her head was “a stick made from felt, wrapped with black tissue and decorated with small figures of birds in golden foil. “
She was buried in a long shirt made of Chinese silk. In the chamber were the remains of six horses, all oriented to align with the woman, a metal mirror, decorated saddles made of felt, some jewellery, and some items of food.
One of the most remarkable things about the mummy is the ornate well-preserved tattoos, mostly of stylised animals. This below is found on her shoulder and upper arm, and is described as being a deer with a griffin’s beak and a goat’s horns. The tattoos were made with ash and animal fat.
