If only he would make it unsquished :D
I need to see some nice wildlife today to put myself back in balance. Someone at work was telling me about how their spouse killed a snake on the weekend. Reckoned it was injured but if someone says “come help I’ve got a snake” and your first reaction is to grab a shovel – I reckon they would’ve killed it even if it was in perfect health. I just don’t get why you would call your neighbour, and not the local snake handler?? (unless your neighbour is a snake handler, but that’s not the case in this story)
Sigh.

Oh Sweet:)
I used to have a black hairy bugger down between the duck shed and the elf’s shed. Used to see it each night when I put the ducks to bed. Torch used to blind it each night I am sure. I was sad when it disappeared.
Wow, I’m an arachnophobe from way back but I must be mellowing because I think that’s quite a cute spidie. Might feel differently if I’d just walked into its web though, LOL! I’m a master of the spider dance. :D
I’m not too bad with the eight legged ones these days except for huntsmans. Huntsmans and I are never going to agree to live harmoniously unless they stick to the trees and leave my house and car alone…
It’s a orb weaver of some kind like Lucky said…. they are very clever spiders; they would often spin their webs across the back of our yard in Luckyland, an done would walk through the webs on route to the outhouse. All their hardwork only for ol’ me to bust up during one of my Big Shifts… they soon got the message as they learned where the human traffic was, they would then run their webs parallel to the path.
Yours is a female spider Thee.

Yes a common garden orb weaver. Harmless unless you force it to bite. Most spiders are. I’ve had them build their orbinside my house.. difficult to get the concept across to them that moving to a different spot is a better idea.
in my garden
birds get them. so far four or so spiders have spun their webs on hot nights to corner the insect trade between the post and beam of our pergola. none still exist because murray magpie and willy wagtail consider them to be delicious.
thanks everyone, RB love your pic !!!

that’s because the high traffic areas are where the food goes…
Nasty looking and if I walked into one I would need a defibrillator on hand. Spiders are nice but not on a touchy feely basis as far as I am concerned. Mind you I have several daddylonglegs in my home and they keep the insects away. My grandkids were originally wary of them but now name the few they know. Nothing like having Norman walking up your walls at night.

Arachnophobes need only know that Australian spiders are not after your blood.
that if a sydney funnelweb spider is in your undies.. then you should not have left them on the floor.
>that if a sydney funnelweb spider is in your undies..
That’s an awkward situation.
If you discover it when it bites you then your life will never be the same again..

I’m not a touchy feely type about spiders either, Pete. There are plenty about here and I let them do their thing….outside the house. Some are really beautiful. I detest walking into a web first thing in the morning. It’s always all over my face. Don’t like it at all.

A friend who had at the time recently purchased a block of Macadamia trees asked me what could he do to stop the beetles that came to eat his macadamia trees overnight. “I’d prefer to do it without spraying and I know you are into being organic. So what would you do?”
I said: well as you may expect I’ll tell you not to spray but I’ll also tell you why. If you don’t spray you won’t kill the spiders and the spiders will solve your beetle problem. He called me back within the month and said; “Wow I can’t believe how well that worked. The spider webs were like strings of orange jewels, so many beetles. I’ve only made one change to your advice. I’ve put my fishing rod on the front of the tractor so that it breaks all the webs before they hit me on the face. Thanks that saved me thousands of dollars.”

Hehehe :) My family has a history of uncreative animal names, so we have.. Bathroom Spider, and Kitchen Spider. There are actually about four or five kitchen spiders now, but they’re all Kitchen Spider.
Don’t see many daddy longlegs these days – I wonder if Bathroom and Kitchen Spider (furry black house spiders) eat them??

Black house spiders are harder to kill with flyspray. I haven’t observed anything eating daddy long legs other than other daddy long legs.

yes I have shown it before. It’s my fave for arachnophobes.
My sister-in-law hasn’t been comfortable with me ever since I jumped on her for encouraging arachnophobia in her daughter. The fear of spiders may be real for some but it is totally unfounded. Snakes and spiders only bite when you try to hurt them or when you barge through their hose without knocking.
I bite too when you try that. ;)
The original spider in this thread is a harmless orb weaver commonly found in most Australian gardens and many gardens around the world. The larger spider seen above is a golden orb weaver which is also quite harmless. Orb weavers catch and remove many pests from your garden and they are so harmless that I’ve even allowed one of them to cut me off from the beer fridge at night because I love their webs.

I actually call them buddha spiders because so many have the image of a sitting buddha on their abdomen.
Growing up in the outback, we used to see thousands of webs laced between the salt bushes in the paddocks in the early hours of the morning.
The sun would shine on them and the webs used to glisten with the morning dew on them. They were so beautiful and almost magical to look at.

They are very small spidders and generally go unnoticed. I have heaps of them around my yard but due to the 3D nature of the beast, the shallow depths of field created in attempting macrofocusing and.. the fact that these spiders are really sensitive to any closeness and run off to hide.. jut when you think you have them in focus… I rarely get useable photos

My theory is that it takes 3 or 4 days of destroying their web in order to move the spider on.

We’ve been talking about bigger spiders(apart from the jewel spiders).
This one happened to land on my leg as I was attempting to catch one of the weirdest flies I had ever seen.. which other flew off before I had a camera ready. However I looked down at my knee and here was this spider seeming to be feasting off something very small on my skin by using feather like tools to brush food into mouth.. What food you say? well the food was too small for me to see but it was on my skin..

What food you say? well the food was too small for me to see but it was on my skin..
Damn what fine and clear photo:D
Blue ribbon to you.

;) thanks but I do believe I could have done better if I had time to change lenses.
nothing wrong with the shot of the spider feeding off your skin RB. having a spider feed off your skin is dubious but the photo is great.

You need to grow the snails properly from the correct stock to be able to eat them.
I knew a lady of French (Algerian) origin who cooked her garden snails. The restaurant ones are a particular species I think though.
I’ve known people who said their grandmother cooked them all the time and that he loved them.
well we dared him to eat the next snail he came across. He said that it didn’t taste like grandmas and pulled a face .. spat it out.
Partly this is due to te lengthy process of salting the snails to remove the slime
A lot of it is due to what the snails have eaten
and yes Escargot are special snails.bluegreen said:

It was on the idiot box quite a few years ago, alady was using and selling the garden snails after she fed them a special diets of a period of time to clean their inners ?? Was an Aussie show BTW

yes, I understood that there was a lot of preparation that involved extensive salting.

They need to be kept and fed a special diet to purge them before eating. I saw it on the telly a few days ago.

not me.. I only eat the stuff the snails eat.
The edible snails are fed on bran to clean them up before we can eat them. Yuck anyway.

Garden snails are okay, you may need to purge them on bran before hand…

Oh No! I love oysters! I have tasted snails and I just don’t like the flavour. Yuck again.
>and yes Escargot are special snails.
Bet they don’t feel so special as they first taste the garlic…

me… I’d rather eat raw garlic.. than suck up snotty snails.. or oysters for that matter
and in fact.. that is indeed what I do.
>me… I’d rather eat raw garlic.. than suck up snotty snails.. or oysters for that matter
I used to love eating oysters off the rocks when I was fishing as a kid in the Brunswick River…
Never had snails, and I’m vego now anyway.

being a vego growing my own food sometimes if I pick brassicas in particular I have to be very careful or I find that I have either cooked it with slugs in it or.. I have chopped several slugs up into a salad.
The white cabbage moth larvae are another.

EWwwwwwwwwww.

Yeah .. it sorta puts one off their dinner.
Wow! This seems to have become the new chat thread, LOL! Interesting reading and some great photos! That jewel spider is pretty cool! The woven spider silk is pretty amazing too.
Roughbarked, hope you’re still with us and work comes your way soon so we don’t lose you. That little spidie of yours looks like what I refer to (probably incorrectly) as a jumping spider. I don’t think it was eating anything off your leg as they often sit there moving their little whatevers as if they are eating but I’m pretty sure they’re not. I think they are either ‘tasting’ their environment, or it’s a nervous habit when stared at by a human a thousand + times their size, LOL!
I must admit, I have developed a soft spot for the little jumping spiders in the last few years. It all started with a stunning close up photo of one on Scribbly that showed all its iridescent colours, and such a cute little face. Since then I’ve even allowed them to make their home within my home, a big step for someone who still nearly throws up at the sight of a huntsman.
I’ve been orb spider friendly for a few years too, just kept a long stick to break up the web of one that insisted on attaching our patio to the washing line at the old house. Don’t seem to have any orb weavers at the new place though.

Many thanks .. horty.. I do hope my life changes for the better too financially and creative wise. I am certainly still capable of working. It is more that I am an extremely odd bod which doesn’t augur well for me working for anyone other than myself. trouble is.. I can’t afford to pay me.
The extended dry spell and lack of confidence in supplies of water for irrigation make my skills in horticulture rather less called for.
I could try taking up growing marijuana instead but that is still illegal. I am a specialist in growing native plants so maybe I can work a niche out for myself that has few capable of competing.
Time spent on the slow dialup internet I have is .. becoming a problem with allowing me time to go and get work. So .. I’ll have to work on some form of compromise. Maybe I should do something with my internet skills and excellent patience.
any yes.. I thought it was a jumping spider too but it also made a strand of web when I got it to walk onto my finger so I could remove it to a safer place than up the leg of my shorts.
my garden is always an interesting place to play.

RB, I know you’re in the middle of nowhere but are you in or near a large town?Small town? What are the prospects of picking up a few odd jobs doing garden maintenance to tide you over until things look more promising for what you specialise in?
I know what you mean about being an odd bod, there’s a reason I work for myself too, LOL!

:) glad I’m not the only one. One of my casual bosses introduced me to his cousins one day.. as.. “this bloke could be a millionaire if he onlny used what is in his head to earn money” and another I used to work for many years ago.. and babysat his daughters for him.. reintroduced me to one of his now grown up daughters as.. “This is Peter.. he used to work for us but he didn’t like money”
Town, City of Griffith is 12 km away.. or thereabouts. Most of the work I get is on farms, mainly grafting fruit trees. I need to be able to drive to locations all over the place at the drop of a hat for that and worse still, to be able to get lots of work doing that one needs to be able to employ a team. In the past I have been a part of other teams but they cannot afford to keep me so that doesn’t augur well for me to be able to keep a team waiting until I find work for them.
Still, watch this space for native plants are becoming more interseting to many people.. for food and medicine let alone for drought resistance and re-establishment of native environs. I can offer a lot to people who want to invest in such projects.

Yes but that’s still a medium to long term plan, you need something for now. Does Griffith have any gardens that need pruning? Lawns that need mowing? Even gutters that need cleaning? Anything to keep a roof over the head and food on the table…

:) I own the roof.. over my head .. no one is going to take it from me unless I cannot pay the rates. I’m a vego and I can generally feed myself as long as I can pay water rates and there is water to be had.
My problems include being able to pay for fuel and keep a vehicle running. Have been thinking it is about time I walked into one of the employment agencies and offer my skills within a 15 minute pushbike ride.
Jim’s and Jakes gardening franchises are here.. There are ample blokes doing gardening but I suppose there aren’t many doing .. native gardening.. ;)
any decent job.. they get some contractor in from Canberra or Wagga or anywhere else.. simply because they are established teams which are capable of bidding for contracts.
All I really need to do is get up from this computer get a haircut and get a job.. really.. it is just that I never have been one who saw earning money as more important than experiencing life. Until now.
