That looks good veg. I haven’t had many tomatoes yet except the cherry tomatoes. I have had to pull out 3 plants because of wilt (not sure whether it was fusarium or bacterial cause I didn’t look that closely). I have a couple of plants in another bed that don’t look to healthy, think they might be candidates for wilt also.

Oh I’d love to have gold laced Wyandottes again. Do the roosters get agressive when the hens are broody, or are they always a placid bird?

That he is. My current rooster is a New Hampshire/Isa Brown cross but he is destined for the pot, especially since he is an aggressive bugger. Goes me all the time, and I haven’t been able to assert authority over him, even though MrS has. He will be replaced by a Rhode Island red from one of our friends, because I prefer to keep the Rhode Island stain pure if I can (even though the last hatching wasn’t).

Sounds good. We are trying to be more sustainable too, but not sure about having goats and bees. They would be a lot of extra work and we don’t really have the time to look after them properly (not to mention I’d be scared of the bees LOL).

grr lost a msg.
Yes I see the queen but was an amateur beekeeeper for years and am about to begin again the hives are ready and just waiting for a swarm to happen and away we go.
I lost a heap of hives during the drought here in 1982/3 and was helped further by a plague of wax moth and ants
but still have most of the gear so back to work as there is nothing like honey straight from the hive. I used to sell quite a bit as I had 16 hives and it made for busy lifestyle as I was a shiftworker those days chasing trains :)
A good seller was honey comb at the time. It was fun watching people munching away and honey drippling everywhere from their mouths.
As a tip here is a good place to by bits from he’s fast to respond and cheap….including postage.

Took them Gloves off to use the camera, wasn’t the best idea I dot think, first time I used the suit one got in there with me, and I didn’t know what to do. It will be Interesting to see if the Non bee keepers can find the queens. Looked at that site before penders is good as well, its not much out of my way from work, or I’ve got to go down to the Newcastle to pick stuff up.

yep, little fluffy queen, Unmated, needs to go and mate with the drones. few other pictures see if you can find the queens in them, see the frist photo look closely in the cells and see if you can find a little white line, like a grain of sand thats the eggs the queen lays.

glad you have a place close by. I have to either travel to adelaide 310kms or internet….internet wins as it cheaper but miss out on seeing lucky1 & the elf….mmmmmmmm maybe the internet loses lol

yeah, theres a Amuter bee assocation in one of the local towns, we meet once a month. Not a good year for honey flows.

no its not but should be good this year with the floods and all though bushfires make it hard for native trees to flower
How many hives have you at the moment

a good idea there as it will improve the garden produce. I used to keep 1 in town and the neihbours got upset when I took it away as they reckoned their fruittrees ect didn’t do as well then

yep, but you get stung.

not if you are careful though its fun when 1 or 2 find a way into the bee suit. Then you learn the beekeepers strip dance ROTFPIMP

I’m not a bee-keeper, but I spotted the queen… so did GF.

6 week is the fast time we have done it in, should be able to rob the hives in the next few weeks, ill take photos then and weigh it all up, per hive (8 frames).

Does it turn white itself, or do you paint it white to make her easier to spot?

(sorry for disappearing there – had a mountain of washing up to do)

Ahh, cool. Went to a…. what do you call a honey-producing place? It wasn’t a meadery, they mainly sold ice cream and soaps and candles and things.

Anyway, they had a hive set up with clear plastic walls so you could see what was going on, and spot the Queen with her white dot.
