Recent thread about a swimming dinosaur makes me wonder.
Perhaps all dinosaurs could swim – if they had to.

Would it be true to say that more mammal/reptile species can swim than can’t swim?
If swimming meant the difference between life and death.

What mammals/reptiles can swim?
What mammals/reptiles can’t swim?

Swimming mammals would include say water rat, pangolin, cow, horse, wildebeest, caribou, grizzly bear, dog, leopard, elephant as well as more familiar swimming species. What about marsupials?

Among reptiles, eastern water dragon, tiger snake and marine iguana for starters. What about goannas?

Kangaroos swim, and do so when they are hot (if there’s water about).

I think all reptiles can swim and most mammals except things like bats.

Only specialised birds can swim.

Bats can swim.

Great apes and giraffes can’t

what’s swimming?

does floating with some leg movement qualify

what about exhausted swimmers that just float, that’d be a floating exhausted swimmer, or what about a a floating dead swimmer

what about youngsters of a swimming species, that can’t swim, or can’t swim to save their life

Surely giraffes could walk on the bottom and still have their heads above water?

The bat “swimming” in that article is simply a bat trying to fly.

nah, they can’t… the zoo has lemurs and gibbons on islands. I was skeptical that they couldn’t swim if they really needed to, and then I watched one drown after it fell from a branch… so I guess my skepticism was quelled.

they also have water surrounding the baboons (along with a high wall). I was told the baboons also don’t like water, but I also watched one catch a kill a duck in the water… so who knows what to believe anymore?

Baboons do hunt in shallow waters. Gorillas do feed in shallow waters but I doubt either of them can actually swim.

They have to hunt ducks like that because they’re not allowed to have shotguns.

Among large animals that can’t swim, I’ve heard of sheep and hedgehogs, but am not sure of either.

Interesting news about kangaroos swimming. I didn’t know that. I wonder what sort of swimming stroke they use, obviously not dog paddle. Reading link, I’m clearly wrong there, kangaroos do use dog paddle. Weird.

Oh good. That saves me the trouble of getting ethics committee approval for doing the experiments myself.
