James Taylor – You Can Close Your Eyes | The Story Behind The Song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LODOWahD7Oc
Woke up this morning
Put on my slippers
Walked in the kitchen and died
And oh what a feeling!
When my soul went through the ceiling
And on up into heaven I did ride
When I got there they did say
John, it happened this a’way
You slipped upon the floor
And hit your head
And all the angels say
Just before you passed away
These were the very last words
That you said
Please don’t bury me
Down in the cold cold ground
No, I’d druther have ‘em cut me up
And pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane
And the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears
If they don’t mind the size
Give my stomach to Milwaukee
If they run out of beer
Put my socks in a cedar box
Just get ‘em out of here
Venus de Milo can have my arms
Look out! I’ve got your nose
Sell my heart to the Junkman
And give my love to Rose
But please don’t bury me
Down in that cold, cold ground
No, I’d druther have ‘em cut me up
And pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane
And the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears
If they don’t mind the size
Give my feet to the footloose
Careless, fancy free
Give my knees to the needy
Don’t pull that stuff on me
Hand me down my walking cane
It’s a sin to tell a lie
Send my mouth way down south
And kiss my ass goodbye
But please don’t bury me
Down in that cold cold ground
No, I’d druther have ‘em cut me up
And pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane
And the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears
If they don’t mind the size

If we want to have an artistic community in the future, we need to support the one we’ve got right now.
The Lounge Room Sessions (link to Facebook page). The concept is simple – every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday night we’re inviting an Australian artist to perform a set from their lounge rooms, which is broadcast live to the Lounge Room Sessions Facebook page.
A link will be included alongside each post where viewers can make an optional contribution to the artist via a dedicated fundraising page, administered by TryBooking. 100% of all funds received are paid directly to the artist.
And it’s another chord progression.

The old Teles are my favourite guitar sound, but I have to go with the dynamic range and growl of the big humbuckers on the Gibson Knopfler uses on this track. As Douglas Adams says “…hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff drink.”
Did you listen to the CF Martin McTell uses on this thing? There’s not many steel-string acoustics I like more than the M225, but if you could get a little more bite out of that thing it would be worth buying.

Billy Bragg held a competition online to raise money for a charity – A challenge to vote on a song for him to cover. The result was totally unexpected and brilliant – A Taylor Swift song!
He makes a proper dog’s breakfast of it – references his own material, and sings flat – But he also treats Ms. Swift with reverence for her ballsy transformation, he raps her tweet to Trump in the middle, and reminds us of why he’s been at the top of the game for 30 years. This song kills viruses.

Just listened to this again:
Anaïs Mitchell – Before the Eyes of Storytelling Girls
I could tell you stories like the government tells lies
Oh, but no one listens any more
In the rooms the women come and go
Talking on the mobile phones
And the television talks about the war
When I was a baby there was laughter in my house
And my daddy smoked domestic cigarettes
Thursday nights on the radio live in concert
Live from Cairo, mother of Egypt
Mama, mama
Be with me
With the music in your breast
In your glittering evening dress
And the white flag in your fist trembling
I could tell you stories like the past was dead and gone
But I know nothing changes in this world
Every day the muezzin calls
Sun comes up and Baghdad falls
Before the eyes of storytelling girls
She was just a poor man’s daughter
Going down into the sultan’s bed
He was desert, she was water
And he remembered every word she said
She said and I say
Grandma, grandma
Be with me
In your tragic wedding gown
With your long hair hanging down
And the stories tumbling out
Tumbling
I could tell you stories like the government tells lies
Oh, but no one listens any more
In the rooms the women come and go
Talking on the mobile phones
And the television talks about the war
About the war
And the television talks about the war

For the benefit of others whose hearing is not as good as it was:
Somewhere in your wardrobe, I’d be willing to bet
There’s a t-shirt proudly bearing the silhouette
Of Che Guevara
He was revolutionary, yeah, he wore a cool hat
But behind the design, I think you might find
It’s not quite as simple as that:
Che was a bit of a homophobe
Che was a bit of a homophobe. (I think apparently)
Che was a bit of a homophobe
Che was a bit of a homophobe
This is my song in defence of the fence
A little sing-along, an anthem to ambivalence
The more you know, the harder you will find it
To make up your mind, it doesn’t really matter if you find
You can’t see which grass is greener
Chances are it’s neither, and either way it’s easier
To see the difference, when you’re sitting on the fence
Somewhere in your house, I’d be willing to bet
There’s a picture of that grinning hippy from Tibet
The Dalai Lama
He’s a lovely, funny fella, he gives soundbites galore
But let’s not forget that back in Tibet
Those funky monks used to dick the poor, yeah
And the Buddhist line about future lives is the perfect way to stop the powerless rising up (I reckon)
And he tells the poor they will live again, but he’s rich now so it’s easy for him to say
I’m taking the stand in defence of the fence
I got a little band playing anthems to ambivalence
We divide the world into terrorists and heroes
Into normal folk and weirdos
Into good people and pedos
Into things that give you cancer
And the things that cure cancer
And the things that don’t cause cancer
But there’s a chance they will cause cancer in the future
We divide the world to stop us feeling frightened
Into wrong and into right and
Into black and into white and
Into real men and fairies
Into status quo and scary
Yeah we want the world binary, binary
But it’s not that simple
And your dog has a bigger carbon footprint than a four wheel drive
Yea your dog has a bigger carbon footprint than a four wheel drive
And your dog has a bigger carbon footprint than a four wheel drive
And so does your baby, maybe you oughta trade him in for a Prius
(I thing you’d need a pretty big dog and a pretty small 4WD for the former to have a bigger CO2FP than the latter)
Also, I think this song is worth at least 1000 Prime Ministerial statements and retractions:
Organ2/ASLSP (As Slow as Possible) is a musical piece by John Cage and the subject of one of the longest-lasting musical performances yet undertaken. It was originally written in 1987 for organ and is adapted from the earlier work ASLSP 1985….
The performance of the organ version at St. Burchardi church in Halberstadt, Germany began in 2001 and is scheduled to have a duration of 639 years, ending in 2640. Hopefully Isolation ends before this.

I haven’t listened to it all the way through, and perhaps it would grow on one with repeated listenings, but I suspect I will still prefer his piece 4’ 33’‘.

The latter does have a Simon & Garfunkel vibe about it.

With which I think it’s time for me to pop off and meet up with my old friend.

The most recent note change occurred on October 5, 2013, and the next change will occur on September 5, 2020. If it wasn’t for this stupid virus, we could have attended.

And such a shame that Cage himself will never get to hear the piece in full.
From Sept 2016. An oldie but a goodie (from mrs m).

Also, I think this song is worth at least 1000 Prime Ministerial statements and retractions:
You don’t share Ted’s sympathies for Nakamura?
I’ve been listening to his stuff since the family spent four months staying with friends in Aboriginal school-kid share house accommodation in Alice in the 70s. Somebody bought the ‘Bangtail Muster’ album.
Here’s a morally ambiguous tale for you – I saw him perform ‘Two Little Boys’ with Rolf Harris somewhere out in the middle of nowhere – Brought the whole shed to tears.
Did you know he was the Administrator of the Northern Territory for few years?
Did you know the Paul Kelly / Kev Carmody song ‘From Little Things’ was largely a re-working of the Egan song ‘Gurindji Blues’? He beat them to it by about 40 years.

What’s the piece? Sounds like an extended piano mix of ‘Knights in White Saturn’ by The Moody Blues.

And it doesn’t go for 54 minutes.
I didn’t get the Moody Blues / Bach out of that at all.

Perhaps if you two were listening to the music, rather than raking posts for opportunities to correct other people’s spelling, you might have heard the song.

23 minutes? I’m supposed to listen for 23 minutes to hear a likeness to a moody blues song?

Maybe you misunderstood my comment.
I meant that Egan shows Scummo to be wrong^1000.
Pearl Jam were an arse-kicking, world-class rock band in the nineties, but I’m currently listening to them live from barely two years ago not nailing their own material, and making a dog’s breakfast of a couple of covers.

I listened to his album Ram when I drove up to Curve’s funeral. Hadn’t listened to it in years and enjoyed every minute of it.

It stands up to time.
