i had a guy here the other day who didn’t seem to want to leave my yard without colleting as much detail bout me as he could.. though all he had tyo do was look up the street address.

He was told unequivocably that I want to retain the insulation I have rather than put K.Rudd’s rat bedding in my ceiling butthat if he wanted to fund me to improve my existing insulation I would be happy to accept his money..

Like man.. who sends dolts out when they could have asked me in the first place?

To make that point more clear.. No one is going to put fibreglass batts in my ceiling.. on any pretext.

ok well I’d be ensuring that they suck it out with an industrial vacuum first..

But i’d still stipulate that I don’t want batts .. they are worse than they help. seriousy.. we are all being defrauded here.

What do you think is best, out of what’s on the market? Recycled newspaper that gets blown in? Wool?

————-
polystyrene, straw?…. none of the options are without problems. they all collect dust including the reflective foil – they are all lightweight and blow around..
probably a 100mm f/glass batt with reflective foil stuck to the top is best – when combined with wind driven roof ventilators.

it is hard to recommend a perfect solution but I found this much.. that shredded newspaper coated with boracic acid.. stops rodents from nesting.

Fibreglass batts are a wonderful home for rattus rattus.

I love rattus rattus.. if only you could convince them not to chew through wires :( I actually sleep better at night if I can hear the scritch scritch of rodents in the ceiling.

But yeh.. will try to stick to having domesticated ones rather than the wildies :)

My workshop up in the shed was rat proof or so I thought. I worked many a long night in there with them scratching away in the ceiling gnawing in my nuts.. er walnuts. Then I was away for a couple of weeks and I came back to find that they had bored a hole straight through the ceiling and gained entry.

i stripped the roofing iron off when i renovated here. the insulation was a combination of worn out f/glass and ordinary straw ( not ‘solomit’ straw ceilings that are treated for both fire and pests). no mice at all in the ceiling – i think the uncouth possums had driven the rats out with their perpetual toilet and coupling habits.
generally fibreglass is such a huge irritant that rodents tend not to live in it. f/glass will kill you if you install it without maximum eye, mouth and nose protection.

We’ve got batts made of recycled plastic- I’m afraid of the fibreglass ones :) This stuff can be handled with no protection.

Hey duckwoman.
I have the recycled paper with borax in my ceiling for insulation. Been there about 10 yrs.
Since then, we haven’t had any mice, rates, cockroaches or other pests in the house.
They hate it. Dunno about birds.
We still get mudwasps, but they’re good guys.
When it was first installed, i grabbed a handful and put a plumbers blow torch on it. It flared good and hot while the torch was on it. As soon as the torch was removed, it went out and was cool within seconds. So it won’t burn either. Highly recommended.
