He hated me. Bastard’ll probably find a way to come back and haunt me.
Oh. Poor Curve. It was a fucked fight in the end. Kind thoughts for all who cared. I am glad his Mum and Dad were there even though Mums and Dads shouldn’t have to go through that. :(

Yes I saw that on his Facebook page
What?
The Mighty O is gone?
Aww…shit.
This is so sad!
I heard he wasn’t well but I didn’t know it was so serious.
Hugs for everyone!
This is a dreadful shame. He fought it a long time. He will indeed be missed.
That is sad. It shouldn’t be much of a surprise given some of last week’s strange posts.
Still…
RIP

Rest in peace mate.

I found the fight distressing. But I don’t deal with death well.
And of course I had to spell Awesome wrongly in the thread title :/

I’m really going to miss him. Only met him once IRL but have always enjoyed his company here.
I used to have great fun on the old SSSF, during the time of the long knives when bannings were rife, a new member would join, I’d read about 4 or 5 posts then reply with a jaunty “g’day Curve” to get a “d’oh” in response as he realised that his cunning plan had been foiled :)
I think I’ll sink a few tonight.

It’s just coincidence but he and Stumpy loved collecting miniature cars and stuff.

This is Bendigo, where Curve was in ICU, today. I hope he got to enjoy it.

These kinds of forums are life lines for some people
I more or less walked away from forums full stop, Facebook is frequented.

He was saying that they were trying to kill him. (Hospital staff I think, not relatives, maybe arts can look into that)
I was going to suggest he ask for organ transplants.
2 new kidneys, 2 new livers grown in a lab.
It should be common routine to fix people up and sent them back on their way.
He could still be with us.
We could still be arguing with each other and he could still be saying that I’m stupid fuckwit.
Yes I will miss him.
When you see the delirious posts you know it’s real close.
I met him once at SN’s place on the coast.
He was just a bloke, fairly quiet and thoughtful, no bluff or bluster but you could almost hear him thinking.
When you are wandering around ICU you see various people propped up usually unconscious.
I was thinking of going into a theatre one day and I saw a leg stuck up covered in iodine and quickly moved on.
At least in ICU there are people walking around , there’s still a connection to life, the worse places are the rooms, silent, the odd belonging hanging around.

I often wondered why he didn’t go to uni when it was free instead of straight into the army. Maybe he was sick of schooling at the time. He was very intelligent though. Sometimes infuriatingly so.

Yeah. i liked that he often had a an angle on something that was a bit different to my way of thinking.
He didn’t want to leave, life was fun when it was good.
I remember him saying as far as he was concerned, he was still a youngster. He watched Rage, played video games, enjoyed his booze and weed, collected robots, cars and other toys.
Always had a book or two on the go, took an interest in his garden and cooking etc. Rode a little scooter.
But his bewildering variety of ailments were stacking up and he often said he knew he wasn’t long for this world.
Does anyone recall what was the origin of his lung condition? I know he had that going on for years.

Maybe the lung condition was related to his enfeebled post-crash state.

RIP Curve.
Who was it who knitted the Tom Baker Dr Who scarf for him? I think it was purple but cannot be absolutely sure.
It was used as a recognition aid, I walked into the Dunnoly pub and spotted him at the bar immediately.

he was a pain in the arse, but also a genuine pain in the arse. And loved a chat..

Pseudomonas, but, that particular bug occurs in many lung conditions.

Could’ve been bronchiectasis if he weren’t a smoker.

Yeah. It was hard for him. Having to ride a scooter up to the pub and you’re in your mid 40s, not great. I just loved his attitude, similar to Stumpy’s and Geoff’s; fuck it – I’m going to live life to the best of my ability, have the occasional whinge but spit at the universe and enjoy myself anyway.

He had a certain respect for me, and probably a bit of identification too, being another ageing bachelor who (mostly) enjoys his solitary status.
I remember him inviting me to spend a few days with him when I was considering a Vic goldfields holiday. Free board in return for my cooking :)

We all knew he was in ICU after a traumatic operation.
He was also delirious after the first operation, so there was hope amongst some that this was more of the same and he’d recover.
But it seemed pretty clear to me that he thought he was dying, and might well be right.

Jesus, you really are just a cunt. To post this in a memorial to a poster who has just died. Fuck you.
I hate people dying, I know it natural and so on, but it seems a waste to fill people up with so much information then suddenly they are gone.
Its about time hospitals had the capacity and technology to regrow all organs for people
So people can leave the hospital cheerful instead of sending them away dead.
Send then home for twenty more years
Awesome would say it cant be done. I believe it can be done and more.
There was nothing people could do
He knew he was going, hence the last few posts where he stated his name and number to let people know who he was to set the record straight.

Of course he knew he was going, he was just looking for a little support from his so called friends here that was very largely denied him. Why do you think I was compelled to comfort him, he was not my friend, just a person about to die and very afraid.

It’s the gap between being human and able to value our capacities, and the fact that we’re not actually in control of our destiny. The “universe” doesn’t care, it doesn’t have a human brain.
If we’re going to create a world that values us in line with our highest ideals, we’ll have to do it ourselves. And we’re a long way from that goal, if we can ever achieve it.

Nobody here had any reason to believe his life was in danger. He was clearly delirious. The several phone calls to the hospital sounded serious but hopeful. I don’t think anybody here could have done anything more to support him.

I felt horrible I couldn’t do anything. Its sad to see people pass away, when organ replacement is what they need.
Organs grown in a lab or organ donors, not taken from people like they do in China.
Not everybody has to assist.
But if I had have chosen to assist I would have sent two new lungs. two new kidneys and a few joints.

He was in an intensive care unit. There is literally no higher level of support a human life can have.
Do you find you often end up in fights at funerals, PF? I know that’s a thing some blokes do: manufacture conflict because it helps them feel bad. I’m asking because I think it’s pretty obvious that, were this a real funeral, your nose would have been well and truly smashed by now. Is this how you cope with feeling sad?

Even though Curve had said it was Aeromonas, as poik said later in the thread, it may have been Pseudomonas. (Curve sometimes got technical terms muddled with similar sounding terms.)

Respiratory infection
Aeromonas species have also been associated with pneumonia after near-drowning events, especially in fresh water. Most commonly this has been reported with A. hydrophila, though the ability of clinical laboratories to correctly identify species of Aeromonas has been limited. Aeromonas pneumonia due to episodes of near-drowning are frequently complicated by bacteremia and death.
He reckoned it was some sort of “greeble” that had got into his lungs. It wasn’t directly curable by anything from what I remember. The bacteria had some sort if protective shell around it that made it hard to treat. By the sounds of it he must have had it for at least 20 years.
I questioned him over it at the time perhaps a few years ago and spitballed some solutions.

I think you miss the point. He was extremely frightened about dying and needed his friends to help him at this time of need. Even if he was unconscious and had an entire football club sitting around his bed when he actually died, they would have been of no comfort to him.

Everyone must pass through this. We were enlightened by having shared these moments, though most of us didin’t view his comments while he was making them. He was telling us his name and who to contact and all of that and then asking why is no one responding. All while most of us were asleep. It is a pity nobody was here when he asked for our help. He did ask “where are you, why don’t you respond”? I do wish I’d been there but when I read those posts it was hours after they were posted.

yeah. I’ve been at others death beds.
As I have tried to get across before…I am feeling a bit distressed by Curve’s vigil. I’m not sure that accusations and incriminations are making me pick up. I don’t like deaths. My mother blamed me for years for being the reason she was not with my father when he died. I don’t like funerals. And I really don’t like shit fights after someone has died. It sort of takes me back to when my mother hit my pregnant sister in the stomach the day my father was buried. So if it is okay with everybody can we do a bit of saying nice stuff to one another while there is still time?

It sort of takes me back to when my mother hit my pregnant sister in the stomach the day my father was buried. So if it is okay with everybody can we do a bit of saying nice stuff to one another while there is still time?
Yeah.
Curve was in a lot of distress. The hospital knew that (I called them) and they were themselves probably feeling inadequate in regard to settling him.
For the most part he wasn’t responding rationally to our posts so we just had to hope that some of the more reassuring comments struck a chord.
I’m pretty sure if he could now look back on that night he wouldn’t feel hard done by :)

Well I get tired of people who ignored his plight and walked away, only to reappear after his death to pretend to be his good friend and how they tried to help.

That has nothing to do with it. I was disgusted by the callous disregard of many who casually walked away. It is probably more reliant that I did try to help, just for a suffering individual and hope I would do the same for anyone else in his position.

Mark’s funeral will be held in Dunolly Victoria at 2.30pm 4th of June. It will be a burial, run by the local RSL. (I have permission to post this information here)
travel bans are still in place for many,
I would suggest that if you want to pay your respects that you do it through making a donation to the RSL there or through a support foundation for either kidney disease or research, or even other support services for those who serve the country.

Ha, just noticed this on his facebook page. It’s exactly the barstool he was sitting on and the scarf he was wearing on the one time I met him IRL. I managed to drink the bar out of Abbotsford Invalid Stout that night :)

A thing I learnt which surprised me quite a bit was that Curve started out his military career as a cook and it wasn’t until he had his accident that he moved into clerical roles.
A thing I learnt which didn’t surprise me was that he was considered the font of knowledge and arbitrator of arguments down at the Royal Hotel in Dunnoly.

He was late to his own funeral! The hearse turned up at around 3 :)It was a nice service with about 35 people in attendance. I got roped in as a pallbearer and I also got up and said a few words on behalf of the forum Jeez, I’m a tops bloke.

Good job Sibeen. I hope his parents are coping.

I was just thinking about Curve while making the gravy. He was much against added corn flour :)
For DO to see.
I know I’m very late to the party but I just heard of Curve’s passing.. Very sad news indeed. He was a truly interesting and different character and really brought spice and colour to the forum for many years. His cheeky wit and different ways of looking at the world will be missed.
RIP mate …
I’m going to add in something here that may surprise a few people, as it certainly surprised me when I learnt it at his funeral.
Everyone at his funeral talked about just how damn smart he was. He was considered the fount of knowledge at the Royal Hotel in Dunolly for instance. The thing that came out, and surprised me, was that he started his career in the army as a cook. Apparently he was a master ice sculptor and would be called upon to do up a presentation for all the big functions. It was only after he had a bike accident that he moved across to the admin side. Something he never mentioned in all his times on the forums that I saw.
I knew he’d been a cook but I did not know about the ice sculpting.

Well I obviously wasn’t paying attention that day in class. Or I may have been sick.
