I have never endeared to the term mateship and Little Johnny didn’t help me with it.. I let it go through to the keeper.
Australia is basically a corrupt nation with a lot of backslapping holding the place up. If you can’t afford to slap backs and grease palms.. you are nowhere in this vast land.Taking the beer can out of the distance of driving calculation has caused many a driver to get lost and stop at a RBT to ask directions.

- what makes an australian garden?
i have got muntries, quandongs and lemon myrtle growing but they are not growing to feed me.
altho’ the british are the world’s best gardeners it’s the greeks and italians that have taught us how to grow the veges and eat them….. and now the vietnamese are taking over where the naturalised wogs (oops) have left off.
multiculturalism is the key to gardening as well as living in a peaceful nation.

An Australian garden has the identity of the local area as well as the adaptation of the gardener.

While I agree with your comment, especially the latter comment, I would like to offer the name “Peter Yama” as defence to the level of corruption in Australia or Austrailia as it is now spelt. PNG corruption is world class and Peter would easily be in the running for a gold medal at the Corruption Olympics, nothing transparent about this guy.
Well, I’ll see your “corrupt Austrailia” and I’ll raise you a racist Austrailia. Every week now, a Pollie or a leader has to get on the teev and defend this nation by saying “we’re not racist, its just a minority”. I don’t know? Austrailia has always been very restrictive in its migrant intake, it has always developed enclaves of ethnic communities and its treatment of its indigenous people is pretty woeful.
While I ain’t saying that anyone here is a racist, I personally have seen some form of racism on a regular basis just in the world I live in, from the names we have for those who we once fought in World Wars to the Asian countries that make up a large percentage of our electrical goods to the Europeans who have taught us to grow vegies at home, yet they get painted with a pretty stained brush.
And what relief there was this morning from the media when it was discovered that the latest attack on two Indian lads last night was by “Asian Looking” hoodlums…
But by and by, I do not think this behaviour is unique to us. As an example, the PNGeans are racist amongst their own people, Coastal Motuans don’t have many nice things to say about Highland Niuginians and the feeling is mutual.
boy there some grouchy people here. If Australia is as bad as rb thinks why stay?
We left Europe in 1954 and haven’t looked back and would never consider going back to such a regimented and overpopulated place.
This country will do me thanks because of the hard work from my parents and me over the years we have what so many want but without the effort. Its easy to get on a gravy train but the gravy runs out when the taxpayers stop paying taxes.
Shame on the negative people and good onya Lucky Thee and the cheery ones here who keep smiling even tho they have reason to be sad.

Everyone has different ideas and call them facts I know I haven’t found this country corrupt unlike a lot of other countries including near neighbours that require bribes to accomplish things. Maybe I look at things differently than most but I worked to make do with what I now have and simple it may be but I’m happy with that. I have a block of land a nice tho small house and a garden to grow food and flowers plus a few friends that I can visit. What more is needed? some really good friends

Sorry but while simple I dont miss much at all maybe look for the posatives and you will become happy tho I doubt it as it seems your mindset is fixed. So as to avoid any further downward spiraling moods As to the comment of little johnny I see where it all stems from.
I now call it quits and wont discuss it further as I refuse to bring myself down into depression over it

U dont want to be my friend ….:(
Not at all, I ain’t painting myself with the brush that it flopped all over the rednecks here in town. I’m happy being everyone’s friend, but some people don’t like it when I say G’day to them when I am out and about. Here’s a story…
The other day, I’m riding my MTB out west, I’m on the Flinder’s Highway heading towards Charlie’s Trousers and I am a fair way out of town, I’m dodging roadkill and have already once been tailed by a Black Kite. The Road Trains are 50metres long and carry three trailers and they are bombing along, moving all sorts of air. It’s hot, it’s humid and I’m solo.
Up ahead, there’s this guy riding his roadie towards me, I’m smashing against a wind and going up a slight hill… he’s doing it sweet, downhill and with the wind in his back. I’ve got my rock and or roll blasting on my ipod and there’s a gap between tracks… right at the moment we pass each other. I raise my hand and say “Good Morning”.
The old guy on the other bike does nothing.
I wish him a flat tyre.
How hard is it to say “G’day”?

This is how I see an Australian….. be he black, white, yellow or pink with purple spots.
The person smiles and thinks of his/ her glass half full not half empty.
He/she will stop and help a person who is in need of help.
He/she always has hope for the future and for those who feel they have none….try and reach out to the person who feels this despair. .
He/she treats the person, how He/she wants to be treated himself/herself.
He/she is a volunteers in the community if possible and helps the needy.
He/she is kind to their fellow human.
He/she always has hope, thanks the people who gave their lives so that we can live in this free country. Where we are not rounded up for saying the wrong thing and not seen again for years.
I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else:)

I feel that communities are rather strong in Australia generally but that we were always isolated and our supermarket society is moving more towards insular lifestyles.

That’s tame. We have developed a compensation society where blame is King. So why should we reach out and help someone? No-one wants to be appropriated. Our children are existing on such a bubble environment what with wii, pcs, txt, wifi its all so easy for their cocoon existence to be rendered in adobe concrete.
Delicacy is no longer reserved for Oysters.

i’m getting worried for the poms.
The BBC has made three tv programmes about living (for free) off the english countryside. the beachcombers cottage is this chef guy who hired a guru to plant his vege patch and then bought chickens, pigs and goats that destroyed his vege patch while he was out fishing and racing the local hoons. he then kills all his animals and has a million dollar party for all his friends.
there’s this ludricous survival programme where an adventurer jumps onto volcanoes and burns his shoes – (surprise surprise) and finally there is one that i have renamed ‘the killers in the tent’. these supposedly poor gypsies (living in a tent) produce guns of all sorts to shoot up a few rabbits and ducks. then they wonder into the world’s best walled herb garden to pick a few flavourings for their meat.
i think the poms have become so citified that they will believe any old nonsense because they have this national dream that life was better in medieval times. anyrate that’s my theory.

fair ‘nuff, but the Aussie “food taster” (wtf is a food taster and why do I care) ha snow moved to Taswegia and embarked on the same bollocks…. so far is patch has produced limp spinach while he has purchased toms, pigs and fish. fwit.
Maybe we have all lost the plot here of the Thread Title, to be politically correct as long as your born here your an Australian, your parents dont have to be a citizen at all , they can become citizens after a certain amounts of living here , some Australians do not deserve the title . So I ask you all again, ‘what makes an Australian as Lucky asked this morning ??
I think ‘god’ or our parents if your not religious , made us all equal when born into this earth, born without clothes, money and without assets or privilege, we make out way though life and it is up to every individual to make their own pathway or how they want their life to be and or can expect it to be.
It is all up to each of us of how we conduct ourselves, so if we take care of our mates/neighbours/friends , invite them ouround for a meal/BBQ/or morning tea after church, we offer then hand me downs/excess food we have grown/ a shoulder to cry on, does that make us an Australian, NO it makes us a nice person. Her in the great land of Oz we have many great Australians, however his name may not be Bill Smith, or Bob Brown, his name maybe be Tran Nguyen or Huyen Ngo ?? or a lot of others cant spell or pronouce.
Hey PM yeps I have had some small bevvies LOL

i caught a glimpse of that one – same thing.
all you have to do is wonder into a remote village somewhere with a camera crew attached. tell em you are good for tourism and therefore every abbatoir, fishing boat, vege grower, oyster farm and pig grower in the district should support your efforts. throw a big party at the end – blow the budget and go home to a rich life in the city.

I have read all that was written and said with interest.
Very interesting and thought provoking thread Lucky. I would have pretty much agreed with the above comments until I read TheE’s comment that No, that just makes you a nice person. Good point.
I must disagree with RB’s comment that you have to be born on Australian soil to be Australian. I wasn’t (came here when I was 4yo), and my gosh did I discover how patriotic I was when I was on an American dominated forum and was told that my opinion didn’t count because I was ‘only an Australian’ and we were this, that and the other (among the stupidity was this gem – that we were backwards because we had no guns, and to defend their point of view, they tried to say that the Port Arthur Massacre wouldn’t have happened if we all carried guns to defend ourselves. :O Anyway I won’t go into any more of the madness that ensued) Up until that moment I’d still thought of myself as not quite Australian. With steam coming out of my ears, I let rip. It was then that I decided it was time to become a citizen. Haven’t yet (in true Aussie fashion, I haven’t got around to it yet), but my heart is Australian, and the rest is just paperwork.
I think what makes an Australian, or an Austrailian as the case may be LOL, is to be proud of this country, its people and its culture (or cultural diversity) and to love it, unconditionally, faults and all. Being a nice person, a good person, and helping others etc, well that’s just the icing on the cake.
Now here’s a searingly patriotic song to rival the Americans’ beloved Star Spangled Banner. Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, something our current rather stiff anthem fails to do.
WE ARE AUSTRALIAN
Bruce Woodley and Dobe Newton
I came from the dreamtime from the dusty red soil plains
I am the ancient heart, the keeper of the flame
I stood upon the rocky shore
I watched the tall ships come
For forty thousand years I’d been the first Australian.
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian.
I came upon the prison ship bowed down by iron chains.
I cleared the land, endured the lash and waited for the rains.
I’m a settler.
I’m a farmer’s wife on a dry and barren run
A convict then a free man I became Australian.
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian.
I’m the daughter of a digger who sought the mother lode
The girl became a woman on the long and dusty road
I’m a child of the depression
I saw the good times come
I’m a bushy, I’m a battler
I am Australian
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian.
I’m a teller of stories
I’m a singer of songs
I am Albert Namatjira
I paint the ghostly gums
I am Clancy on his horse
I’m Ned Kelly on the run
I’m the one who waltzed Matilda
I am Australian
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian.
I’m the hot wind from the desert
I’m the black soil of the plains
I’m the mountains and the valleys
I’m the drought and flooding rains
I am the rock, I am the sky
The rivers when they run
The spirit of this great land
I am Australian
(chorus)
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian
I am, you are, we are Australian.

Thanks Horty. I’d heard bits and parts of this sung but hadn’t seen the lyrics in whole :)
And yes , those who come to this land and learn to love and defend it , are Australians :D
With your love and knowledge of the native flora, your’re more Aussie than I am, and I was born here!

can’t talk to the Americans about guns. It is their constitutional right to bear arms so they can defend themselves against a government gone wrong. It is so ingrained into their psyche they cannot understand that our governing system has a failsafe (under a monarchy, no matter what you think of that.) If we become a republic then that would be another matter. The Americans have born arms since the Mayflower and don’t know life without them.

I love that song and I reckon it should be the National Anthem. Thanks for putting all the words up Horty :)
I wasn’t born here, but Australia feels like home to me far more than my birthplace. This is a wonderful country and has been very good to me and my family.
Freedom of speech and cultural diversity are two of the best points. We have no class distinction and that is a very strong plus.
I just have always felt that in Australia all things are possible and every individual is master of his/her own destiny.
Australians in general are friendly no-nonsense people, salt of the Earth. Generous and hospitable and caring. Of course that is a generalisation and you do get the other kind LOL!

I like it o40. It’s just a shame that we seem to be getting more of the “other” kind as the population grows.

ok
well it might get all twisted on the way out but I’ll give it a go..I think the original said “what makes an Australian?” and was replied.. a mother and a father.. well
a mother and a father may be in either or both norway and newYork.. and still make a child.. but does that make the child an Australian? I think not.So I replied with a mother and a father on australian soil which by law makes their child an Australian no matter what the parents nationality.
You just didn’t read it that way.

Ah, ok, you took Pom’s quip literally and ran with it, then I took your comment literally and ran with it…LOL!
You didn’t mean exclusively, my mistake. :)
Poor Pom, I think she simply meant that it couldn’t be defined, LOL!
What makes an Australian?
Being able to have an intellectual conversation with someone that sounds like he has never been to school. getting the joke.. when someone says.. “hey they look like lucky legs”.. when yo appear wearing shorts.. “lucky they don’t snap orf and shove up your ars”.Prove capable of the above, you will immediately be accepted as an Australian then be prompted to get on with the very real task of emptying this keg of ale.
>then be prompted to get on with the very real task of emptying this keg of ale.
Amen.
