‘Enigmatic’ footprints reveal prehistoric crocodile that walked on two legs

Ancient footprints embedded in rock in South Korea likely belonged to a prehistoric crocodile that walked on two legs, paleontologists said.

It’s the first time this gait has been found in this family of ancient crocs, which typically walked on four legs like modern-day crocodiles and alligators. The well-preserved tracks included footprints that were 18 centimeters (7 inches) to 24 centimeters (9 inches) in length, indicating a body length of up to 3 meters (10 feet.)

It’s only fair, if we’re going to get all pseudophyletic over miners, bats, rays and cnidarians, to ask whether they mean “crocodile that walked on just two legs” or “crocodile that walked on only two legs” or “crocodile that walked on exactly two legs” or some such.

Pretty sure they mean two legs precisely.

We’ve known for yonks that some ancient crocs walked on two legs. It’s even possible, though perhaps not likely, that the common ancestor of all crocs walked on two legs. More likely the first croc ran on two legs and walked on four, like the first dinosaurs.

But I haven’t heard of this in South Korea before.
