Get-up tell me:

BREAKING: the Australian Federal Police are pushing for criminal charges against ABC journalist Dan Oakes who exposed war crimes committed by Australian special forces.1

Closed secret trials. Raids on journalists. Whistleblowers and lawyers facing prison time.2,3

And Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton wants to go even further – passing a new law that would see people tracked without warrants, lawyers kicked out of interrogations and children as young as 14 hauled before ASIO for questioning.4 We need to fight back.

If enough of us chip in, we can get a team of the best barristers digging into Dutton’s Law and whether it can be challenged on constitutional grounds.

But we need to act fast. A public hearing on Dutton’s Law is just a week away and we need to expose the threats it presents to a free and fearless press and our own civil liberties.”

So is this as bad as it sounds.

How can “Liberals” support this sort of thing?

I don’t know.

I don’t know.

The only ‘big government’ they approve of is the surveillance state.

Press freedom does not mean that journalists are above the law or should have special privileges not enjoyed by Joe citizen.
I don’t know much about the case and I believe the Attorney will decide if the case has merit and should go to trial.
If the person involved and Getup believe he is innocent then they should welcome the chance to have that tested in a court of law.

That’s exactly what the Guardian article said.

The Getup message was talking about changes to the law, not cases currently being prosecuted.

It is in the public interest for unlawful or criminal behaviour by government agencies to published.

Any case being tested in a court of law should be done publicly in an open court.

The getup message mentioned one case in particular, I was commenting on that.

Broadly I am opposed to the declining protections of whistle-blowers and journalists in Australia. I don’t know enough about this specific case to comment.

You’re getting two completely unrelated topics mixed up here.

1. Australian Federal Police are pushing for criminal charges against ABC journalist Dan Oakes who exposed war crimes committed by Australian special forces

Bad. Really bad.

2. A new law that would see people tracked without warrants, lawyers kicked out of interrogations and children as young as 14 hauled before ASIO for questioning.

It’s called anti-terrorism. I’m OK with that.

I. I’m just repeating what Get-up sent me.

2. It is nonsense to suggest that these topics are unrelated, and that there is clearly no problem with the latter.
