Skydio X2 can autonomously build 3D point-maps of complex objects

Skydio is leveraging the power of what it calls “the most advanced AI device ever shipped” to make its enterprise-grade X2 drone a nigh-on uncrashable machine with some pretty amazing autonomous 3D point-mapping capabilities.

In terms of aerial inspection tasks, the X2 has some pretty extraordinary capabilities. Draw a box around a house, a bridge or any other object to be scanned, and it’ll autonomously fly around it, building and refining a 3D point scan of the structure as it deftly dodges obstacles and flies through tight gaps to get itself the view it needs. Interestingly, a lot of this stuff can be done by the Skydio 2 as well, as shown in the video below.

Good. I’ve wanted to do that for a long time. Even suggested it as a project for ESA, though I was thinking of a lunar rover rather than a drone.

I hope the point map is full colour. It can be and should be.

Anafi USA enterprise drone flies 32x zoom 4K video and thermal cameras

Parrot has launched a rugged drone for first responders, firefighters, search-and-rescue operatives, security agencies and survey/inspection workers. The Anafi USA features a 32x zoom 4K HDR camera and FLIR thermal camera, can fly for up to 32 minutes per charge and has a top speed of 32.88 mph.

It’s a good start but could do better. It gets its 3-D information from taking 1 frame per second.

It could get its 3-D information from 25 frames per second in continuous flight.
