Subject: Unrestored 109-year-old motorcycle sets auction record at $225,000 – still looks brand new

This 1911 Pierce Arrow 696cc four-cylinder is now the most expensive Pierce motorcycle to sell at auction. Despite a shine that suggests new paint, this bike retains the original paint with which it left the showroom 109 years ago.

The most expensive vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycle ever to sell at auction: $715,000 | 1907 Harley-Davidson “Strap Tank” Single | Mecum Auctions| 21 March 2015

The most expensive Vincent ever to sell at auction: $929,000 | 1951 Vincent Black Lightning Series-C | Bonhams | 25 January 2018

If it had been a 1952 Vincent Black Lightning it would have been worth it.

One of my early memories of being on a solo bike was a young kid’s “tank-ride” on one of my father’s friends’ Black Shadow.

Believe it or not, I’ve never listed to the words of that song before:

Richard Thompson – 1952 Vincent Black Lightning

Oh, says Red Molly to James, “That’s a fine motorbike
A girl could feel special on any such like”
Says James to Red Molly, “My hat’s off to you
It’s a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952”

And I’ve seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme
And he pulled her on behind
And down to Box Hill, they did ride

Oh, says James to Red Molly, “Here’s a ring for your right hand
But I’ll tell you in earnest I’m a dangerous man
For I’ve fought with the law since I was seventeen
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine

Now I’m twenty-one years, I might make twenty-two
And I don’t mind dying, but for the love of you
And if fate should break my stride
Then I’ll give you my Vincent to ride”

“Come down, come down, Red Molly, “ called Sergeant McRae
“For they’ve taken young James Adie for armed robbery
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside
Oh, come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside”

When she came to the hospital, there wasn’t much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
And said I’ll give you my Vincent to ride

Says James, “In my opinion, there’s nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves’s won’t do
Ahh, they don’t have a soul like a Vincent 52”

Oh, he reached for her hand then he slipped her the keys
He said, “I’ve got no further use for these
I see angels on Ariels, in leather and chrome
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home”

And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride

Rumor and Sigh is the sixth solo album by British singer/songwriter Richard Thompson, released in 1991.

Ta.

The Series C Vincents were designed by an Australian motorcycle engineer, Phil Irving. They were very expensive motorcycles. They went out of business in 1955, despite being the fastest road-registerable motorcycles in the world (Black Shadow model – 54 hp, introduced in 1948 – 200+ km/h). That wasn’t exceeded until 1973, when Kawasaki introduced it’s 900cc, 90 hp Z1 model, 25 years later.

The Black Lightning was a race-only model, without lights and mufflers. It was capable of 240 km/h in standard trim. The last of these bikes was made in 1952.

1991 was my uni honours year – not much else other than mapping, reading, research and writing happened.

I pay attention to my wife, rocks and motorbikes.

If music isn’t played on JJJ, then I miss it. These days, I hardly ever listen to radio, either. JJJ has become somewhat monotonous and boring.
