Premiers and chief ministers are being urged to reject an elimination strategy for the coronavirus, which the Prime Minister said was “very risky” because it encouraged complacency but could still result in outbreaks, as with the hotel quarantine in Melbourne.

I reckon the biggest effect from mask wearing has nothing much to do with breathing and lots to do with touching of hard surfaces with viruses sitting on them and then touching nose/mouth. If you’ve got a mask on, that transfer is hindered a lot.

The KN95 respirators are good. They are the Chinese equivalent of the N95 American Standard which has been widely talked about and recommended. The equivalent Australian Standard is called a P2. All good for virus protection.
The disposable face masks are not that great since they do not fit to the face, but better than nothing.

The mollwollfumble designed face mask has all the features of the N95/P2 mask (eg. tight fitting, and does seal on breathing in) with two exceptions. Not approved to safety standard, and machine washable instead of disposable.
The mollwollfumble designed mask also has the twin advantages of being comfortable to wear, and providing minimal back pressure when breathing in. The N95/P2 mask does not have minimal back pressure on breathing in, I don’t know how comfortable to wear.
One extra thing – shave before donning mask. Facial hair makes performance much worse.

So you really think that the covid risk from singing in church is the same as the covid risk from a test tube eating contest in a covid testing facility? Huh?
I have sung in church after covid started. Everybody is facing the same way. Nobody is coughing or sneezing.
The church I was singing at had social distancing in place and I was wearing a mask, but that’s beside the point. It was quite safe without that.

From the link I posted:
Choir: The community choir in Washington State. Even though people were aware of the virus and took steps to minimize transfer; e.g. they avoided the usual handshakes and hugs hello, people also brought their own music to avoid sharing, and socially distanced themselves during practice. They even went to the lengths to tell choir members prior to practice that anyone experiencing symptoms should stay home. A single asymptomatic carrier infected most of the people in attendance. The choir sang for 2 1/2 hours, inside an enclosed rehearsal hall which was roughly the size of a volleyball court.

I love satire – the fine art of mocking those who need mocking in a manner that requires talent and wit.
However, I am starting to be unimpressed with the mocking of Trump. There’s no talent needed, no art in it, and no skill.
It feels like it’s “Punching down” and despite the fact the subject is the leader of the free world, anyone can do it successfully and it dilutes the artform.
Trump has ruined a complete artform.

Was that satire?
No.
See what I mean?

I wouldn’t be surprised if GWB’s is actually over 100. He wasn’t the sharpest but he seemed about “average Joe”.
Trump has the maths ability, written language ability, speaking patterns, and ability to process information that you’d expect of maybe a ten year old, and not a bright one, so his IQ would be in the low nineties.

Pre Election Trumps IQ was around 120 and higher up to 153 ?
I think it was Trumps publicity machine that came up with those figures
snopes has his IQ at 73 which sounds about right.

The IQ of U.S. President Donald Trump has been a subject of speculation since the early days of the 2016 presidential election cycle. During that campaign, for example, we investigated a false rumor that Trump had the second highest IQ (156) of all presidents in U.S. history. In May 2019, we encountered a rumor claiming the opposite: that Trump’s IQ was a lowly 73 (placing him in the “well below average” classification).

IQ tests are strange things. I whizzed though mine in a sixth of the time allocated to me but it seemed to me rather general knowledge stuff if one had done any reading.
Mostly I’d say that if one listened and read and watched information, IQ would jump by large percentiles.
Trump is obviously not doing any of this and he sacks anyone who does.

Thing is, they aren’t all puzzles of geometry.
I have done 4 IQ tests in my life – all part of school/education. From memory, of the couple I got results for, one had me around the 115 mark and the other had me a bit above 120. I got picked on because of them and haven’t done one since.

True, some IQ tests come in different forms, creativity, problem solving, finding opportunities are difficult to discover in IQ tests.
One can still discover useful information, so are useful in other ways.

I did a couple in high school, and one as part of my apprenticeship application. With the apprenticeship one, I finished it (and the associated mechanical aptitude test comprising of diagrams of gears and levers) and looked around and noticed the rest of the class was not even a quarter of the way through. So I went back through to see what I missed. Then again to check all my answers. Then again to make sure the answers I gave were the ones expected. By then the other kids were finishing.
I never got the results for that one, but I got the job :)

That’s what happened to me. Five minutes after we starrted, I was fidgeting at my seat and the supervisor quizzed me what was wrong and I said I seem to have finished and I’ve checked three times but still don’t know why you are asking me this shit. She allowed me to leave the room.

Streaming was quite minimal in my school. There was some in high school, but only in year 9 and 10. First year (Year 8) everyone was just lumped in together, based on results from that year we were streamed in year 9 and 10. Year 11 and 12 you chose your own subjects.
They did that scaling test thing if you did TEE…
Yes, I did the scaling test. But I don’t think that counts as an IQ test.

I’m curious about whether he will, as he’s mentioned, pardon himself.
Of course there’s still a decent chance he’ll win.

No, i managed to dodge all of the lumpy bits. God looks after fools and drunks, they say, so i was doubly safe there.
On a chartwork exercise, we were to plot out a complicated course off eastern Australia according various directions, speeds etc.
When asked what my final position was, i had to admit that i was some several nautical miles west of Shepparton.

I imagined streaming was finished many years ago. I went to a suburban High School in Victoria in the 1970s (1972-77). There were about 1000 students at the school when I was there. There just wasn’t any streaming at all. The teachers were well aware of who was brighter, but I think the philosophy was to mimic real life where you had to mix with everyone. Or something.

They actually gave us a spelling and dictation test because as they said, we hadn’t done one since sixth class. Strangely enough, I topped all of fifth form at my school, 1969.
Again it is probably because I was still reading books while others were feeling each other’s body parts.

Do you interpret this as complimentary? “The Mad Monk” has spent four years skilfully slipping, ducking, sticking and moving away from serious engagement and interviews, preferring instead to let his adversaries gas themselves out.
Or this? “When pinned in a corner on an issue such as the Gonski reforms, he’s willing to pull a Bernard Hopkins and tie his opponent up in an inseparable clinch.”

What the fuck has that to do with his boxing?
This “But boxing isn’t only about skills – they say “styles make fights” and Abbott’s style was to throw everything and the kitchen sink at his opponent. It worked – he won all of his four bouts, none of which made it past the second round.”
Is this a good boxer?
Have to side slightly with sibeen here. The article strongly suggested that Tony was full-on aggressive but sadly lacking in any defensive prowess.
Anyway I’ll leave you to slog it out and get back to space puppets :)

Who gives a fuck whether he was a good boxer?
Christ, I was very fucking average which is why I gave up after a couple of amateur fights, but I still did my time in the ring and it shits me when people have a go and have never done the same.
“A bigger area of concern is his footwork. In the above photo you can see that Abbott has switched out of the southpaw stance and is leading with his left foot while throwing a right hand, which goes against a boxer’s most basic training.”

It will interest me relentlessly that I can read a couple of first-person accounts of an event, form a conclusion that sits comfortably with my general impression, and maintain that opinion until otherwise informed. It will further continue to fascinate me that a cognoscente person could form any opinion other than that Tony Abbott is a prick of bloke.

The paper’s readership is generally on the mainstream left of British political opinion, and its reputation as a platform for social liberal and left-wing editorial has led to the use of the “Guardian reader” and “Guardianista” as often-pejorative epithets for those of left-leaning or “politically correct” tendencies.

It is playing upon the theme that Melbourne is the coffee capital of the universe and therefore no real Victorian would be caught dead drinking IR.

Bring back Barack Obama!
The woman in Bunnings was right: the 1948 Universal Declaration Of Human Rights does have a clause about the right not to wear a mask at discount hardware chains
A woman who refused to wear a mask in a Bunnings store because it contravened the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights has been proven correct.
Analysis has found that the right not to wear a mask at discount hardware chains is outlined in the famous United Nations document, just below the right not to be held in slavery and the right not to be tortured.
Article 6 states that “No-one shall be forced to wear a mask upon entering a discount hardware store, particularly living women, who have the right to do what they want”.
Investigations by human rights experts also found that Article 5 provides for the right of all humans to enjoy everyday low prices. “Everyone has the right to everyday low prices, which shall be considered just the beginning. If a person finds a better price, they shall be entitled to demand that the price be beaten by 10%”.
There is no explicit mention of the right to onion with a sausage and bread, although experts say this is implied.

relatively mild examples
“One of the reasons we’re not encouraging people to use them is because they may actually be giving people a false sense of security.”While some people wear face masks in a bid to reduce the number of times they touch their nose and mouth (therefore reducing their risk of infection), Dr Seale said it can also have the opposite effect.

It frustrates me considerably that we consistently fall to our last line of defense (PPE) in the heirarchy of risk control. We should never have got anywhere near the stage of needing masks.

wearing a mask is an easy and cheap way of reminding everyone that there is a virus out there.. if the wearing of one does nothing more than remind people to physically distance, employ hygiene controls like washing of hands and not to touch every fucking public pole and handrail out there, then I am very ok with the enforcement of mask wearing.

PPE is the last line of defense because it’s the least effective.
In a modern safety systen, if you have needed PPE to protect you, you really should be filling our a ‘near-miss’ report and looking for safer ways to perform the task.
Using it alone is indefensible as a public safety strategy. Indeed, it’s not a strategy – it’s a capitulation.

I would suggest everyone knows what it is because employers find it cheaper to provide PPE (or make employees buy there own) than to invest in safe work procedures. You only need to look at countries where there’s no governance over workplace safety to see exactly what concern most employers have for employee safety – If they’re not forced into it, it doesn’t exist. I have worked in many such workplaces, I carry scars from a few.
I’ve no need to imagine firefighters without PPE – It’s what most of them do unless the Crew Leader’s a stickler for the rules. Even then they avoid aspects of it.
Americans are increasingly adopting the use of cloth face masks to slow the spread of COVID-19, and the latest science may convince even more to do so.
In an editorial published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), CDC reviewed the latest science and affirms that cloth face coverings are a critical tool in the fight against COVID-19 that could reduce the spread of the disease, particularly when used universally within communities.

like we might expect people serving our food to have their hair netted and if they’re handling salad into a sandwich maybe to wear gloves, but if the gloves actually kept the slime off their hands then we should be investigating them hard

Yeah OK. Well we’ve been having wildly different conversations, somehow.
Human communication is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?

(Pinched from the Internets – unknown origin)
Before we get too hung up on blaming the state govt, or the federal govt, or China for our covid situation let’s review some facts :
1. We had to bring in mandatory quarantining in hotels, because we couldn’t trust people to stay home after returning from overseas.
2. We then had to bring in security, because we couldn’t trust people to stay in those hotels.
3. We then had to bring in ADF, because we couldn’t trust the security guards not to have sex with those in quarantine in the hotels.
4. We had to get police to door knock and check up on people, because we couldn’t trust those who were meant to be self-isolating to actually stay at home.
5. We also have to have police and ADF reinforce the metropolitan Melbourne zone and state borders, because we can’t trust people to follow the restrictions.
6. We are now being asked to use masks, because we cannot trust people to social distance when they are in public.
7. Through it all, our supermarkets have had to introduce shopping restrictions because we couldn’t trust people to not to take more than what they needed.
So we can get as mad as we want at politicians or health officials for imposing restrictions, or the country where the virus originated, but essentially it’s our own fault that we find ourselves here.
Selfishness and lack of empathy seems to be as much of a disease as covid itself.
The quicker people start following directions, the quicker this situation will improve.

Cabin in the woods
Quite a good film once it gets going
Just saw this old Douglas Adams quote, and thought it fitted the current times rather well:
For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.

That was always one of his best.
Similar to one from somewhere out there that says, Reason for intelligent life existing elsewhere in the universe = that’s why they avoid contact with us.

You are in agreement with Mr Adams then.
He’s saying it is because they didn’t invent the wheel, New York, wars, etc.

Yes, wasn’t bad. The repetition and delay in getting to the point were annoying, but that seems to be a required feature of SBS docos. The underlying point that engineers* should pay more attention to avoiding events of low probability but high negative consequences is still very valid.

Give him time….
I’m pissed off because he extended the Indue scheme without the reporting that was supposed to happen years ago, and gave those people the stimulus…100% on the card. Some Australians are worthy and some not very worthy in this Australia.
Families of kangaroos killed in the bushfires are unhappy he didn’t do more praying during the fire.

It’s all been sort of civil and non partisan. But politics is back on.
Yeah, I saw Frying Burgers was back on the political bandwagon today – the fuckwit. I just wish that both sides would keep the politics out of it until this is well past, and even then give people some respect for what they have tried to achieve.

I grew up in Wagga. We moved to Sydney when I was eleven. The blue-ringed octopus was talked about and I used to spend a fair bit of time in marine rock pools – natural as well as man-made. But cone snails were never mentioned.

I collected live Blue Ringed Octopuses for Dr Struan Sutherland who developed the antivenom for it and many other venomous Australian critters. They are quite inoffensive and only become dangerous when seriously interfered with, then the blue rings dramatically intensify in colour.

Well I grew up in Griffith and I knew about cone snails but didn’t know about the blue ringed octopus until someone stepped on one and it made the news.
Stone fish didn’t make the news that I recall but lots of people from Griffith moved to Bermagui and they told me all about it.

Rupert.
also he has obtained so much federal funding that I can’t help but think he is printing to an agenda set in Canberra.

Lifting the restrictions way too soon. Victoria has suffered the consequences from that while the other States have had low rates of infection.
I agree that he lifted too soon. But Rupert hounding him now for doing something Rupert was hounding him back then to do is hypocritical. Also the Feds were pushing him hard. They were really winding up the set the economy free rhetoric. Until they stopped.
I am surprised but thankful that Gutwein in Tas did not listen to the Feds.

Victoria lifted restrictions at the same pace as the other states based on federally decided upon protocols by the national cabinet. Victoria’s problem has been the inability to contain community transmission.

Seems clear a lot of people were ignoring Victoria’s restrictions even before they were lifted.

They were quite prepared for an acceptable number of the peasantry to die, if that was the cost of getting back to business and protecting the bonuses and share options.
However, Victorians managed to infect each other at a rate well above that which was deemed appropriate, and it seemed politic to switch to hounding the government for doing the wrong thing, even though you’d sold it as the right thing up to the point where the underclasses let you down.

Tassie said no. And extended the lockdown for a week. And that was enough to continue it.

Very much so. But considering how Victoria has fared in comparison to NSW when the border was open again for months either Victorians were ignoring restrictions at a level far greater than NSW, which seems unlikely, or something else is going on in Victoria. There have been many cases overseas when similar places in the same country have performed much worse for reasons we are not quite able to ascertain at this point in time.

This is true. There does seem to be something out of the ordinary in Victoria. Some factor that doesn’t seem to be in play elsewhere.

Moll has rejected your reality and substituted his own…
So you really think that the covid risk from singing in church is the same as the covid risk from a test tube eating contest in a covid testing facility? Huh?
I have sung in church after covid started. Everybody is facing the same way. Nobody is coughing or sneezing.
The church I was singing at had social distancing in place and I was wearing a mask, but that’s beside the point. It was quite safe without that.
Did you sing the In The Garden Of Eden Baby

https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/covid-19/Pages/sewage-surveillance.aspx
The sewage surveillance research program tests untreated sewage for fragments of the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) virus to provide data to support NSW Health’s response. The virus that causes COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, is just one of many viruses present in sewage. This research program detects viral fragments of SARS-CoV-2, not infectious viruses.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0048969720322816
SARS-CoV-2 RNA was concentrated from wastewater in a catchment in Australia and viral RNA copies were enumerated using reverse transcriptase quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) resulting in two positive detections within a six day period from the same wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The estimated viral RNA copy numbers observed in the wastewater were then used to estimate the number of infected individuals in the catchment via Monte Carlo simulation. Given the uncertainty and variation in the input parameters, the model estimated a median range of 171 to 1,090 infected persons in the catchment, which is in reasonable agreement with clinical observations.
