Is this crossword difficult or am I retarded?

I’m not showing the grid because that’s been more a hindrance than a help. I’ve already had to rub out three answers that failed to match at an intersection and it looks like I need to do it for a fourth.

I was doing crosswords like this one in my early teens. I rarely finished them as my vocabulary / exposure to words was not what it is now, so I never progressed to the cryptic ones. Although I only did crosswords regularly for a couple of years, when I attempt one now my mind shifts into crossword mode, and I do manage to complete them most times as my general knowledge / vocabulary is greater than it was.

If I had not done so many crosswords at a young age, or if I had started doing them later, I don’t think I would enjoy doing them now as that shift would not be easy and it would be a battle.

IMHO, crosswords are a bit like playing an instrument. If you learn how to play piano as a child you’re more likely to just fall back into it as an adult. Learning as an adult, as I did in my mid 30’s, means that there is little hard-wiring there. There are never any shortcuts and sometimes that is no fun.

I think they try to never repeat a word from one crossword to another. And after 52 editions of 200 puzzles each = 200,000 words, they only have obscure words left.
