I’m quite happy to keep them indefinitely, but if people would prefer I can clear them out monthly.

Some things that I’ve thought of/noticed:

  1. Preview button for posting
  2. Fix the post times so they’ve not GMT
  3. Quote button on posts

Fixed. It was just a typo in the style sheet for this forum.

A fixed width text box for entering posts.  It’s pretty narrow in the 5-forum HyperForum.

I knew there was something else.  Can the post number be displayed in the post window?  This would be useful for people wanting to refer people back to information in previous posts.

Someone’s going to have to draw the line and stop pressing Quote though (or trim out some old quotes), otherwise it’s going to get ridiculous.

good for getting rid of that nastyier spam that was appearing on the old forum

thats a slippery slope- not everyone agrees on trollish behaviour; that would require full time mods.
I was thinking more of the obvious spam threads that often had rather offensive bits in the thread titles

maybe the very first post of a new thread could have a report spam button for `those’ threads

Maybe, but I’ll wait until it becomes an issue first.

There’s an admin interface that I can use for deleting posts and can also give other users access to quite easily.

Appointing community members as moderators never seems to work well in my experience…

another forum i frequent got around it by not allowing newly registered members to post new threads until they had ten posts under their belts

just throwing ideas up in the air atm ;-)

my husband runs a phpbb forum and has found an excellent way of filtering out spam-bots – it is part of the registration process and involves identifying certain pictures in a collection and the pictures change each time and various ways so that there is no discernible pattern. Since he has implemented it he hasn’t had any get through. And any pictures can be used.

I didn’t think there was much point in having guest access. People can just register, it’s not very hard (yet). I’ll probably put email address verification on at some point.

And if everyone has to register, there can’t be any impersonating.

I’ll keep that in mind for when we start having problems.

Ooh, there’s a thing, all this talk of registering and not having guest posters…we don’t have little ®’s next to our names any more.

Oh, that quoting is to die for CB88, Thank you so much! It got a little confusing sometimes on the old forum because it didn’t have the name so when you got to the fourth quote or so, you forgot who the quotes were from, or person B would quote person A and you’d think “Wow, I missed that the first time around, well said but no idea who said it!”

On that note, the post id numbers are really helpful if the pages skip when you refresh manually while playing catchup, I often found I’d skip a whole page or just have one or two posts ‘drop off’ without realising until I found things quoted that I’d not read the first time around. Had wondered vaguely why the train of thought had altered so much…:D
After a while I started checking the post id numbers every time I clicked on ‘later posts’
Of course this might not happen now, or it could just be my computer!

Emoticons…there is only one I really miss on the non-emoti forums, but they can be overused and annoying too, and people become so reliant on them that if you don’t have three grins and a wink, they think you’re in a bad mood or being mean!

I always had a lot of trouble about missing posts or whole pages like you HFB. At my age tho you don’t question where the error has come from. You just naturally assume it’s your old brain that’s at fault.

Would be handy to be able to bookmark a link which defaults to View By Time rather than View By Topic – so instead of bookmaking “http://tokyo3.org/forums/gardening/” we could bookmark something like “http://tokyo3.org/forums/gardening/index.asp?view=bytime”

(I’m an ASP coder so I only know how it would be done in ASP – don’t know if it’s possible in this particular case)

I have a suggestion but not sure if it is technically feasible the way the site is set up.

*back to work*

Done. http://tokyo3.org/forums/gardening/?bytime

OOOOOh thanks!! :D

this forum has slowed down to a snails pace in the last 24 hours

The webhost I’m using isn’t so good. I’m paid up until March and I was planning to jump ship then, but if things keep getting slow or go down completely I might move before that.

Hiya, Mr. 88. :o)

I thought it may be a good idea to have a link to the Holiday Forum in the link bar of the Gardening Forum and a link to the Gardening Forum in the link bar of the Holiday Forum.

Cheers, Chris.
